Now, GameStop made some early gains in premarket trading on Monday with a new cryptocurrency wallet.The company reversed those gains going into today’s trading session, and I remain bearish. This company’s problems likely aren’t going to be solved by a crypto wallet. Getting in now is likely not a good play.The last 12 months for GameStop shares have been a mostly downhill ride. Some recoveries took place over that period, but none lasted more than a few days. Overall, the company is trading about 50% lower than it was this time last year.Wall Street’s TakeTurning to Wall Street, GameStop has a Moderate Sell consensus rating. That’s based on just one Sell assigned in the past three months. GameStop’s price target of $30 implies 68.6% downside potential.Keep in mind, though, that there is only one recent analyst rating.Investor Sentiment is Distressingly MixedOn the surface, GameStop should be an easy target to stay away from. The company boasts a Smart Score on TipRanks of 2 out of 10, the second-lowest ranking and the next lowest step in “underperform” overall. Yet, there are some odd bright spots for GameStop investors.The biggest bright spot is insider trading. GameStop insiders are heavily buy-weighted. They’ve been so for the last year. The last insider transaction was recorded back in February, and buyers led sellers three to two. Meanwhile, for the full year, it was an even bigger win for the bullish GameStop trader, as insider buy transactions led sell transactions 10 to four.Retail investors holding GameStop in their portfolios on TipRanks, meanwhile, are a bit mixed. While the total number is up 0.6% over the last 30 days, it’s down 0.2% over the last seven days.GameStop’s dividend history would be more of a help if it held out. The company once had a stable dividend, paying routinely since 2012. That stopped like a clock dropped off a building after March 2019, though. GameStop hasn’t paid a dividend since.Then there’s the matter of hedge funds, as based on the TipRanks 13-F Tracker. Hedge funds have slashed their positions in GameStop to bare-bones levels in recent months. In fact, GameStop positions are now so small compared to what they were in 2020 that they no longer appear on a chart.Hedge funds did increase their position by 58,800 shares last quarter. However, this means little against the roughly 6.224 million shares held in December 2020.Minor Successes Overshadowed by Everything ElseEssentially, what GameStop is trying to do here is one of the last few things that it actually can do. The wallet is able to handle not only cryptocurrencies—it’s an Ethereum wallet, at last report—but it will also allow gamers to both send and receive in-game assets without needing to leave a web browser.This will dovetail into plans to bring out an NFT (non-fungible token) marketplace starting sometime before the end of July. The beta version has already launched and offered some success.However, it’s clear that the company’s disastrous earnings report—which boasted a $147.5 million loss—is overshadowing the crypto-based successes the company recently showed off.In fact, that’s a pretty fair way to describe GameStop, in general, these days: minor successes overshadowed by a crashing business supported by a business model that has less and less validity with each passing day.We know that customers are increasingly turning to digital downloads when it comes to getting their games. While 2020 is an outlier year thanks to the impact of COVID-19 on the game development community, it’s clear that the overall trend is fewer physical release games and many, many more digital releases.This leaves GameStop—whose primary business model is effectively “buy used games cheap and resell them at a profit”—in a terrible situation. This is partially why GameStop tried expanding into used electronics back in 2017. The writing was already on the wall for games, and GameStop needed to augment its revenue stream.Investors, meanwhile, are in that same terrible position. At least, they will be until GameStop can effectively figure out how to get its revenue back on track. It gets worse from there.Employees are suing the company over labor laws in New York. The hedge fund that shorted GameStop closed its doors altogether. It’s clear something needs to change at GameStop if investors want hope of realizing real gains.Concluding ViewsPretty much everything about GameStop does not look good right now. The hedge funds have all but abandoned ship. Retail investors are shaky. There’s been no dividend in the last three years. Just to top it off, GameStop’s business model is sinking fast, and attempts to recover haven’t worked out well.Throw in the overwhelming downside potential currently on this stock from the lone analyst actually providing perspective, and the picture worsens to such a degree that being bullish is next to impossible.Thus, I’m bearish on GameStop, a company whose best days are behind it. The beleaguered video game retailer beat top-line estimates for the fourth quarter and counteracted the negative secular trends in its software sales. Nevertheless, its operating expenses outpaced its top-line growth by a hefty margin, spoiling what was otherwise an interesting quarter for GME stock.GameStop was the ‘original meme-stock.’ Its shares surged to unfathomable heights early last year before shedding most of those gains in subsequent months. Nevertheless, those looking for long-term value with the company found nothing.Several analysts, including myself, have talked about the inability of GameStop to stay abreast with the step-changes in the gaming industry. However, in its most recent quarter, the top-tier management is finally taking notice.Do these positive developments justify GME stock’s lofty valuation? The answer to that is an emphatic “NO!” One could argue that GameStop is looking to climb its way back in the gaming business. However, to say it could return to past glory is far-fetched.Mounting LossesGameStop generated $2.25 billion in sales during the fourth quarter, up roughly 6% from last year. Growth, however, came at a sizeable cost as its selling, general, and administrative expenses shot up 29%. The massive bump in expenses took the company operating loss to $166.8 million against an $18.8 million profit in the previous year.Moreover, on a non-GAAP basis, its adjusted EBITDA loss came in at $126.9 million, compared with a $50.3 million profit from the prior-year quarter. Additionally, cash flow from operations was also negative, at $110 million from a positive $164.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2020. Frustratingly, the company didn’t provide any outlook either.Furthermore, stock-based compensation increased from $2 billion to $10 million. The bump seems way out of line, considering how tough it has been for the company from a fundamental perspective. However, with such a volatile stock, the compensation makes some sense in retaining the company’s executive talent.Plenty Of Bright SpotsThe operational loss was disheartening, but there were still a lot of positives to take from the fourth quarter. It was the first time the company management talked about its past mistakes. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Matt Furlong states that “we have learned from the mistakes of the past decade when GameStop failed to adapt to the future of gaming.” That admission has been a long time coming, which could potentially steer the business in a new direction.Perhaps the most encouraging development during the quarter was that software sales grew a healthy 7%. Software sales outpaced hardware sales, which grew by just 2%. Moreover, partnerships with PC gaming companies such as Lenovo and Alienware helped grow PC gaming revenues by 150% for the year.Furthermore, GameStop confirmed the launch of its much-talked-about non fungible token (NFT) marketplace in the second quarter. CEO Furlong sees massive long-term potential in a $40 billion NFT market. Embracing the digital world and its unique offerings will only pay more dividends for the business in the future.Additionally, the company has built a staggering war chest, which includes $1.2 billion in net cash. Despite what the bears may say about its valuation, its enormous cash balance provides wiggle room for the business. Moreover, it can now push on and invest in new growth avenues for expansion.Is GME Stock a Buy?GameStop and other meme stocks soared to ridiculous heights last year and have fortified their balance sheets. GameStop, in particular, paid most of its debt and will raise more cash this year. It has plenty of cushion to explore new revenue opportunities and become a different company down the line.However, there are a lot of ifs and buts to its comeback story, which still make GME stock a tough long-term bet. It is still an attractive short-term play, though, as the Reddit chatter will continue being a factor in its price. It will be interesting to see how the new U.S. Securities and Exchange proposals impact short squeezes. Two such stocks—GameStop (GME)and AMC Entertainment (AMC)—have seen their share of ups and downs as part of the meme stock movement.However, are these merely flash-in-the-pan inspirations? Here today and gone tomorrow like the memes for which they’re named? Or are these potential long-term opportunities? I’m starting to lean bullish on AMC, though I am bearish on GameStop. AMC is making some baffling and yet thrilling moves, while GameStop is still…well…GameStop.The last 12 months for GameStop have been a wild ride by any standard. Trading in a range between around $78 and $302, GameStop has been the soul of volatility. Meanwhile, AMC saw a massive spike back in May, from which it has been frantically retreating ever since.However, a recent rally has emerged, thanks to one key and highly incongruous move that may have turned the company into a serious play.Sticking to and Breaking from the Old ModelGameStop should, theoretically, be doing better than it is. After all, interest in the video game markets spiked dramatically during the pandemic. Even after the government-required lockdowns began to lift, there was still plenty of interest in staying home and playing games.Reports suggest that the gaming market, worth $198.4 billion in 2021, should reach $339.95 billion by 2027’s arrival. Yet, GameStop’s strong dependence on used, physical video games doesn’t bode well for it, especially in a market increasingly dominated by digital gaming purchases.When customers can download their game of choice and pay for it via credit card, debit card, or even digital transfer, it limits the impact of a used game dealer. Moreover, some consoles—the Xbox Series S in particular—will only work with digital games.However, it’s AMC that really catches the attention here. It was in a similar position to GameStop. It was in an industry that benefited substantially from the lockdowns, but it wasn’t in a position to take advantage of that benefit.AMC’s focus on brick-and-mortar theaters in a market that was increasingly going to streaming hurt it badly. Streaming was already a threat to the brick-and-mortar theater, but the pandemic exacerbated the problem.AMC’s recent move to invest in Hycroft Mining(HYMC)changed the picture. Now, AMC had an industry for boom times—the movies—and a heavy presence in an industry for bust times as well in gold mining.While the two industries aren’t even sort of complementary, it’s not like ticket takers are going out with picks and shovels. No, AMC just has a presence in a company that mines gold.Historically, the value of gold has never gone to zero. Sometimes it’s been less profitable than others, depending on the cost of inputs like fuel and labor to pull it out of the ground, but gold has always had some value to it.So now, AMC has a presence in a market that should lend it some support in bad times. With theaters, in general, coming back into play and Hollywood rolling out the big-name movies again, AMC is in an excellent position to make a comeback here as well.Concluding ViewsIt’s clear that some meme stocks are better than others.GameStop looks increasingly like a bad play, and it never looked all that good, to begin with. Its business model is still very much dependent on used physical titles. That’s bad news in an increasingly digital environment. Its ability to engage in much change is also limited.With a massive downside potential, minimal and declining hedge fund involvement, and no real dividend value to speak of, GameStop continues to look like a bad investment plan.AMC, however, is different. Branching out into precious metals gives it a whole new edge and a perfect market for bad times as well as good. Considering the company is set to find more of these “transformative deals,” this could be the start of something big. Though AMC has its own substantial downside risks, it also has more justification for keeping its current pricing than GameStop does.Both AMC and GameStop are risky right now. However, AMC does seem to have a better chance of paying off on that risk than GameStop does. Yet as with the previous times in recent months that AMC stock has spiked, expect its recent move back above $30 per share to be short-lived.The rally by AMC and the stock market have inspired many meme-stock investors to dive back into AMC. But these new developments do not do much to bolster the stock’s outlook, and a recent investment by the company is hardly the “big deal” that some seem to believe it is.Meanwhile, the resurgence in the bullishness towards AMC stock among investors may not last. Some of the previous uncertainty about the Fed’s rate hikes may be easing. Still, other worries, including the possibility of a recession, may cause stocks to ultimately fall. Such a decline would result in meme plays like AMC falling more quickly than the overall market.That’s particularly true because AMC stock continues to trade at a high premium to its underlying value. Don’t get tricked by its latest move higher. In time, the latest surge will likely prove to be little more than a “dead cat bounce.”Why AMC Stock Has Bounced BackAs I mentioned above, multiple factors are behind AMC’s jump from around $16 to more than $20 per share in recent days. First is the factor that has sparked the most headlines: the company announced that it plans to buy22% ofHycroft Mining Holding Corporation(NASDAQ:HYMC).Secondly, the stock market has performed well since mid-March. The market’s resurgence kicked off following Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s latest remarks on the central bank’s rate-hike plans. Clearing up some of the uncertainty, the chairman’s statements have helped to lessen some of the investors’ pessimism towards the market. Unfortunately, both of these factors will only temporarily impact the price of AMC stock.But there are important reasons to believe that the market has not yet bottomed. Specifically, we know for sure that further rate hikes are coming, and that the chances of a recession have risen.If a recession is indeed in the cards, the relief rally will fade, and stocks will move lower. This will likely reverse AMC’s recent gains and quite possibly send it even lower, as a recession isn’t just bad for the stock, but for the company’s business as well.AMC’s Business Continues to Flounder, and the Hycroft Deal Won’t Save the DayA recession would undermine AMC stock in two ways. First, if an economic downturn does occur, the stock market will sink. And as we saw in the first 2.5 months of the year, when the stock market retreats, meme plays like AMC underperform.Additionally, a recession will, of course, mean that the American economy is contracting. During the current economic expansion, robust consumer spending has helped AMC’s business partially recover from the pandemic. Yet with inflation at 40-year highs, consumer spending is already starting to slip,and an economic downturn would cause household spending to decline further.Even worse for AMC, streaming’s popularity could increase further and take more market share from theaters, as more movie fans opt to save money by watching new flicks at home. The resulting impact on AMC’s performance will outweigh the limited gains that it will generate from its Hycroft investment.Speaking of Hycroft, as anotherInvestorPlacecolumnist, Dana Blankenhorn, recently put it, all that glitters is not gold when it comes to this deal. While Hycroft, a junior miner, is sitting on a gold mine (both literally and figuratively), there’s a reason why HYMC stock is a small-cap penny stock.It’s going to take far more cash than AMC’s investment or the proceeds from an at-the-market secondary offering for Hycroft to extract the tens of billions of dollars of hard-to-reach gold and silver that are supposed to be in its northern Nevada mine. A payoff from AMC’s investment in the miner is years away at best and will never arrive at worst.The Takeaway From AMC’s Recent RallyAs I argued back in February, the fair value of AMC is less than $10. And that’s assuming that it continues to deliver results in -line with its Q4 earnings. An economic downturn will push the shares closer to their fair value and lower that fair value as belt-tightening among consumers will stymie its post-virus recovery.So what should investors do with AMC stock after its latest surge? Those who own the shares should exploit the stock’s rally by selling them.
