Rio Tinto Group (ASX:RIO) and Shougang Group have commissioned an industrial-scale carbon capture trial facility at Shougang's Jingtang base in China, capable of processing up to 3,000 cubic meters of blast furnace gas per hour and capturing up to 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, according to a Monday statement by the company.
The project builds on their 2022 partnership, focusing on technologies to reduce carbon emissions from steelmaking, including blast furnace optimization, low-carbon sintering, and carbon capture and utilization.
The facility will support long-term research into converting captured carbon dioxide into syngas for steelmaking while using waste heat to reduce capture costs and enable wider deployment, Rio Tinto said.
