emerging: It's to move quickly and carry a large checkbook.</p><p>When Gelsinger succeeded Bob Swan as Intel CEO in February, the chip giant was suffering from years of process delays, and a major focus for analysts and investors was whether the company would abandon chip production and focus on design. This approach provides opportunities for competitors Nvidia and<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMD\">AMD</a>Brought huge returns, giving them the ability to eat into Intel's market share.</p><p>Mr. Gelsinger's answer was actually a strong \"no\". Less than two months later, he added another $3.5 billion expansion plan in New Mexico. Intel's CEO has said that more financial commitments are in the works in the United States and abroad.</p><p>Mr. Gelsinger has vowed since joining that Intel's best days are just around the corner. But he also stressed the need for companies to restore their reputation for reliable performance and move quickly to bring back engineering talent to deliver on that promise.</p><p>At times, Mr. Gelsinger has been outspoken about past missteps. Intel has previously tried to become a third-party chipmaker with little success. \"Our initial efforts were somewhat weak,\" he said, adding, \"We didn't really leave ourselves behind.\"</p><p>Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson said the GlobalFoundries acquisition could give Intel the knack for success. \"Because in the past, one of the concerns that everyone had about Intel was that they didn't really know how to act as a foundry,\" he said. \"GlobalFoundries will provide them with a broader and more mature range of capacity.\"</p><p>Earlier Friday, Intel shares were up 1.51%.</p><p>Global chip shortages have rarely pushed previously almost obscure semiconductor production into the spotlight.
