A strong balance sheet helps a lot, and it's even better if management is willing and able to adapt to a changing business environment.These are excellent qualities in the best of times as well. However, flexibility and a solid financial footing will separate the wheat from the chaff when the market turns bearish. These are the companies that will survive the longest and roughest of storms, looking like a winner amid the widespread wreckage on the other side.So if you expect the economy to continue the downtrend of the last six months, you should consider grabbing a few shares of Micron Technology  and Alphabet right now. These businesses come with heaping helpings of the game-changing features mentioned above, and the deal gets even sweeter when the stocks are trading at fire-sale prices.A solid financial platformLet's get the numbers out of the way first.Google parent Alphabet has $20.9 billion of cash equivalents on its balance sheet, paired with just $14.8 billion in long-term debt. But that's not all. In a pinch, Alphabet could also sell off its marketable securities -- stocks, bonds, and other not-quite-cash assets -- valued at $113 billion at the end of March.So Alphabet carries liquid assets worth approximately 8 times as much as its long-term debt. If the cash flow spigot suddenly shuts off, these reserves would carry the company through many years or even decades of dark times.Memory-chip maker Micron should be a different story because it works in a different sector. Alphabet's operations are asset-light and highly profitable, while Micron invests billions of dollars in semiconductor manufacturing equipment every year. It's only fair to expect Micron's balance sheet to tilt heavily in the direction of massive debts and limited cash.But the company plays a different tune. As of March 3, Micron carried $10.1 billion of cash and short-term investments against just $7 billion in long-term debt. Yes, Micron's debt leverage is a little bit less comfortable than Alphabet's, but the company is in excellent financial shape considering the asset-rich sector it's in.Both Micron and Alphabet are also adding to their cash hoards, generating generous free cash flows every year:GOOG and MU Free Cash Flow data by YChartsKeeping an open mindFlexibility is the other half of my formula for long-term success in any type of market.I shouldn't need to remind you that Alphabet is the king of trying new ideas. Google's search and advertising services have made Alphabet one of the most valuable companies in the world, but management has long been planning for the next stage. The potential growth drivers of that stretch include the Waymo self-driving car business, health services from Verily Life Sciences, and high-speed internet connections by Google Fiber.The proliferation of future business ideas not named Google is the reason behind the name change to Alphabet in 2015. By disconnecting the corporate name from the Google brand, Alphabet set itself up to become a cross-sector conglomerate in the long run.In short, Alphabet keeps a stirringly open mind to new business ideas. Whatever comes next, the company will poke and prod at the new environment until it finds a healthy and profitable niche (or five). With the backing of that ultra-solid balance sheet, I see no reason why Alphabet shouldn't thrive through the next downturn and beyond.Micron isn't quite as adventurous as Alphabet, of course. Once again, the company has invested many billions in a global chip-making infrastructure and you can't just flip a switch to run that business in a totally different direction.But Micron has grown up from a smallish chipmaker in a highly fragmented industry to a leading supplier in a new era. There are only a couple of memory-chip companies left on the market after several rounds of pricing pressure, bankruptcies, buyouts, and consolidation. Micron has always emerged from these challenging cycles as a winner, picking up the ashes of its failed rivals in pennies-on-the-dollar bankruptcy auctions.The mature version of the memory industry that you see today has also been good for Micron. The sector as a whole has started to slow down the boom-and-bust cycles of low chip supplies, massive factory investments, and oversupply. Micron's strategy these days is to increase its manufacturing capacity in line with rising demand for memory chips, and no more.So Micron may not be leading the charge into unknown territory the way Alphabet does, but the company has a proven ability to adopt the right strategy for a variety of market conditions. Prices for shelter - where trends tend to be particularly persistent - rose 5.5%, the biggest jump since February 1991.</p><p>Those figures suggest U.S. central bankers may stay locked into half-point increases through their September meeting and even beyond as they try to wrangle inflation lower by slowing the economy.</p><p>Traders of futures tied to the Fed&#39;s policy rate are now betting on half-point rate hikes at least through September, with some chance of an even bigger rate hike before then. Contracts reflect expectations for the policy rate to end the year in the 3%-3.25% range.</p><p>The Fed&#39;s current policy rate target is now 0.75%-1%. The fact is, if investors liked a particular stock a year ago, and that stock is currently down by 50% or more since then, they should probably love it even more right now -- assuming nothing has fundamentally changed within the core business.Three Motley Fool contributors think investors should take full advantage of the current discounts in shares of Nvidia , Airbnb , and Zscaler  by buying them now and holding them for the ultra-long term. Here's why.Image source: Getty Images.At the pinnacle of innovationAnthony Di Pizio Nvidia : The semiconductor industry has never been more important to global manufacturing. Most of the modern-day electronics consumers know and love require advanced processing power to function, and that's made possible by innovations in the chip sector. Nvidia produces some of the most sought-after hardware on the planet, whether it's for gaming, data centers, or artificial intelligence, but the company is broadening its horizons to become more than just a chipmaker.Nvidia's future growth might come from its two smallest segments, which made up just 9% of the company's $8.2 billion in revenue in the fiscal first quarter of 2023 (Nvidia's fiscal year ends Jan. 30). The first is professional visualization, which is home to the company's revolutionary virtual-world-building platform called Omniverse. It's being used for everything from mapping environments for self-driving technology development to creating digital twins of manufacturing and fulfillment centers with millimeter accuracy, which allows companies to carefully configure operations before moving a single piece of physical equipment. The segment's revenue grew 67% year over year in the recent quarter to $622 million.But Nvidia's automotive and robotics unit might be its most exciting. Despite generating a tiny $138 million in revenue in Q1, it has a revenue pipeline that now tops $11 billion, which it expects to realize gradually over the next six years. It stems from blockbuster deals with 35 leading car manufacturers like Mercedes Benz, as well as Tata Motors' Jaguar and Land Rover, to provide autonomous driving hardware and software. Mercedes will be one of the first to roll out the technology, starting with its 2024 model vehicles.In the short term, the gaming and the data center segments will continue to propel Nvidia forward. Revenue from the data center segment alone grew 83% to $3.7 billion in Q1, with revenue from cloud computing customers specifically more than doubling. It far outpaces the company's overall sales growth of 46%.Nvidia stock has fallen 43% since hitting its all-time high of $346 in November last year, and that might be an opportunity to start buying a position with the intention of never selling, given the company's focus on futuristic technologies.A new approach to vacationingJamie Louko Airbnb : With the market's wild volatility, high-quality and low-quality tech stocks alike seem to be dropping. This can be painful for long-term investors, but it also provides opportunities to add more to your highest-conviction investments. Airbnb is one for me because it is continuing to disrupt the way consumers search for vacations.Airbnb thrives on uniqueness and having features that are unrivaled by traditional competitors. The company has one of the most extensive and creative catalogs of listings, with over 6 million active listings, including unique options like mini-islands, treehouses, and cave homes. It also has features that have never been incorporated into traditional processes for booking vacations, like categories and the \"I'm Flexible\" option. These features are unique to Airbnb and allow consumers to decide where to stay based on factors other than location and specific vacation dates.With these unique characteristics, Airbnb has gathered quite the brand reputation. In Q1 2022, the company had over 102 million nights and experiences booked on the platform, which grew 59% year over year. This was the first time the company surpassed 100 million nights booked. The company's Q1 revenue also grew 70% year over year to $1.5 billion. While some of this growth is likely partially due to the pent-up demand for travel, it still signals that the company's competitive advantages are attracting more consumers to the platform.This adoption should continue over both the short and long term. The company is guiding for $2.08 billion in revenue in the second quarter, representing a 56% expansion year over year. Over the long term, the company will have to continue innovating to create a top-tier platform, but Airbnb generated more than $2.8 billion in free cash flow during the trailing 12 months to invest in its platform. This grew over 600% year over year, and with this much reinvestment, Airbnb could strengthen both its competitive advantages and its brand.With shares valued at 28 times free cash flow, Airbnb looks fairly valued today. Continued revenue and nights booked expansion will show that Airbnb's reputation is building, and with its one-of-a-kind platform, I think Airbnb could be a great investment to buy and never sell.The market leader in network securityTrevor Jennewine Zscaler : In the past, organizations protected their data and applications with a castle-and-moat strategy. That means all critical resources were stored on premise, behind a firewall, and all requests were routed through a central hub where security policies were enforced. But the rise of cloud computing and remote work have fundamentally changed the IT world, rendering old-school security measures ineffective.Today, data and applications often live in the cloud and workforces are increasingly mobile, meaning critical resources exist beyond the borders of a corporate firewall. That has created a need for a new kind of network security, and Zscaler is leading the charge. Its zero-trust platform -- known as a secure access service edge (SASE) -- handles the inspection of network traffic, delivering security from the cloud, which eliminates the need for costly on-site appliances. Better yet, Zscaler provides employees with a fast, secure connection to corporate resources and the open internet from any device or location.Also noteworthy, the company operates the largest security cloud in the world, processing over 240 billion requests and blocking millions of threats each day. To that end, Zscaler captures a tremendous amount of data, and that theoretically makes its artificial intelligence-powered security engine uniquely effective. As proof of its best-in-class status, research company Gartner has recognized Zscaler as the industry leader for the last 11 years.That has translated into strong financial results. Revenue soared 61% to $970 million over the past year, due in part to a strong land-and-expand growth strategy -- Zscaler's retention rate has exceeded 125% from the last six quarters, meaning the average customer is spending at least 25% more each year. The company is still unprofitable under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), but free cash flow climbed 45% to $184 million over the past year.Zscaler is set to maintain that momentum. Management puts its market opportunity at $72 billion, and by 2025, Gartner says that \"at least 60% of enterprises will have explicit strategies and timelines for SASE adoption ... up from 10% in 2020.\" As the long-standing industry leader, Zscaler should benefit greatly from that trend. In addition, Musk said the electric car company plans to cut about 10% of its workforce.This news comes at a bleak time for the economy and a difficult few months for Tesla. Regulation in China relating to policies aimed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the region have negatively impacted the automaker's supply chain in 2022, including leading to periods of paused and limited production at the company's important factory in Shanghai.Given all that is going on, should investors be worried about Tesla?Don't forget: Sales are soaringWhile it's possible that Tesla's second quarter may be faring worse than expected, there's still a good chance that things are rosy compared to how many other companies are getting along during these challenging times. For instance, Tesla's Q1 production and deliveries soared 69% and 68%, respectively. Furthermore, management said it expected production to grow 50% or more for the full year despite the challenges it was facing from limited production in China and production constraints from some of its suppliers.In addition, Tesla has been raking in massive amounts of free cash flow. In Q1 2022, free cash flow was $2.2 billion -- up 660% year over year. Net income was $3.3 billion, representing more than a sixfold increase. Financials like this help companies get through difficult times and detours.Given the automaker's recent momentum and management's commentary about its full-year expectations at the time of its Q1 update, any worse-than-expected performance from Tesla will likely be far from a poor or even mediocre business outcome. Indeed, the company will likely grow much faster than all other major automakers in 2022 -- even in a tumultuous economic environment.TESLA FACTORY. The company laid off employees back in 2019 amid its Model 3 production ramp-up. It was able to keep up extraordinary growth rates despite reducing its headcount by about 7%.While it is unfortunate for those employees who are losing their jobs, the reality is that companies can become bloated over time when it comes to headcount. From time to time, therefore, it may make sense for a company to reassess which jobs are the most essential and which ones may not be necessary.Given how well Tesla's last layoffs went, there's a good chance that this one could positively impact the company as well.Tesla will leave production headcount untouchedFinally -- and most importantly -- investors should keep in mind that this is a strategic layoff, leaving some important departments untouched.\"Note, this does not apply to anyone actually building cars, battery packs or installing solar,\" Musk wrote in the purported email to employees.This is critical because Tesla has remained supply constrained. Smart investors use corrections and bear markets to provide extra juice for future returns.Technology stocks have led the decline, as their prior gains led to lofty valuation levels. But there have been meaningful drops in all sectors, and investors can use this market decline to add a diverse mix of holdings with solid businesses, despite recent stock declines.Here are three stocks that have dropped between 25% and 35% this year but offer investors diversity and solid long-term prospects.Strong sales growthA good mix of three such businesses that should continue to have solid future growth are Tesla, Home Depot, and GPS device maker Garmin. When the biggest knock on a stock is its valuation, a bear market offers a chance to reevaluate whether it belongs in your portfolio.Heading into this year, Tesla shares returned more than 1,000% over the prior two and a half years. Home Depot gained about 120% in that time, pushing the valuations of both stocks ahead of the businesses themselves. In some environments, that's OK, and the business results will catch up quickly.But in the current environment, the stocks started to correct as supply chain challenges, the onset of inflation, and rising interest rates raised questions about business results in the near-term future. But in the longer term, sales growth should continue for these companies.Tesla believes rising demand, and its two new manufacturing plants that opened this year in Texas and Germany, will help it achieve 50% annual sales growth for several more years. Garmin has been riding a long-term wave of growing interest in outdoor activities. Sales of its popular GPS-enabled products rose 19% in 2021, capping off six straight years of increasing revenue. And Home Depot has also worked to increase its revenue by 50% over the past five years.HD Revenue (Annual) data by YChartsFalling to the bottom lineMuch of that revenue for all three companies is also reaching the bottom line. Tesla stands out among automakers with an impressive operating margin of 19.2% in the first quarter. When looked at on a trailing 12-month (TTM) basis, the improvement seems even more impressive, and is more than twice what traditional automakers like General Motors and Ford have been able to achieve over the last several years.TSLA Operating Margin (TTM) data by YChartsGarmin's profitability is even more impressive, as it has steadily achieved gross margins approaching 60%, and operating margins have been hovering around 25% over the past two years.Why invest now?Whether to invest in these businesses now still should be determined by what looks to come ahead, not from past performance. But all three look to continue their recent success. Garmin grew revenue 9% in the first quarter, and maintains its estimate for more than a 10% increase for the full year versus 2021. Management also showed its confidence by announcing a newly authorized $300 million share repurchase plan. The share buyback would be the first in four years and complements a reliable dividend that recently yielded 2.6%.Home Depot initiated a multiyear investment program in 2017 that has helped its digital sales soar. But the One Home Depot plan also now focuses on growing its professionals business. Increasing that customer base helped its average sales ticket grow by 11.4% in the first quarter versus the prior-year period. The company expects that improvement to continue.Tesla's astounding sales growth doesn't make the stock cheap by traditional valuation metrics. Even after its recent drop, Tesla shares trade at a sky-high price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 133 based on 2021 earnings. But if sales continue to soar 50% annually as expected, that will continue to move down. That will take some time, however, and is another reason that these are being looked at as investments for the long haul. That valuation may mean limited upside in Tesla shares for a few years.But that's how retirement savings should be invested. The latest quarterly update comes against a backdrop of a contracting Chinese economy, supply chain woes and the recent zero-COVID lockdowns.Taking these factors into consideration, ahead of the print, Baird’s 5-star analyst Colin Sebastian thinks some revisions are in order on the outlook for F23.The analyst now anticipates F1Q23 (June) revenues will increase by 4% year-over-year to reach ¥214.7 billion, below the prior forecast of ¥228.4 billion. This factors in the China commerce and international commerce segments dialing in revenue of ¥144.8 billion and ¥15.9 billion, respectively, vs. the ¥157.4 billion and ¥16.7 billion expected before. Sebastian’s full year forecast now calls for revenue of ¥945.7 billion, below the previous estimate of ¥959.3 billion.The new revised estimates “primarily reflect the deceleration in e-commerce and retail sales reported by China's NBS for April.” “Additionally,” Sebastian explained, “we believe that additional headwinds from recent pandemic-related lock downs in certain cities could impact New Retail and advertising revenues.”There are also respective reductions to the F1Q and FY23 EBITA estimates; these now stand at ¥45 billion (representing a 20% margin) and ¥149.8 billion (15.8% margin vs. the prior 18.6%).Despite the “near-term headwinds,” the company's continued focus on innovation and product development is encouraging and there have been signs the operating climate for Internet companies in China may be “normalizing.”“If that proves accurate,” says the analyst, “we believe there could be material upside in shares over the long term. For now, however, we think management's tone could remain cautious with respect to near-term growth and margins.”Other things to look out for on the earnings call include the recent lockdowns’ effect on the supply chain, the state of the regulatory environment, the progress of Taobao Deals and Taocaicai, growth and margins of the Cloud segment and the company’s capex plans.All in all, Sebastian reiterated an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating on BABA shares along with a $144 price target. Should his thesis play out, a potential upside of ~75% could be in the cards.Overall, the analysts are fully behind Alibaba right now; based on Buys only - 18, in total - the stock boasts a Strong Buy consensus rating.
