Hong Kong Expects Up to 4.5% GDP Growth as AI Drives Exports, Financial Secretary Says

MT Newswires Live09:28

Hong Kong expects to achieve its revised full-year growth forecast of 3.5% to 4.5%, Financial Secretary Paul Chan said in his weekly blog.

Chan said demand for artificial intelligence and related electronic products was driving export growth, with Hong Kong's total merchandise exports rising 53% year-on-year to HK$667.9 billion in August.

He said AI was also creating opportunities for Hong Kong in areas such as data governance, cross-border data transfers, privacy protection, and dispute resolution, leveraging the city's legal and professional services.

Chan also said Hong Kong would need to strengthen AI skills as the technology reshapes jobs and the workforce.

The government's "AI for All" program will offer more than 200 training courses and activities by the first quarter of 2028.
