mature? GETTY IMAGES

U.S. stocks have clawed back much of their losses from the first half of the year, but the three major indexes tumbled this week under reviving fears about interest rate rises by the Federal Reserve, and there are signs that the bulk of the bear-market rally is already behind us, said Citigroup’s analysts.

According to strategists at Citi Research, the current bear-market rally is almost in line with the length of an average bear-market bounce, and sentiment has already improved as much as it typically does during regular bear-market rallies, which would suggest a possible end to the rally relatively soon.

“Bear market rallies are often sentiment driven, as the market just becomes too bearish,” wrote Citi Research strategists led by Dirk Willer, the managing director and head of emerging market strategy, in a note on Thursday. “More fundamentally, many bear-market rallies are driven by hopes that the Fed comes to the rescue. The current one is no different, as the Fed pivot narrative has been an important catalyst.”

In particular, the chart below shows that the AAII bull-bear indicator, one of the closely-watched investor sentiment surveys, is almost back to levels where bear market rallies peak out, with expectations that stock prices will rise over the next six months, increasing 1.2 percentage points to 33.3% in the week of August 15, while the bearish sentiment increased 0.5 percentage points to 37.2%.

SOURCE: CITI RESEARCH, BLOOMBERG

Meanwhile, the SKEW index for the S&P 500, which measures the difference between the cost of derivatives that protect against market drops and the right to benefit from a rally, normalized almost as much as it does in the median bear market rally (see chart below), said Citi Research. The index can be a proxy for investor sentiment and volatility.

SOURCE: CITI RESEARCH, BLOOMBERG

Federal Reserve officials in July agreed that it was necessary to move their benchmark interest rate high enough to slow the economy to combat high inflation, while raising concerns that they may tighten the stance of monetary policy by more than necessary, according to minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s July 26-27 meeting released Wednesday.

After the release of minutes of the meeting, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard said he is leaning toward another large rate rise of 75 basis points at the central bank’s September meeting. Meanwhile, Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said the Fed “will do what it takes” to drive inflation back toward its 2% target, according to a Bloomberg report, while Reuters reported that Barkin saying the Fed’s efforts needn’t be “calamitous.”

According to Citi Research, the bear-market rally refers to a bounce equal to or larger than 10% that takes place between the peak and the trough. “If a new low is made after a 10% rally, the next rally of more than 10% is a separate bear market rally (or a bull market, if no new lows are made subsequently),” wrote strategists.

The S&P 500 was up 15.4% from its 52-week low of 3666.77 on June 16, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 12.9%, and the NASDAQ Composite jumped 19.4% since their mid-June lows, according to Dow Jones Market Data. GETTY IMAGESU.S. stocks have clawed back much of their losses from the first half of the year, but the three major indexes tumbled this week under reviving fears about interest rate rises by the Federal Reserve, and there are signs that the bulk of the bear-market rally is already behind us, said Citigroup’s analysts.According to strategists at Citi Research, the current bear-market rally is almost in line with the length of an average bear-market bounce, and sentiment has already improved as much as it typically does during regular bear-market rallies, which would suggest a possible end to the rally relatively soon.“Bear market rallies are often sentiment driven, as the market just becomes too bearish,” wrote Citi Research strategists led by Dirk Willer, the managing director and head of emerging market strategy, in a note on Thursday. “More fundamentally, many bear-market rallies are driven by hopes that the Fed comes to the rescue. The current one is no different, as the Fed pivot narrative has been an important catalyst.”In particular, the chart below shows that the AAII bull-bear indicator, one of the closely-watched investor sentiment surveys, is almost back to levels where bear market rallies peak out, with expectations that stock prices will rise over the next six months, increasing 1.2 percentage points to 33.3% in the week of August 15, while the bearish sentiment increased 0.5 percentage points to 37.2%.SOURCE: CITI RESEARCH, BLOOMBERGMeanwhile, the SKEW index for the S&P 500, which measures the difference between the cost of derivatives that protect against market drops and the right to benefit from a rally, normalized almost as much as it does in the median bear market rally (see chart below), said Citi Research. The index can be a proxy for investor sentiment and volatility.SOURCE: CITI RESEARCH, BLOOMBERGFederal Reserve officials in July agreed that it was necessary to move their benchmark interest rate high enough to slow the economy to combat high inflation, while raising concerns that they may tighten the stance of monetary policy by more than necessary, according to minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s July 26-27 meeting released Wednesday.After the release of minutes of the meeting, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard said he is leaning toward another large rate rise of 75 basis points at the central bank’s September meeting. Meanwhile, Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said the Fed “will do what it takes” to drive inflation back toward its 2% target, according to a Bloomberg report, while Reuters reported that Barkin saying the Fed’s efforts needn’t be “calamitous.”According to Citi Research, the bear-market rally refers to a bounce equal to or larger than 10% that takes place between the peak and the trough. “If a new low is made after a 10% rally, the next rally of more than 10% is a separate bear market rally (or a bull market, if no new lows are made subsequently),” wrote strategists.The S&P 500 was up 15.4% from its 52-week low of 3666.77 on June 16, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 12.9%, and the NASDAQ Composite jumped 19.4% since their mid-June lows, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The recent surge in the U.S. dollar to a twenty-year high is also bound to play a negative role. To get ahead of what could cause bears to return with a vengeance, below are three large-cap stocks to sell before it’s too late.And it’s not just the deteriorating fundamentals that are cause for caution. The price action of these industry giants is ugly, even as many stocks are finally showing bottoming patterns. Downtrends have taken root across all time frames, and rallies continue to fail at overhead resistance levels. Until the tone changes, the path of resistance is lower.Let’s take a closer look and map out to capitalize on further pain.Nvidia (NVDA)Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD AmeritradeYou’d be hard-pressed to find an industry chart that looks uglier than semiconductors. Even with the recent rebound in growth stocks, semis haven’t been able to pull out of their downtrend. Nvidia(NASDAQ:NVDA) has set the bearish tone as the largest player in the space. Its trend sunk to a new 52-week low last week at $140.55, and though a four-day rally arrived, it only got as high as its declining 20-day moving average. This area halted the last advance and is a common gathering ground for sellers.Bulls will say that with NVDA stock already down nearly 50%, a recession and other headwinds buffeting the stock are priced in. But you could have speculated the same thing when Nvidia was down 30% and 40%. Yet it went lower. The same risk remains. Until the trend changes, this is a stock to sell into strength.To capitalize on the next descent, consider buying put spreads.The Trade: Buy the Aug $150/$140 bear put spread for $3.75.You’re risking $3.75 to make $6.25 if NVDA sits below $140 at expiration.Adobe (ADBE)Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD AmeritradeAdobe(NASDAQ:ADBE) shares have been laid low this year, and despite a respectable bounce off the lows, prices are struggling with stiff resistance at $400. In midday trading Tuesday, ADBE is forming a nasty reversal candle that signals the beginning of its next down-leg.The declining 50-day moving average allows for tight stop placement, and if prices retest last month’s lows ($338), then there’s a lot of potential reward for new short trades. We’ve seen nothing but underwhelming numbers and down gaps over the past three reports on the earnings front. The consistent disappointment backs up the bear case.Throw it all together, and Adobe is one of the more obvious large-cap stocks to sell now. Here’s an option spread to profit from its pain.The Trade: Buy the Aug $360/$340 put spread for $5.You’re risking $5 to make $15 if prices sink below $340 by expiration.Deere (DE)Source: The thinkorswim® platform from TD AmeritradeDeere(NYSE:DE) rounds out today’s large-cap stocks to sell with a freshly completed topping pattern that was one year in the making. The length of the top and significance of the $320 broken support zone mean future rallies will be highly suspect. At the same time, DE stock rallied so far during the recovery that it created very few support levels.Many stocks have roundtripped the post-pandemic recovery, returning to the breakout areas from late 2020. But Deere isn’t even close. That leaves ample room for prices to unwind if participants feel a similar reset is warranted. The May earnings report sent prices plunging, and we’ve seen weak action every since. Investors in the stock are hoping for some relief on Wednesday when the company releases its fiscal 2023 first-quarter results (for the three months that ended on April 30).A situation involving a near-term risk in the graphics processing unit (GPU) market seems to have spooked investors going into Nvidia's upcoming quarterly report. So, should Nvidia investors jump ship before the company releases its results to avoid further potential losses? Or should savvy investors looking for a long-term growth play take advantage of Nvidia's slip and buy the stock given its relatively attractive valuation?Image source: Getty Images.Reasons to sell Nvidia stockConsumer electronics company Asus recently pointed out that the demand for graphics cards used by cryptocurrency miners is cooling down. Though the company believes that the demand for gaming GPUs continues to remain strong, Nvidia investors should be a worried lot as the chip giant has been hurt badly in the past thanks to weak cryptocurrency GPU demand.Jon Peddie Research estimates miners accounted for a quarter of GPU sales in the first half of 2021. Additionally, it won't be surprising to see preowned graphics cards used by cryptocurrency miners flood the market. Such a scenario means a nice chunk of GPU sales could disappear and shrink Nvidia's addressable market. Throw in the fact that sales of personal computers are slowing down, and it is easy to see why Nvidia is heading into its quarterly report in a challenging environment.Market research company IDC estimates sales of PCs were down 5.1% in the first quarter of 2022 following two years of solid growth. Declining PC sales would further restrict sales of graphics cards as Nvidia will have a smaller pool of customers to whom it could sell its GPUs. All of this indicates that Nvidia's video gaming business may be headed for a near-term slowdown.The company generated $12.5 billion in revenue from its gaming business in fiscal 2022, up 61% from the prior year. So, any weakness on this front could derail the company's impressive growth momentum and cause the stock to lose more ground considering its rich valuation.Nvidia stock is trading at 44 times trailing earnings, which is expensive when compared to the Nasdaq-100's earnings multiple of 26. As such, Nvidia needs to deliver a solid set of results and back it up with eye-popping guidance if it wants to turn its fortunes around on the stock market.Reasons to buy before earningsNvidia stock is expensive when compared to the index, but investors shouldn't forget that it was trading at 90 times earnings last year. What's more, Nvidia's price-to-earnings ratio is lower than its five-year average multiple of 58. So, savvy investors are getting a relatively good deal on Nvidia stock right now.They may consider grabbing this opportunity as, despite the headwinds in the gaming GPU market, Nvidia's guidance indicates that it could deliver another quarter of robust growth. The company expects to deliver $8.1 billion in fiscal Q1 revenue along with an adjusted gross margin of 67%.Nvidia had delivered $5.66 billion in revenue in the year-ago period along with an adjusted gross margin of 66.2%. So, Nvidia's revenue is expected to rise 43% year over year. Analysts expect that robust increase to translate into a year-over-year earnings increase of nearly 42% to $1.29 per share.It won't be surprising to see Nvidia back up such impressive growth with healthy guidance thanks to its fast-growing data center business, which complements the growth of the gaming segment. The data center segment was Nvidia's second-largest business in fiscal 2022 as it produced 39% of its total revenue. The company's data center revenue increased 58% last fiscal year to a record $10.6 billion. Investors can expect another solid year from the data center business thanks to the growing demand for server GPUs, which is a market Nvidia dominates.Meanwhile, the automotive business could give Nvidia another shot in the arm. The company sees a $300 billion addressable revenue opportunity in the automotive market, and the good part is that it has already started taking advantage of it. Throw in other emerging opportunities such as the metaverse, and it is easy to see that Nvidia is well placed to overcome any potential weaknesses in one part of its business thanks to the multiple opportunities it is sitting on.As such, investors looking to buy a semiconductor stock for the long run may think of buying Nvidia stock irrespective of any near-term headwinds. The stock is trading at a relatively attractive valuation now and its long-term growth story remains intact.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1688,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9018454002,"gmtCreate":1649082458237,"gmtModify":1676534447169,"author":{"id":"3575024004895861","authorId":"3575024004895861","name":"Yannick","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b8bcd137597d0a92ada6ef564b84dd48","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575024004895861","idStr":"3575024004895861"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Iike my comment","listText":"Iike my comment","text":"Iike my comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9018454002","repostId":"1139545984","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1139545984","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1649062770,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1139545984?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-04 16:59","market":"us","language":"en","title":"5 Sizzling 'Strong Buy' Stocks Under $10 With Massive Upside Potential","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1139545984","media":"24/7 wall street","summary":"While most of Wall Street focuses on large-cap and mega-cap stocks, as they provide a degree of safe","content":"

While most of Wall Street focuses on large-cap and mega-cap stocks, as they provide a degree of safety and liquidity, many investors are limited in the number of shares they can buy. That can really help the decision-making process, especially when you are on to a winner, as you can always sell half and keep half.We screened our 24/7 Wall St. research database looking for smaller cap companies that could very well offer patient investors some huge returns for the rest of 2022 and beyond. Skeptics of low-priced shares should remember that at one point both Amazon and Apple traded in the single digits. One stock we featured over the years, Zynga, recently was purchased by Take-Two Interactive.While all five stocks are rated Buy, it is important to remember that no single analyst report should be used as a sole basis for any buying or selling decision.Gambling.comWith sports betting exploding, this stock is a solid play that has been cut in half since late last year. With the broader tech sell-off and renowned short-seller Jim Chanos taking aim at the company, the perfect storm could be in the works as the stock looks to bottom out and regain its footing.Coinbase stock shed around 58% of its value from peak to trough and is now attempting to move on from its brief plunge just north of $150 per share. Now, it’s never a good idea to be on the receiving end of a short-seller, especially one as famed as Jim Chanos.Although the shorts may be inclined to talk up their book after there’s already a considerable amount of negative momentum behind it, there are potential pitfalls of catching the falling knife that is Coinbase. I am bearish.Jim Chanos Refers to Coinbase as a ‘Bubble Stock‘A few weeks ago, Chanos referred to Coinbase as a “bubble stock.” Indeed, Chanos’ track record speaks for itself. Although Chanos’ alarming statements shouldn’t be taken as gospel, they should cause one to re-evaluate their theses to ensure that the narrative still holds.In prior pieces, I outlined the high risks involved with a name like Coinbase. Although the firm stood out as one of the more intriguing publicly traded ways to play a bet on the crypto markets, the price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple is so depressed for a reason.At 13 times trailing earnings, COIN stock seems like more of a bargain to take advantage of amid the tech-driven sell-off. With a trading frenzy in the rear-view mirror, though, it will be tough to stack up against past quarters now that the risk appetite has plunged.Chanos thinks Coinbase is “overearning” and that increased competition will weigh on the platform’s above-average margins. Just how much fee compression could be in the cards at the hands of rivals? Chanos thinks enough such that the firm “will probably not be profitable this year,”Indeed, I remarked on Coinbase’s loftier fees relative to competitors in past pieces but thought they were somewhat justified, given Coinbase was a more established and trusted presence in the crypto exchange scene.Competition Coming?Relative to the current slate of rivals, I’d argue Coinbase can still justify its loftier fees.That said, Coinbase’s days of being able to command higher fees may be numbered if a trusted behemoth like PayPal (PYPL) were to make a deeper dive into the crypto waters. Given PayPal’s recent embrace of cryptocurrencies, a case could be made that the crypto brokerages could be headed for the same “race to zero” faced by stock brokerages many years ago.In any case, I agree with Chanos in that Coinbase’s road ahead doesn’t look half as bright as the road behind it.Cyclical Nature of BitcoinInterest in cryptocurrencies still seems high, given numerous issues at the macro level. The server-breaking popularity of Coinbase’s Super Bowl advertisement was nothing short of remarkable. With Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies warming up in the latter half of the first quarter, Coinbase stock may have the stage set for a larger relief rally.However, it is important to note that sentiment in the crypto space can change at the drop of a hat. For that reason, it’s tough to value a company like Coinbase, given how heavily its stock can be influenced by external factors that move the broader basket of cryptocurrencies.Bitcoin’s boom and bust nature is nothing new. The next bust is inevitable, and it could be just as violent as past downturns that saw crypto exchange commercials vanish for many months at a time. If the broader crypto markets were to go bust, it would be nearly impossible for Coinbase to avoid a plunge of similar magnitude.Wall Street’s TakeAccording to TipRanks’ analyst rating consensus, COIN stock comes in as a Moderate Buy. Out of 17 analyst ratings, there are 13 Buy recommendations, two Hold recommendations, and two Sell recommendations.The average Coinbase price target is $304.94, implying 62.7% upside potential. Analyst price targets range from a low of $135 per share to a high of $500 per share.Bottom Line on Coinbase StockCoinbase is coming off an incredible year, and Chanos may be right in that the company is “overearning.” Indeed, the low P/E multiple may already reflect such. Though Coinbase may face an uphill battle this year, it remains impossible to gauge how the crypto markets will fare this year, given the crisis unfolding in Ukraine.Further, I wouldn’t discount Coinbase’s ability to resist the fee pressure as rivals loom.Arguably, it already has. My biggest concern is what happens once big-tech fintech rivals with big crypto ambitions begin to move in.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"COIN":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2204,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"posts","isTTM":true}
