Shares rallied 4.6% in the premarket.\nPfizer(PFE) – Pfizer beat estimates by 10 cents with adjusted quarterly earnings of 97 cents per share, and revenue above estimates as well. Asia-Pacific shares were closing down around 0.7% , while Wall Street futures pointed to a modest 0.4% drop.</p>\n<p>The Fed forecasts showed 13 of the 18 person policy board saw rates rising in 2023 versus only six previously, while seven tipped a first move in 2022.</p>\n<p>\"The new Fed 'dot plot' indicating that the median FOMC member now forecasts two Fed rate hikes in 2023, versus none in the March iteration, represented the hawkish surprise out of the June Fed meeting,\" said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at NAB.</p>\n<p>While these 'dot plots' are not commitments and have a poor track record of predicting rates, the sudden shift was a shock.</p>\n<p>The Fed also signalled it would now be considering whether to 'taper' its $120 billion-a-month asset purchase programme meeting by meeting and downgraded the risk from the pandemic given progress with vaccinations.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan analysts noted Fed Chair Jerome Powell had not been as aggressive in his media conference. He had described it as a \"talking about talking about meeting,\" a glib reference to his protestations earlier this year that the Fed was not even \"talking about talking about\" tighter policy.</p>\n<p>\"It appears that faster progress toward reopening and higher inflation surprises revealed some hawks on the FOMC, but we suspect that leadership is predominantly anchored at zero or <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike in 2023,\" JPMorgan said, sticking with a prediction for tapering to start early next year.</p>\n<p>Markets moved quickly to price in the risk of earlier action and Fed fund futures shifted to imply a first hike by the end of 2022. Yields on 10-year bonds shot up almost nine basis points to 1.57%.</p>\n<p>ALL RISE</p>\n<p>The dollar also broke out of recent tight ranges. It had risen 0.9% on Wednesday against a basket of currencies to 91.387</p>\n<p>for its biggest gain since March last year and set a two-month high in early European trading.</p>\n<p>Powell's hawkish turn prompted both Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank to abandon their calls that the U.S. currency would weaken against the euro, although others were not so sure.</p>\n<p>Agnès Belaisch, Chief European Strategist of the Barings Investment Institute, said the fact that the Fed was not going to lift rates any time soon was good for world growth and that FX markets would therefore get over Wednesday's shift.</p>\n<p>\"He (Powell) said they wouldn't do anything for the next two years, so it's a shock but wrapped in good news,\" Belaisch said.</p>\n<p>\"I think he gave the markets the all-clear to rally\".</p>\n<p>The euro slipped back towards $1.1950 in the European session and the dollar was just shy of its 2021 high against the yen, last buying 110.55 yen .</p>\n<p>The kiwi dollar clawed back about half of its overnight losses after first-quarter growth figures blew past forecasts, and while the Aussie dollar and British pound stabilised emerging market currencies weakened.</p>\n<p>Ahead for currency markets is an interest rate decision from Turkey's central bank due at 1100 GMT, which has the lira on edge . Asia-Pacific shares were closing down around 0.7% , while Wall Street futures pointed to a modest 0.4% drop.</p>\n<p>The Fed forecasts showed 13 of the 18 person policy board saw rates rising in 2023 versus only six previously, while seven tipped a first move in 2022.</p>\n<p>\"The new Fed 'dot plot' indicating that the median FOMC member now forecasts two Fed rate hikes in 2023, versus none in the March iteration, represented the hawkish surprise out of the June Fed meeting,\" said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at NAB.</p>\n<p>While these 'dot plots' are not commitments and have a poor track record of predicting rates, the sudden shift was a shock.</p>\n<p>The Fed also signalled it would now be considering whether to 'taper' its $120 billion-a-month asset purchase programme meeting by meeting and downgraded the risk from the pandemic given progress with vaccinations.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan analysts noted Fed Chair Jerome Powell had not been as aggressive in his media conference. He had described it as a \"talking about talking about meeting,\" a glib reference to his protestations earlier this year that the Fed was not even \"talking about talking about\" tighter policy.</p>\n<p>\"It appears that faster progress toward reopening and higher inflation surprises revealed some hawks on the FOMC, but we suspect that leadership is predominantly anchored at zero or <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike in 2023,\" JPMorgan said, sticking with a prediction for tapering to start early next year.</p>\n<p>Markets moved quickly to price in the risk of earlier action and Fed fund futures shifted to imply a first hike by the end of 2022. (NOKIA.HE) and GameStop Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GME\">$(GME)$</a>.)</p>\n<p><b>Short squeezes and meme stocks</b></p>\n<p>Traders looking to group together on social media to make quick killings by pushing up share prices of companies at early stages or those going through difficult times have been setting up short squeezes.</p>\n<p>Professional investors have traditionally short-sold shares of companies they believe will perform worse than most other investors or analysts expect. Shorting means borrowing a company's shares and selling them immediately, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price, returning them to the lender and pocketing the difference. If you simply buy a stock hoping it will go up, all you risk is the money you invest. You might get wiped out. But if you short a stock, your risk potential is unlimited. You never know how high the price might rise if you have gotten the trade wrong.</p>\n<p>\"Covering\" a short position is when you buy back the shares to return them to the investor who lent them to you. You are hoping to cover at a lower price than you sold the shares for, to make a profit.</p>\n<p>To have a short position, you need to have a margin account with a broker -- an account that lets you borrow to invest or trade. Because of the risk in taking a short position, if the share price goes against you (higher), your broker will keep increasing its collateral requirements. If you run out of cash as the price keeps rising, you will be forced to cover at a loss. That type of action among a large group of short-sellers pushes the price higher in a spiral -- a short squeeze.</p>\n<p><b>Six more meme stocks</b></p>\n<p>The action changes daily. On June 9, for example, shares of Clover Health Investments Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLOV\">$(CLOV)$</a> fell 24% after rising 86% the day before. Is the SEC watching?</p>\n<p>Here are the six additional meme stocks, following our initial group of eight , sorted by market capitalization as of the close on June 9:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45b4fabbee4e18ee1b473200ab3a7c4b\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"300\"></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLTR\">Palantir Technologies Inc.</a> (PLTR) provides a software platform used by government defense and intelligence agencies. It is the largest company on the list by market cap, but not by revenue, as you can see below. A year-to-date chart of its price performance shows how wild the meme-stock action can be:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d9a8e2dfc61b0e4ff70a8630193cecb\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"1038\"></p>\n<p>Palantir's stock was up 3% for 2021 through June 9, but its market cap had increased by 26% because the company had been raising cash by selling additional shares to investors. The company's following as a meme stock seems to spring more from its growth prospects than from short interest, which peaked at 8.5% of shares available for sale, according to FactSet.</p>\n<p>Wendy's Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WEN\">$(WEN)$</a> is another meme stock whose addition to the group may be a bit confusing, as the stock isn't heavily shorted and the company is stable. Thornton McEnery dug into the action on June 8, which may have included confusion over Wendy's ticker symbol , when the stock rose 26%.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WISH\">ContextLogic Inc.</a> (WISH) is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of two stocks on the new list that have fallen this year. The mobile e-commerce company's stock opened below its initial public offering price before the IPO.</p>\n<p><b>Short interest</b></p>\n<p>Keeping the group in the same order, here are levels of short interest as percentages of available shares and in dollars:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d0875b54168c760b950d250308eb5efd\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"390\"></p>\n<p>FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month. The data was updated overnight between June 9 and 10. The second update takes place around the 25th day of the month.</p>\n<p>Clover is the most heavily shorted stock on the list. Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said previously that a short percentage \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\" (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HDGE\">Ranger Equity Bear ETF</a> (HDGE), which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)</p>\n<p>A high percentage of shares sold short makes a stock especially dangerous for the short-sellers, because it can increase the intensity of any short squeeze.</p>\n<p>We have shown the short interest as a percentage of market cap in order to provide context. Tesla Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">$(TSLA)$</a> is an excellent example to provide more context, because the company has such a large market capitalization of $576.8 billion. Only 5.16% of the shares are sold short, but that comes to $29.8 billion in short interest -- the most (in dollars) for any stock in the S&amp;P 500. Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a> ranks second for dollars of short interest in the benchmark index, with 1.09% of shares sold short, which comes to $18.1 billion in short interest for a company with a market cap of $1.66 trillion.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOEV\">Canoo Inc.</a> (GOEV) is the second-most heavily shorted stock listed above, at 29.5%. The electric-vehicle maker was formed on Dec. 21 through the merger of Canoo Holdings Ltd. and Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. IV, a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. Canoo expects to produce its first vehicle in mid-2022 in limited quantities, with \"serial production launching in 2023,\" according to its 10-K report filed on March 31.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLNE\">Clean Energy Fuels Corp</a>. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLNE.AU\">$(CLNE.AU)$</a> provides natural gas for use as an alternative to gasoline or diesel for fleets of vehicles. It hasn't yet reported annual revenue. For the first quarter, the company reported $200.3 million in sales, up from $165.5 million in the first quarter of 2020. Clover merged with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IPOC.U\">Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings Corp. However, retail investors have bid up the stock, and shares are more than double their May low of $136.50. Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.</p>\n<p>Many investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.</p>\n<p>However, this is easier said than done.</p>\n<p>As I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up with<b>Sony</b>(NYSE:<b><u>SONY</u></b>),<b>Microsoft</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>MSFT</u></b>), and<b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.</p>\n<p>Hence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.</p>\n<p><b>Flawed Fundamentals</b></p>\n<p>Through the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.</p>\n<p>In many ways, GME reminds me of<b>Dish Network’s</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>DISH</u></b>) Blockbuster. There was a time when it looked like the home movie provider could do no wrong. However, it has become a cautionary tale of not evolving with the times. In 2004 then CEO of Blockbuster John Antioco understood the need to invest in an online platform. However, he faced stiff opposition from activist investor Carl Icahn who disagreed and removed him. In five years, the company was bankrupt.</p>\n<p>Understandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.</p>\n<p>The strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.</p>\n<p>But the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.</p>\n<p><b>Beginning of the End</b></p>\n<p>The biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME and<b>AMC</b>(NYSE:<b><u>AMC</u></b>) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.</p>\n<p>However, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleabout<b>Disney</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”</p>\n<p>In the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.</p>\n<p>Although new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.</p>\n<p><b>My Final Word</b></p>\n<p>For a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner?
