In a recent interview with Barron's, Wood even predicted EV sales to grow from 4.8 million units in 2021 to 40 million units in 2026.Wood owns several EV stocks, but the one that's stood out so far is industry leader Tesla. Tesla is, in fact, Wood's largest holding -- the stock constituted 7.54% across all of Ark Invest's family of exchange-traded funds (Pacer Swan SOS Fund of Funds ETFs) as of March 28.Yet, that's after Wood sold nearly 146,000 shares in Tesla on March 25. The last time Wood sold Tesla shares was in January.What's even more surprising, though, is the EV stock Wood bought same day: Nio. Yet the fact that she bought Nio stock for the first time ever deserves a lot more attention from investors as it confirms Wood's conviction in the Chinese EV stock.Why Nio caught Cathie Wood's attentionWood's interest in Tesla shouldn't come as a surprise. The company's foothold in the EV industry is hard to match and even catch up with, as Tesla already has nearly a million cars out on the roads and its sales have grown exponentially in recent years.Image source: Statista.Yet competition is heating up, and Wood seemingly doesn't want miss any opportunity EV companies other than Tesla can bring to the table. Nio is, in fact, often called the \"Tesla of China\" and has even said it aims to sell better products than Tesla but at lower costs.The fact that Wood bought Nio stock just one day after the company's fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 earnings release suggests something in the report caught Wood's attention. I believe it's the EV maker's growth plans.Nio's big plansNio expects to deliver 25,000-26,000 vehicles in the first quarter. That's roughly flat sequentially at the lower end of the guidance range and reflects the severe supply constraints facing the company.Yet Nio isn't worried as much yet and has ruled out any plans to raise vehicle prices to pass on higher costs to consumers for now. Tesla, in contrast, recently raised prices of its EVs twice within a matter of days.More importantly, despite the challenges, Nio is sticking with its plans to launch three EVs this year. The company is on track so far, having started deliveries of its flagship sedan, the ET7, on March 28. Nio plans to launch its first SUV, the ES7, in the coming weeks and its midsize sedan, the ET5, later in the year.Nio's revenue should grow as it expands its product portfolio. In 2021, Nio generated $5.6 billion in revenue backed by deliveries of 91,429 vehicles. And Nio has already set foot outside of China and is targeting one of the world's largest EV markets next: Europe. Nio will enter at least four countries in Europe this year.Image source: Statista.In the long term, Nio plans to create a mass-market brand to build affordable EVs ranging between $30,000 to $50,000 per car.Path to profitabilityAs a company that has its eyes set set on two of the world's largest EV markets, the growth potential for Nio is huge if can deliver on its plans. Nio also has a solid competitive advantage over its peers that could give it a lead especially during these inflationary times: its battery-as-a-service (BaaS) program.BaaS offers potential customers the option to save thousands of dollars by buying cars without batteries and instead paying a monthly subscription fee to swap and charge batteries on demand at Nio's swap stations. As of March 20, Nio had 864 battery swap stations and 760 supercharging stations in China, according to new energy vehicle (NEV)-focused website CnEvPost.Nio's agility was also on full display when it quickly listed its stock in Hong Kong in early March as the threat of having Chinese stocks delisted from the U.S. deepened.Most importantly, Nio just said it could break even as early as the fourth quarter of 2023 and deliver its first full year of profit in 2024.In an industry where scaling up production profitably is an uphill task, Nio sounds confident about its capabilities. But if you are among the ones who missed investing earlier, you must be wondering if it is already too late to invest in the electric vehicle (EV) pioneer.Let's discuss if it still makes sense to buy the stock.Tesla continues to growFounded in 2003, Tesla made its first annual profit, $721 million, in 2020. In 2021, the company's profit surged 665% to $5.5 billion. At the same time, its revenue grew 71% for the year. To that end, the company is opening new factories; it started deliveries from its German factory on Tuesday and is expected to open its Texas factory soon. In short, Tesla is well on its way to becoming one of the largest automakers in the world.And the company has managed to distinguish itself from traditional automakers by generating high margins.TSLA profit margin (quarterly). It reported an adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) margin of 5.4% for the fourth quarter. So Tesla's profit margin in the latest quarter well exceeded that of traditional automakers.Those high margins can be attributed to several factors. The first one is high-margin services, including full self-driving (FSD) features and over-the-air software updates, which command higher profits than traditional vehicle sales. Other factors include high vertical integration, an absence of a dealer network, and low marketing expenses.Innovation is Tesla's key differentiatorDespite the high growth, at a $1 trillion market capitalization, value-focused investors are understandably wary of Tesla. But the stock has defied traditional valuation metrics so far. The big question is: Can it continue to do so?While no one can answer that question conclusively, I'm inclined toward a yes. Apart from high margins and scale, some other factors could support Tesla's valuation in the future. The top one is the automaker's FSD feature.Tesla already has nearly 60,000 vehicles in its FSD beta program. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the vision-only FSD version in certain Tesla models a score of \"superior\" in collision avoidance and has given it a Top Safety Pick+, the highest possible rating.The company could have significant potential to expand its margins if its FSD feature shapes up as the company is hoping. Though there are other companies working on autonomous driving -- such as Alphabet with its Waymo and General Motors with its Cruise -- Tesla could have an edge. With the large number of vehicles in use, it could have vastly more data to train its program than its competitors have. And FSD features developed in-house will again tap into the benefits of vertical integration. It could even offer the feature for a fee to other automakers. But this is just speculation and may not turn out as expected.Though it could be difficult to imagine what Tesla will do next, its growth hinges on innovation. When that happens, Tesla stock's current valuation will start to make sense in retrospect. That's because the stock price will have likely risen more, making valuation incomprehensible again at that point in future!In short, while Tesla stock might not generate the 10-bagger returns it did in the past two years, it looks well positioned to generate market-beating returns in the years to come. Fears of an economic slowdown have been mounting as the Federal Reserve starts to tighten financial conditions while Russia’s Ukraine invasion threatens to keep key drivers of U.S. inflation high.</p><p>Lately, the attention has been on the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y, 2.478% and shorter 2-year yield, where the spread fell to 13 basis points on Tuesday, up from a high of about 130 basis points five months ago.</p><p>Read: The yield curve is speeding toward inversion — here’s what investors need to know</p><p>But that’s not the only plot on the Treasury yield curve investors closely watch. The Treasury Department sells securities that mature in a range from a few days to 30 years, providing a lot of plots on the curve to follow.</p><p>“The focus has been on the 10s and 2s,” said Mark Heppenstall, chief investment officer at Penn Mutual Asset Management, in Horsham, Penn, a northern suburb of Philadelphia.</p><p>“I will hold out until the 10s to 3-month bills inverts before I turn too negative on the economic outlook,” he said, calling it “the best leading indicator of trouble ahead.”</p><h2>Watch 10-year, 3-month</h2><p>Instead of falling, that spread climbed in March, continuing its path higher since turning negative two years ago at the onset of the pandemic (see chart).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7fe28818cd1806ee5afd5519332cf483\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"579\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>The 3-month to 10-year yield spread is climbing Bloomberg data, Goelzer Investment Management</span></p><p>“The 3-month Treasury bill really tracks the Federal Reserve’s target rate,” said Gavin Stephens, director of portfolio management at Goelzer Investment Management in Indiana, by phone.</p><p>“So it gives you a more immediate picture of if the Federal Reserve has entered a restrictive state in terms of monetary policy and, thus, giving the possibility that economic growth is going to contract, which would be bad for stocks.”</p><p>Stocks were lower Friday, but with the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.51% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.16% still up about 1.2% on the week. The three major indexes were 4.5% to 10.1% lower so far in 2022, according to FactSet.</p><p>By watching the 10s and 2s TMUBMUSD02Y, 2.280% spread, “You are looking at the expectations of where Fed Reserve interest rate policy is going to be over a period of two years,” Stephens said. “So, effectively, it’s working with a lag.”</p><p>On average, from the time the 10s and 2s curve inverts, until “there’s a recession, it’s almost two years,” he said, predicting that with unemployment recently pegged around 3.8% that, “this curve is going to invert when the economy is really strong.”</p><p>The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco also called the 3-month TMUBMUSD03M, 0.535% and 10-year curve relationship its “preferred spread measure because it has the strongest predictive power for future recessions,” such as in 2019, back when the yield curve was more regularly flashing recession warning signs.</p><p>“Did it see COVID coming?” Duffy said, of earlier yield curve inversions.</p><p>A more likely catalyst was that investors already were on a recession watch, with the American economy in its longest expansion period on record.</p><p>“There are a number of these curves that you need to look at in totality,” Duffy said. “We’ve always said look at many signals.”</p></body></html>","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Fears of an economic slowdown have been mounting as the Federal Reserve starts to tighten financial conditions while Russia’s Ukraine invasion threatens to keep key drivers of U.S. inflation high.Lately, the attention has been on the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y, 2.478% and shorter 2-year yield, where the spread fell to 13 basis points on Tuesday, up from a high of about 130 basis points five months ago.Read: The yield curve is speeding toward inversion — here’s what investors need to knowBut that’s not the only plot on the Treasury yield curve investors closely watch. The Treasury Department sells securities that mature in a range from a few days to 30 years, providing a lot of plots on the curve to follow.“The focus has been on the 10s and 2s,” said Mark Heppenstall, chief investment officer at Penn Mutual Asset Management, in Horsham, Penn, a northern suburb of Philadelphia.“I will hold out until the 10s to 3-month bills inverts before I turn too negative on the economic outlook,” he said, calling it “the best leading indicator of trouble ahead.”Watch 10-year, 3-monthInstead of falling, that spread climbed in March, continuing its path higher since turning negative two years ago at the onset of the pandemic (see chart).The 3-month to 10-year yield spread is climbing Bloomberg data, Goelzer Investment Management“The 3-month Treasury bill really tracks the Federal Reserve’s target rate,” said Gavin Stephens, director of portfolio management at Goelzer Investment Management in Indiana, by phone.“So it gives you a more immediate picture of if the Federal Reserve has entered a restrictive state in terms of monetary policy and, thus, giving the possibility that economic growth is going to contract, which would be bad for stocks.”Stocks were lower Friday, but with the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.51% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.16% still up about 1.2% on the week. NPS is rated on a scale of -100 to +100 and captures whether a company's customers would recommend the product. Generally, a positive score is good, while anything above +30 is excellent, making Pinterest's score stand out.Best yet for investors, businesses with excellent NPS scores tend to outperform the market thanks to happier customers. As a result of this NPS score, its remaining international growth runway, and a meager price to free cash flow ratio of just 23, buying and holding Pinterest at these prices could move your retirement years ahead of schedule.Zoom Video CommunicationsLike Pinterest, Zoom Video Communications ( ZM -0.46% ) boasts an excellent NPS of +53 thanks to its suite of hybrid work-enabling products. Whether it's the Zoom phone, events, meetings, or rooms, and now its contact center, the company's unified communications platform is poised to evolve to meet the needs of its ever-expanding customer base.However, with decelerating growth rates that saw revenue increase only 21% in the fiscal 2022 fourth quarter -- compared to growth of 369% the same time last year -- Zoom has seen its stock punished.Now 70% below its 52-week highs, the market is pricing Zoom like it faces an existential crisis, but that couldn't be further from the truth. After generating $1.5 billion in free cash flow (FCF) over the last year, Zoom now trades at just 25 times FCF.Data by YCharts.Any time a company's price to free cash flow ratio approaches its sales growth rate as is the case here, it catches my attention as reasonably priced growth.Zoom's promising NPS, product optionality, and cheap FCF generation make it a prime sell-off stock to consider holding forever.DocuSignRounding out our trio of high NPS stocks is DocuSign ( DOCU 1.84% ) and its excellent score of +53. Led by its popular e-signature product, the company now has its eyes on expanding its broader Agreement Cloud offering.This Agreement Cloud consists of four key pillars: prepare, sign, act, and manage. As e-signature is by far DocuSign's most prominent product, it intends to use a land-and-expand business model to grow its sales.After getting its foot in the door with nearly 1.2 million customers thanks to its e-signature product, it now aims to build upon these relationships by offering anything and everything related to the agreement space.However, with DocuSign seeing its billings growth drop from 56% in fiscal 2021 to 37% in fiscal 2022, the market has sent the stock's price downward.It has also declined nearly 70% from its 52-week high, but this reaction from the market is starting to look overdone. Despite this slowdown in billings growth, DocuSign still posted 45% revenue growth last year and a good net dollar retention rate of 119% in the latest quarter.Net dollar retention measures how much DocuSign's existing customers grew their spending with anything above 100% showing expansion. As time passes, this metric will be vital to investors as it will highlight how the Agreement Cloud's growth is faring.Trading at 44 times free cash flow, DocuSign is the most expensive stock of this trio -- and the fastest growing. Shopify continues to stand out for its ability to arm merchants of all sizes with the tools to establish an online presence that plays nice with most popular e-commerce and social media platforms.TwilioThere is a lot to like about Twilio, the undisputed leader of in-app communication solutions. Twilio's cloud-based tools help many of the most popular apps be more effective by providing two-way communication with users -- for everything from service notifications to verification -- without having to leave an app.It's growing briskly. Revenue rose 61% in 2021, including a 54% year-over-year uptick for its latest quarter. Acquisitions have helped pad Twilio's growth over the years. Organic revenue rose a more modest 44% clip last year if you back out the bump in political election season revenue from late 2020, but the appeal of the platform remains strong. Retention rates are still healthy, and Twilio continues to successfully expand its offerings.Adaptive BiotechnologiesIt's been a rough year for Adaptive Biotechnologies. Its CFO resigned in January, and earlier this month the biotech upstart announced that it would be laying off 12% of its staff. The reorganization is part of Adaptive narrowing the focus of its immune system genetic sequencing technology to key in on minimal residual disease and immune medicine.The stock has been cut by more than half so far in 2022, and it's down 82% since peaking 14 months ago. Now, due to its presence in three EU countries, the company once known as Square has an easier path to serving the rest of the Eurozone.Moreover, it added cryptocurrency capabilities with its Bitcoin trading platform in both Square and Cash App. This likely helped it almost catch up to PayPal Holdings' Venmo in terms of popularity. Also, according to Research and Markets, the addressable market for fintech is expected to reach $31.5 trillion by 2026, a 27% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) that should bring opportunities for lots of companies in this sector, including Square.Block increased its 2021 revenue by 86% compared with 2020, 57% if excluding Bitcoin. This led to adjusted earnings of $898 million in the same period, 111% higher than year-ago levels. Analysts only expect 7% revenue growth in 2022 before it rebounds to 22% the next year.Still, the stock has lost more than half of its value since its peak last summer. With a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of about 4, it has fallen from the double-digit sales multiples of early last year. This makes it more reasonably priced as Block seeks to meet the financial needs of more businesses and individuals.2. DigitalOceanAt first glance, companies such as Amazon and Microsoft dominate the cloud industry and cater their services to lots of big names. However, their product offerings are not really catered to the specific needs of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). DigitalOcean has built a high-growth enterprise by filling that gap. But while it offers simple, affordable pricing plans tailored to the needs of SMEs, its most vital advantage seems to lie in its community. Members of this community give and receive advice, helping these businesses resolve IT challenges that might otherwise hamper smaller enterprises.Also, DigitalOcean already claims about 600,000 customers in 185 countries. and the cloud market should also leave plenty of room for company growth. Grand View Research estimates the cloud infrastructure market will grow to $1.55 trillion by 2030, up from $484 billion today.DigitalOcean's 2021 revenue of $429 million makes up only a tiny fraction of that addressable market, though that was a 35% increase compared with 2020. Moreover, it cut its yearly loss to about $20 million, down from $44 million in 2020. Furthermore, revenue estimates for between $564 million and $568 million amount to 32% growth if the estimate holds, pointing to little if any slowdowns.Additionally, the stock has dropped 55% from its November high, taking its P/S ratio down to around 13. While this is higher than its larger competitors, a lower stock price and rapid revenue growth rate should take this stock much higher as the need for the cloud within SMEs continues to expand.3. RokuRoku has managed to capitalize on the transition of televised media to streaming. Through its aggregation of services and the offering of its Roku platform and channel, it provides an avenue by which companies can fund programming through advertising.Furthermore, Roku continues its expansion into Europe and Latin America, giving it leverage as companies like Alphabet attempt to compete. Additionally, the company has integrated its operating system into new televisions and offered its equipment at a low cost, easing the adoption of its platform.Roku claimed about 60 million users as of the end of 2021. Also, Research and Markets forecasts that the global digital advertising market will grow to $764 billion by 2025 and to $1.45 trillion by 2030 for a CAGR of 13.7%. Roku appears well-positioned to capture much of this increase as it currently only operates in roughly 20 countries and has plans for further expansion.So far, Roku has barely begun to scratch the surface of its potential. In 2021, it generated almost $2.8 billion in revenue, 55% more than in 2020. The revenue growth helped the company earn $242 million in net income, an improvement from the $18 million loss in 2020.Admittedly, the first-quarter outlook for 25% year-over-year revenue growth represents a slowdown. Still, the stock has fallen by about 75% from its high last July. Also, the P/S ratio now stands at six, down from 33 last February. Some of the most popular (and most promising) growth stocks seem to rise and fall by 5% or more every day, and many are 40%, 50%, or more off their highs.To be sure,some of the beaten-down growth stocks are lower for a reason. But with others, the recent downturn can be a great opportunity to search for long-term bargains. With that in mind, here are two stocks that look especially appealing at the current prices.An e-commerce leader with massive potentialSince reaching a share price of more than $300 in November, handmade and unique item marketplace Etsy has seen its share price cut in half, despite posting strong results throughout its business.Over the past couple of years, the number of active buyers and sellers on Etsy's platform have both more than doubled, and the number of frequent buyers has more than tripled. And while some of the growth was certainly helped by the COVID-19 pandemic, the numbers continue to trend in the right direction. For example, Etsy's fourth-quarter merchandise volume was an all-time record for the company, and the average active buyer spent 16% more than in the fourth quarter of 2020.Etsy has done a great job of adding value to its namesake platform with things like advanced advertising options and free shipping availability. It has also made several strategic acquisitions that should broaden its user base even further and grow its addressable market opportunity.And finally, speaking of Etsy's addressable market, the company has an estimated $466 billion total addressable market opportunity from online retail sales in its seven core markets around the world, and it has captured less than 3% of that so far.A profitable social media company with many ways to growWith shares more than 70% below their 52-week high, Pinterest is looking like an absolute steal right now.To be sure, there are some valid reasons for Pinterest's pullback. Specifically, user growth (or lack thereof) is a legitimate concern right now. In the fourth quarter of 2021, Pinterest's active user base actually declined by 6% year over year. In simple terms, with fewer COVID-19 restrictions, people have less time to browse ideas online than they did a year ago.However, the slump in user growth should be temporary, and the company is doing a fantastic job of monetizing its user base. Pinterest's average revenue per user grew by 23% over the past year, and in the international user base (where 80% of users are), the increase was a staggering 62%. Pinterest's revenue per user is still a small fraction of other leading social media platforms, and there's still a big gap between international and domestic monetization, so the company could multiply its revenue several times over even without user growth.Be prepared for a wild ride, at least for nowIt's important to emphasize that I have absolutely no idea what these stocks will do over the next couple of months, or even for the rest of the year. There are simply too many variables, such as inflation, interest rates, and the Ukraine situation, that could put pressure on these and other stocks in the near term.
