Both stocks are down around 4% this year and are largely flat over the past 52 weeks.</p>\n<p>PayPal, on the other hand, got a lift as the pandemic sent shoppers online and fueled a surge in digital payments. The company is also developing new revenue streams, aiming to become a digital payments “super app,” expanding into everything from Bitcoin to in-store QR-codes, international money transfers, and new peer-to-peer (P2P) services.</p>\n<p>PayPal outlined its five-year strategy in a presentation to investors last week. And some analysts were clearly impressed. Lisa Ellis of MoffettNathanson raised her price target on the stock to $350, reflecting a variety of sources of growth.</p>\n<p>Just about every facet of the business may bepoisedto double over the next five years. PayPal expects to have 750 million active accounts by 2025, up from 377 million now. It sees total payments volume expanding at a 25% annualized rate, reaching $2.8 trillion by 2025.&nbsp; Revenues are expected to hit more than $50 billion, up from an estimated $25.6 billion this year.</p>\n<p>PayPal also expects to boost adjusted operating margins from 25% to 28%, and sees earnings per share rising an average 22% a year. It’s planning to generate $40 billion in free cash flow over the next five years, targeting 30% to 40% for share repurchases.</p>\n<p>As Ellis points out, PayPal has several stepping stones to hit those targets. One is a new service called Buy Now Pay Later, an interest-free installment plan for consumer purchases. The service is gaining traction, with $750 million of transaction volume in the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>Anothergrowth driveris cryptocurrencies. PayPal users can now buy and store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on its app. The company aims to allow crypto to be used as a funding source with the 28 million merchants on its platform, acting as a middleman between consumers and businesses. Bitcoinhit a record$50,000 on Tuesday, up 75% this year, and it appears to be driving greater usage of PayPal, which could ultimately lead to higher average revenue per customer.</p>\n<p>PayPal also aims to use its Venmo P2P service as a platform for consumer-to-business payments. And PayPal is making inroads with brick-and-mortar merchants through QR technology for contactless payments in stores.</p>\n<p>Does all of this warrant a higher market value and a steep premium to Mastercard stock? The card network is actually expected to lift revenue and profits at a faster pace in fiscal 2021, according to Ellis, growing revenue 21.7% versus 19% for PayPal. She also sees Mastercard’s earnings per share rising 33.3% versus 17.5% for PayPal’s.</p>\n<p>But the five-year outlook is clearly more favorable for PayPal, with revenue rising 21% a year, compared with 15% for Mastercard, and earnings compounding at a 22% rate, versus 17% for Mastercard.</p>\n<p>The question is whether PayPal’s valuation is getting too rich. At 67 times estimated 2021 per-share earnings, PayPal stock is trading nearly three times more expensive than the S&amp;P 500’s P/E ratio of 23 times earnings. Mastercard goes for 42 times 2021 earnings.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Wall Street can’t seem to catch up with PayPal’s fast-rising stock. The companies expect to close the transaction in the second quarter, when Hyzon will take over the SPAC’s Nasdaq listing under a to-be-determined ticker symbol.</p><p>As written, the deal values Hyzon at roughly $2.7 billion including proceeds. But rumors of the coming agreementleaked last week, sending Decarbonization stock higher than the $10 per share that valuation is based on. Shares closed at $17.76 Monday, implying about $4.8 billion for the merged entity.</p><p>It’s an attractive early valuation for a new hydrogen-technology stock.Nikola(NKLA), which became publicly traded via a SPAC merger in 2020, is currently valued at about $9 billion. Fuel cell technology companyPlug Power(PLUG) has a market capitalization of about $32 billion.</p><p>Hyzon’s business model is closer to Plug’s than Nikola’s.Nikola plansto manufacture and assemble Nikola-branded hydrogen fuel-cell powered trucks, plus it also wants to build and operate hydrogen filling stations for its customers. Plug focuses more on hydrogen fuel-cell technology and integrating its technology into multiple transportation applications.</p><p>Like Plug, Hyzon isn’t interested in building its own trucks from the ground up. The company has developed what it believes is leading hydrogen fuel-cell technology for heavy duty transportation applications. It wants to supply that powertrain to truck-makers and fleet owners to put in whatever truck or bus body they want. Hyzon wants to be like theCummins(CMI) of hydrogen.</p><p>“The core value proposition in the vehicle is actually all about the fuel cell,” Hyzon’s CEO and co-founder Craig Knight tells<i>Barron’s</i>. “Historically a diesel truck has been defined by the quality and performance of its engine, and we don’t think that changes as we [move to hydrogen-powered trucks.]”</p><p>Hyzon’s fuel cell tech comes from its parent company, Asia-basedHorizon, which has been developing fuel cells for stationary and mobile power applications for two decades. Horizon will still own about 50% of the outstanding shares of Hyzon when the merger is complete.</p><p>Commercial hydrogen and electrification stocks are on fire. Several tracked by<i>Barron’s</i>, includingWorkhorse(WKHS) andBallard Power Systems(BLDP) are up about 68% year to date on average after rising roughly 440% in 2020. Both returns crush comparable numbers for the&nbsp;S&amp;P 500.</p><p>Alternative powertrain technology in the commercial vehicle space might happen faster than in personal transportation market. Commercial vehicles are driven more, on average, each day, so fuel savings pile up faster. What’s more, electrified vehicles have fewer parts to fix, so maintenance costs tend to be lower compared with diesel and gasoline powered options.</p><p>“We expect unavoidable and rapid development of the hydrogen economy globally over the next 10 years,” says Robert Tichio, a Decarbonization SPAC director and partner at private-equity firmRiverstone Holdings.“It is our view that hydrogen is a very important part of the decarbonization solution especially for certain categories of transportation and mobility, and will absolutely coexist with battery electric vehicles.”</p><p>Riverstone is the sponsor of another SPAC—Decarbonization Plus Acquisition Corporation II(DCRNU)—which just went public last week, raising $350 million.</p><p>Decarbonization Plus I listed last fall, raising about $226 million.
