Household staples are becoming more and more expensive, crowding out spending on discretionary categories and delaying the spending reallocation back to services. And while gas prices explain much of the story, food and housing prices were also key drivers in February,” said John Leer, Morning Consult’s Chief Economist.</p><p>“Unfortunately the war in Ukraine will make it more difficult to get inflation under control. Gas and energy prices continue to rise, wheat prices are through the roof and supply chains remain in chaos,” Leer added.</p><p>The European Central Bank on Thursday opted to keep interest rates unchanged, remaining cautious about the potential economic fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. BofA is Berkshire Hathaway's second-largest holding by market value ($42.3 billion, as of last weekend).Though bank stocks were virtually unstoppable in 2021, they've cooled considerably in recent weeks. The economic uncertainties tied to the Russia-Ukraine war, coupled with the prospect of rapidly rising inflation threatening domestic growth, have investors on edge.The important thing to remember with bank stocks is that they're highly cyclical and often prepared for downturns in the U.S. and global economy. Even Buffett is fully aware that recessions are an inevitable part of the economic cycle. But the Oracle of Omaha also knows that periods of expansion last considerably longer than recessions. This allows bank stocks like BofA to spend a disproportionately longer amount of time reaping the rewards of an expanding economy.Another intriguing aspect of Bank of America is its interest rate sensitivity. Among money-center banks, none would see their net interest income vacillate more from interest rate yield curve movements than BofA. With U.S. inflation hitting a 40-year high in January, and the Federal Reserve signaling that it'll begin raising interest rates, Bank of America appears set for a windfall of added interest income on its outstanding variable-rate loans.According to the company's fourth-quarter operating results, a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would add an estimated $6.5 billion in net interest income. At the moment, at least four 25-basis-point hikes are expected by Wall Street over the next 12 months (100 basis points).Bank of America also deserves credit for its digitization efforts. Let's face it, when you think of digital banking, BofA probably isn't the first company to come to mind. Yet, the company ended 2021 with 41 million monthly active digital banking customers and saw 49% of all sales completed digitally in the fourth quarter. While inflation is one of the concerns weighing on shares of the company, the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage may be the bigger issue. Rival Ford Motor Company announced in February that production at eight of its assembly plants would be temporarily halted due to the semiconductor shortage. Since this is an industrywide problem, GM is unlikely to be immune.However, focusing too much on short-term supply issues would be regrettable, because you'd miss out on GM's massive long-term catalyst: The electrification of consumer vehicles and enterprise fleets.General Motors is investing heavily in an electrified future. Last year, the company upped its commitment to spend $35 billion through 2025 on electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous vehicles, and battery research/facilities. This hefty investment will result in two exclusive battery facilities coming online by 2023 and the company rolling out 30 EVs globally by mid-decade. Per CEO Mary Barra, the company should have the capacity to produce more than 1 million EVs annually in North America by the end of 2025, with around 600,000 units being EV trucks produced at its Orion Township, Michigan plant.This focus on truck production is smart and strategic. Trucks produce the best margins, relative to sedans. Furthermore, with prices at the pump soaring, truck owners are liable to feel the sting more than people driving sedans, and may be more willing to make the switch to electric. It's also worth pointing out that GM secured more than 110,000 initial deposits of $100 to reserve the newly unveiled Chevy Silverado EV.General Motors has ample opportunity to secure significant market share in China as well. In each of the past two years, GM has delivered 2.9 million vehicles (mostly combustion-engine vehicles) in China, the world's No. 1 auto market.Even if GM's 2022 profit forecast were to come down modestly to account for chip shortages (say 10% to 15%), shares can be scooped up for about seven times expected earnings in 2022. Specifically, Mastercard generated about 4% of its net revenue from Russia and approximately 2% from Ukraine in 2021, according to recent filings. With Mastercard blocking certain Russian financial institutions from accessing its payment network, and there being no clarity as to when this conflict will be resolved, investors have taken a \"sell now, ask questions later\" approach.While uncertainty is never Wall Street's friend, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Mastercard's future, even if these uncertainties persist.Like Bank of America and other financial stocks, Mastercard is a cyclical company. It does well when the global economy is expanding and people/businesses are spending, and it struggles a bit when recessions hit and spending declines. If anything, it's a very predictable operating model. Since economic expansions are measured in years, as opposed to a couple of months or quarters with recessions, long-term investors can play a numbers game that works very much in their favor.Mastercard also makes for a smart buy due to its lending avoidance. This is a company that purely sticks to payment processing. You might be scratching your head and wondering why a brand-name business that enjoys long periods of economic expansion wouldn't lend money to generate interest income and fees. The simple answer is that Mastercard's management team understands the inevitability of recessions and economic contractions. Since it doesn't lend, it doesn't have to set aside capital if and when loan losses arise. This allows it to rebound faster than most financial stocks.If you need one more reason to buy Mastercard stock, consider this: Even if approximately 4% to 6% of its net revenue is at risk, sales for the company are forecast to grow 19% this year and 17% next year. As a result, FCEL stock is down nearly 13% on Wednesday, but other fuel cell stocks are getting hit too.FuelCell Energy opened lower by 12.6% and fell as much as 17.7% at one point in the session.Plug Power(NASDAQ:PLUG) fell 1.31% on Wednesday, although bulls have erased most of the stock’s losses for the session.Bloom Energy(NYSE:BE) is in a similar state, down 1.35% on the day after falling as much as 4.5%.While FuelCell Energy’s quarterly report isn’t directly correlated to Plug Power or Bloom Energy’s business, the sentiment surrounding the space took a bit of a hit this morning.FuelCell Earnings DisappointFuelCell reported atop- and bottom-line miss this morning, which is never a good look. The company lost 7 cents a share, 3 cents a share more than expectations. Worse, revenue fell 18% year over year to $13.94 million, missing expectations by more than $7.5 million.The near-20% year-over-year decline is bad enough. However, reporting just under $14 million in sales when analysts were expecting an increase to more than $21.55 million is a big disappointment.The company’s $1.29 billion backlog as of Oct. 30, 2021 has barely changed from a year ago. Further, full-year revenue represented a slight year-over-year decline, while net losses grew about 13.3% against the prior year.On the plus side,there was this:“We believe our opportunities for commercial success have increased with the resolution of our legal proceedings with POSCO Energy, which includes a commitment to order 20 fuel cell modules from us to service POSCO Energy’s existing installed base of carbonate fuel cell platforms.… As we move into fiscal year 2022, we are invigorated by our emphasis on growth, scale, innovation and execution. The initial work under our Powerhouse Business Strategy built the foundation over the past couple of years, and the addressable opportunities globally given our repositioned company have never been greater for FuelCell Energy.”Fuel Cell Stocks Have Been StrugglingIt has not been a good week for FuelCell stock, which is down nearly 30% from Monday’s high. However, it’s been a tough stretch for fuel cell stocks in general.Of the stocks mentioned in this group, all three are lower over the past year. Just from their respective three-month highs, these three stocks are down anywhere from 35% to 50%. If we zoom out to the entire year, these fuel cell stocks have done even worse.Bloom Energy stock is down about 50% from its 2021 high, while Plug Power is off by 61%. The Nasdaq managed to outpace both the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>(SNPINDEX:^GSPC)and the<b>Dow Jones Industrial Average</b>(DJINDICES:^DJI), but all three finished higher, and the Dow set a new intraday record high before falling back from its best levels of the session.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8c4f90c680b37bfb6ab2d8ce9d154a1b\" tg-width=\"803\" tg-height=\"249\">One of the investors who's gotten hit hardest by the fallingNasdaqis Cathie Wood, the founder and chief investment officer of popular fund company ARK Invest. Wood's stock picks had been red-hot until the recent market correction. Today, though, her three favorite stocks were back in favor and saw huge gains.</p>\n<p><b>Squaring up</b></p>\n<p><b>Square</b>(NYSE:SQ)is Wood's largest holding in her<b>ARK Fintech Innovation ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:ARKF). Square had been down more than 25% from its recent highs just last month, but the stock picked up ground with an 12% rise on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>The case for Square's core electronic payments network is sound and easy to understand. The company has worked hard to bring key financial services to businesses of all sizes. Wood also likes how Square has embraced cryptocurrencies rather than shying away from their potential application as disruptors to traditional payment systems.</p>\n<p>Strategic moves likeSquare's recent purchase of Tidal, however, take a little more explanation. Square CEO Jack Dorsey believes there's growth potential in creating an ecosystem that resonates with the artist community. It's unclear how that'll play out, but it shows the company's willingness to take risks in surprising directions.</p>\n<p><b>Looking healthier</b></p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the<b>ARK Genomic Revolution ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:ARKG), you'll find<b>Teladoc Health</b>(NYSE:TDOC)as the biggest holding. Teladoc had taken an even bigger hit, falling about 40% from its highs last month. But Tuesday brought relief in the form of a 9% gain to make back some of those losses.</p>\n<p>Investors have been increasingly wary about stocks that benefited from the stay-at-home mandates of the COVID-19 pandemic. Teladoc went from being a convenience to a necessity during the pandemic, and patients got their first look at what remote medicine might actually look like. Some fear that when the coronavirus crisis is under control, people will simply go back to the old way of doing things andhurt Teladoc's growth.</p>\n<p>That's certainly possible, but the counterargument is that having seen how good remote health services can be, patients might choose to keep using them even when they don't absolutely have to. That makes a share price that's well off its highs look much more attractive, offering a margin of safety for the bull case for Teladoc.</p>\n<p><b>Revving its engines</b></p>\n<p>Finally,&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:TSLA)&nbsp;is by far Wood's favorite stock, as it's the top holding in three different ARK Invest funds.<b>ARK Next Generation Internet ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:ARKW),<b>ARK Autonomous Technology &amp; Robotics ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:ARKQ), and the landmark<b>ARK Innovation ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:ARKK)all have Tesla prominently featured, with as much as 10% of fund assets in the electric automaker's stock. Tesla shares had been down roughly 35% at their worst levels, but a nearly 20% rise on Tuesday added a full $110 back to the stock price.</p>\n<p>One source of optimism about Teslacame from Wall Street analysts. Wedbush issued a new price target of $950 per share, which represented a nearly 70% rise from Monday's closing price of $563. Analyst company New Street upgraded the stock to buy from neutral, setting a $900 price target. Both see good things for the automaker in the next few years, including higher deliveries and opportunities in big markets like China.</p>\n<p>Tesla promises to remain volatile for the foreseeable future. Yet Wood sees Tesla at the forefront of key technological advances in autonomous driving and energy storage, and that could keep interest in the automaker's stock high for a long time.</p>\n<p><b>Getting back on track</b></p>\n<p>Obviously, one day doesn't say anything about the long-term direction of any investment, and today's gains didn't claw back all the losses that these three stocks have suffered in recent weeks. The Class B stock is in the S&amp;P 500 index.</p><p>In recent weeks, however, trading in the Class A shares has been elevated at an average of more than 2,000 shares a day—and 2,500 a day in past five sessions—against an average of fewer than 500 shares daily in 2020. The difference translates into about $800 million of additional daily trades in the Class A stock. Trading activity in the Class B shares, meanwhile, has not been elevated—an average of about five million shares a day in the past month, against six million in the last 12 months.</p><p>Berkshire shares have bested the S&amp;P 500 this year with the Class A stock up 9.7% through Friday, against a 2.5% rise in the index after trailing the index by a total of over 40 percentage points in 2019 and 2020. Buffett gave way $2.9 billion to the various foundations last year. The Class A is the original Berkshire stock, while the Class B was created in 1996.</p><p>Buffett holds 248,734 Class A shares, a 16% economic interest in the company, but roughly 30% of the vote. Buffett owns 39% of the Class A stock. Around 40% of Berkshire’s stock is held in the Class A shares, with the rest in the Class B. Berkshire’s market value is around $580 billion.</p><p>It is notable that when Buffett gives away stock annually, he converts his Class A stock to Class B stock. The Class B stock is more liquid than the A, simplifying subsequent sales by the Gates foundation and others. But in converting the A shares, Buffett ensures that other investors won’t get their hands on the supervoting shares.</p><p>That could be important in the post-Buffett era, because it means whoever is overseeing his estate should have a sizable voting interest in Berkshire. Buffett has said that his Berkshire stake would be given away in the 12 years after his death.</p><p>Berkshire could face pressure from activists after Buffett’s death to break up the company, something that the CEO opposes. Buffett has said that he doubts any breakup will occur because sufficient stock is likely to be in friendly hands after his death.</p><p>The Class A stock can be converted into 1,500 shares of the Class B stock, but not the other way around. As a result, the Class A stock can trade at a premium to the Class B. With the recent buying activity in the A stock, it ended Friday at a roughly 0.5% premium to the B shares, against virtual parity at year-end 2020.</p><p>There are few sizable holders of the Class A stock besides Buffett. Fidelity parent FMR is the only other owner of more than 5%.
