Its recovery momentum has also","content":"<html><head></head><body><p><b>Summary</b></p><ul><li>The QQQ ETF has underperformed the S&P 500 over the past year. Its recovery momentum has also languished behind the S&P 500 at the recent October bottom.</li><li>Despite that, we discuss why investors can remain optimistic, as significant pessimism has likely been baked into QQQ's relative underperformance.</li><li>We highlight why QQQ's leading sectors and company constituents could outperform the downgraded analysts' estimates in 2023.</li><li>But note that the Fed could still spoil the recovery party here if it decides to turn more aggressive at the upcoming December FOMC meeting.</li><li>Maintain Buy.</li></ul><p><b>Thesis</b></p><p>The Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ) has underperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) (VOO) since we updated its bottoming process in early October. We noted that investors have remained tentative over the more richly-valued tech sector, preferring the more defensively-configured SPY.</p><p>With the market expecting the Fed to remain hawkish through at least H1'23, QQQ's momentum could remain in the doldrums for a while longer. Moreover, last week's employment report suggests that the Fed could force are pricing of the Fed fund rate(FFR) forward curve if the market anticipates a further steepening of the projected terminal rate.</p><p>Notwithstanding, investors should also bear in mind that the QQQ has outperformed the SPY consistently exiting every bear market/significant pullback over the last 15 years. Hence, we believe the pessimism in the QQQ could be reversed quickly if the market anticipates a less hawkish Fed moving ahead.</p><p>However, the 5Y breakeven inflation rate has crept up recently, likely reflecting the market's concerns over the recent employment report. Hence, we assess that QQQ should remain in a consolidation zone above its November lows as its leading constituent stocks could continue to struggle for momentum.</p><p>Still, we parsed that analysts have already turned increasingly pessimistic over the QQQ's leading sectors, which augurs well for a re-rating moving ahead. We believe the bar has been significantly lowered for QQQ's leading sector constituents, which should improve its ability to outperform the Street's estimates in 2023/24.</p><p>Hence, we remain constructive over QQQ's buying sentiments and price action, despite its relative underperformance to the market.</p><p>Maintain Buy.</p><p><b>QQQ: Wall Street Increasingly Pessimistic</b></p><table><tbody><tr><td>Sector</td><td>Weighting %</td><td>Forward P/E</td></tr><tr><td>Technology</td><td>47.7%</td><td>21.7x</td></tr><tr><td>Consumer Discretionary</td><td>15.4%</td><td>23.2x</td></tr><tr><td>Communication</td><td>14.9%</td><td>15.1x</td></tr><tr><td>S&P 500</td><td>N.A.</td><td>17.7x</td></tr></tbody></table><p><i>QQQ ETF leading sector weightings %. Data source: S&P Cap IQ</i></p><p>QQQ is a tech-heavy ETF with a tech sector weighting of nearly 48%. Consumer discretionary and communications accounted for another 30% weighting. As such, QQQ's top three sectors accounted for nearly 78% of its total weighting.</p><p>However, the performance of the three sectors in Q3 was relatively poor, with forward guidance also tepid. As such, analysts have turned increasingly pessimistic in their prospects through CY23, as they lowered their earnings estimates markedly.</p><p>Notably, technology, communication, and consumer discretionary were among the top four sectors that saw the largest earnings estimates cuts for CY23.</p><p><b>But QQQ's Leading Companies Continue To Push Ahead</b></p><table><thead><tr><th>Name</th><th>% Weight</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Apple (AAPL)</td><td>12.95%</td></tr><tr><td>Microsoft (MSFT)</td><td>10.37%</td></tr><tr><td>Amazon (AMZN)</td><td>5.23%</td></tr><tr><td>Google (GOOG)</td><td>3.39%</td></tr><tr><td>Tesla (TSLA)</td><td>3.30%</td></tr><tr><td>Google (GOOGL)</td><td>3.28%</td></tr><tr><td>NVIDIA (NVDA)</td><td>3.22%</td></tr></tbody></table><p><i>QQQ leading stock holdings by weighting. Data source: S&P Cap IQ</i></p><p>Accordingly, the performance of its leading constituent in Q3 has been subpar. Investors and analysts are increasingly concerned over Apple's ability to post a solid CQ4 as it faces significant delays over its iPhone Pro series production in Zhengzhou, China.</p><p>Microsoft and Amazon demonstrated that even cloud computing wasn't spared from more scrutiny by its enterprise customers as they curtailed consumption-related cloud spending.</p><p>However, Amazon's optimism over the secular growth drivers in cloud computing remains resilient. The company updated recently that it's committed to increasing its hiring for AWS, even as it commenced its layoff recently in other divisions.</p><p>Moreover, by collaborating with Nvidia, Microsoft has continued to drive further commitment toward its cloud-based AI supercomputer ambitions. Therefore, Stratechery stressed that Nvidia bears could be calling for the company's demise too early as it demonstrated its AI-driven competitive moat to drive hyper scaler demand for its A100 and H100 chips.</p><p>Moreover, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized that the company's well-integrated multi-cloud offering has a distinct competitive edge against its keen rivals. Nadella highlighted:</p><blockquote>The strength of Microsoft's cloud business is its ability to offer a wide range of products, including infrastructure services like Azure and the business chat service Teams, to companies under one roof. Instead of buying 15 different subscriptions, [the customer can] get more value out of what you already have. -Nikkei Asia</blockquote><p>As discussed in a recent article, Google has also demonstrated a willingness to improve its operating leverage. Some investors could be concerned with its "bloated" cost base as Google navigates a significant ad downturn. However, it has demonstrated its ability to pull levers relating to its YouTube segment to elevate its competitiveness against TikTok (BDNCE).</p><p>Management also seems to be accelerating Google Cloud toward profitability. Notwithstanding, Google Cloud remains in a "catch-up" phase. Its recovery momentum has also languished behind the S&P 500 at the recent October bottom.Despite that, we discuss why investors can remain optimistic, as significant pessimism has likely been baked into QQQ's relative underperformance. We highlight why QQQ's leading sectors and company constituents could outperform the downgraded analysts' estimates in 2023.But note that the Fed could still spoil the recovery party here if it decides to turn more aggressive at the upcoming December FOMC meeting.Maintain Buy.ThesisThe Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ) has underperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) (VOO) since we updated its bottoming process in early October. We noted that investors have remained tentative over the more richly-valued tech sector, preferring the more defensively-configured SPY.With the market expecting the Fed to remain hawkish through at least H1'23, QQQ's momentum could remain in the doldrums for a while longer. Moreover, last week's employment report suggests that the Fed could force are pricing of the Fed fund rate(FFR) forward curve if the market anticipates a further steepening of the projected terminal rate.Notwithstanding, investors should also bear in mind that the QQQ has outperformed the SPY consistently exiting every bear market/significant pullback over the last 15 years. Hence, we believe the pessimism in the QQQ could be reversed quickly if the market anticipates a less hawkish Fed moving ahead. However, the 5Y breakeven inflation rate has crept up recently, likely reflecting the market's concerns over the recent employment report. Hence, we assess that QQQ should remain in a consolidation zone above its November lows as its leading constituent stocks could continue to struggle for momentum.Still, we parsed that analysts have already turned increasingly pessimistic over the QQQ's leading sectors, which augurs well for a re-rating moving ahead. We believe the bar has been significantly lowered for QQQ's leading sector constituents, which should improve its ability to outperform the Street's estimates in 2023/24.Hence, we remain constructive over QQQ's buying sentiments and price action, despite its relative underperformance to the market.Maintain Buy.QQQ: Wall Street Increasingly PessimisticSectorWeighting %Forward P/ETechnology47.7%21.7xConsumer Discretionary15.4%23.2xCommunication14.9%15.1xS&P 500N.A.17.7xQQQ ETF leading sector weightings %. Data source: S&P Cap IQQQQ is a tech-heavy ETF with a tech sector weighting of nearly 48%. Consumer discretionary and communications accounted for another 30% weighting. As such, QQQ's top three sectors accounted for nearly 78% of its total weighting. However, the performance of the three sectors in Q3 was relatively poor, with forward guidance also tepid. As such, analysts have turned increasingly pessimistic in their prospects through CY23, as they lowered their earnings estimates markedly.Notably, technology, communication, and consumer discretionary were among the top four sectors that saw the largest earnings estimates cuts for CY23.But QQQ's Leading Companies Continue To Push AheadName% WeightApple (AAPL)12.95%Microsoft (MSFT)10.37%Amazon (AMZN)5.23%Google (GOOG)3.39%Tesla (TSLA)3.30%Google (GOOGL)3.28%NVIDIA (NVDA)3.22%QQQ leading stock holdings by weighting. Data source: S&P Cap IQAccordingly, the performance of its leading constituent in Q3 has been subpar. Investors and analysts are increasingly concerned over Apple's ability to post a solid CQ4 as it faces significant delays over its iPhone Pro series production in Zhengzhou, China.Microsoft and Amazon demonstrated that even cloud computing wasn't spared from more scrutiny by its enterprise customers as they curtailed consumption-related cloud spending. However, Amazon's optimism over the secular growth drivers in cloud computing remains resilient. The company updated recently that it's committed to increasing its hiring for AWS, even as it commenced its layoff recently in other divisions. Moreover, by collaborating with Nvidia, Microsoft has continued to drive further commitment toward its cloud-based AI supercomputer ambitions. Therefore, Stratechery stressed that Nvidia bears could be calling for the company's demise too early as it demonstrated its AI-driven competitive moat to drive hyper scaler demand for its A100 and H100 chips. Moreover, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized that the company's well-integrated multi-cloud offering has a distinct competitive edge against its keen rivals. Nadella highlighted:The strength of Microsoft's cloud business is its ability to offer a wide range of products, including infrastructure services like Azure and the business chat service Teams, to companies under one roof. Instead of buying 15 different subscriptions, [the customer can] get more value out of what you already have. -Nikkei AsiaAs discussed in a recent article, Google has also demonstrated a willingness to improve its operating leverage. Some investors could be concerned with its \"bloated\" cost base as Google navigates a significant ad downturn. However, it has demonstrated its ability to pull levers relating to its YouTube segment to elevate its competitiveness against TikTok (BDNCE).Management also seems to be accelerating Google Cloud toward profitability. Notwithstanding, Google Cloud remains in a \"catch-up\" phase. Hence, the company's focus remains penetrating further into critical industry verticals and improving its market share gains against AWS and Azure. And if any Tesla bears need a reminder that the company is far from finished, China's media just reported that the company posted record China-manufactured deliveries in November. Instead of pushing back against the recent easing of financial conditions, Powell made the same comments as he did at the November FOMC meeting and even stressed caution on overtightening.</p><p>This market has come to a point where anything that is not more hawkish than expected is dovish, leading to a big pop in the S&P 500 following Powell's appearance. While Powell said almost nothing new, he didn't say enough to cause the market's recent easing of financial conditions to reverse.</p><p>It was shocking to hear because at every point before November 30, when financial conditions had eased too much, Powell would push back against the market. But this time, he didn't, and by not pushing back, he is telling the market he is okay with the recent easing of financial conditions.</p><p>The real question is why Powell would be okay with financial conditions easing. It is the exact opposite of what he has been saying about his desire to raise rates into restrictive territory.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b14e7287ef2ebde557c2c762382b6f3e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>What is even stranger than that is that the jobs data on Friday showed stronger-than-expected non-farm payroll numbers. But, wages rose by 0.6% month-over-month, the hottest reading since January 2022. They also increased by 5.1% year-over-year, while last month's numbers were all revised higher.</p><p>Meanwhile, the ISM manufacturing data was weaker than expected, suggesting the US economy is inching closer to recession. The ISM report noted that the reading of 49 indicated that the REAL GDP growth in the fourth quarter was around 0.1%.</p><p>The move in the ISM report indicates that S&P 500 earnings growth could turn lower in 2023 and perhaps go negative. The relationship between the ISM manufacturing survey goes back a long time, and they, too, tend to track each other very well.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/34b4ece5032dcd46b930fc970e935b00\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"337\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>The slowing growth and higher wages suggest the recent changes in attitude from the bond market. The data suggest the economy could be very close to or is in a recession, which is likely to squeeze margins for companies and earnings. Earnings estimates do not reflect margin compression and are still pricing a lot of margin expansion.</p><p>Analysts' estimates suggest that earnings in 2023 are expected to grow by around 7%, while sales are expected to rise by about 3%. Currently, analysts' estimates are pricing in margin expansion in 2023. For there to be margin expansion, costs will need to be reduced; otherwise, earnings estimates are too high and need to be slashed.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c45e0b1141d0fecf0649dd89230770d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"369\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Cutting costs usually starts with letting workers go, and the best gauge for the unemployment rate may be the spread between the 10-year and 2-Year Treasury yield spread. In recent times the spread between the 10-year and 2-year yield tends to rise just before the unemployment rate starts to increase as the market anticipates the eventual rate-cutting cycle the Fed is about to embark on.</p><p>The current inversion is the deepest it has been since the early 1980s, and it tells us that unemployment is likely to stay low for some time longer. The current yield curve inversion has even stopped falling yet.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0e496080213d87b9baac15b6fab3f9aa\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"258\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>But the yield curve inversion that has started to turn higher is the 10-year minus 2-year 18-month forward curve. This forward curve tends to lead the 10-2 year nominal curve by 6 to 12 months, and currently, that forward curve has returned to a neutral level near 0% as the nominal 10-2 yield curve is trading well below the forward curve.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1859642fc4382c863b8d13598ed0c511\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"351\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>The forward curve suggests that the unemployment rate may be significantly higher over the next six months as companies look to shed the rising cost of wages as the economy slows. Instead of pushing back against the recent easing of financial conditions, Powell made the same comments as he did at the November FOMC meeting and even stressed caution on overtightening. This market has come to a point where anything that is not more hawkish than expected is dovish, leading to a big pop in the S&P 500 following Powell's appearance. While Powell said almost nothing new, he didn't say enough to cause the market's recent easing of financial conditions to reverse. It was shocking to hear because at every point before November 30, when financial conditions had eased too much, Powell would push back against the market. But this time, he didn't, and by not pushing back, he is telling the market he is okay with the recent easing of financial conditions. The real question is why Powell would be okay with financial conditions easing. It is the exact opposite of what he has been saying about his desire to raise rates into restrictive territory.BloombergWhat is even stranger than that is that the jobs data on Friday showed stronger-than-expected non-farm payroll numbers. But, wages rose by 0.6% month-over-month, the hottest reading since January 2022. They also increased by 5.1% year-over-year, while last month's numbers were all revised higher.Meanwhile, the ISM manufacturing data was weaker than expected, suggesting the US economy is inching closer to recession. The ISM report noted that the reading of 49 indicated that the REAL GDP growth in the fourth quarter was around 0.1%.The move in the ISM report indicates that S&P 500 earnings growth could turn lower in 2023 and perhaps go negative. The relationship between the ISM manufacturing survey goes back a long time, and they, too, tend to track each other very well.BloombergThe slowing growth and higher wages suggest the recent changes in attitude from the bond market. The data suggest the economy could be very close to or is in a recession, which is likely to squeeze margins for companies and earnings. Earnings estimates do not reflect margin compression and are still pricing a lot of margin expansion.Analysts' estimates suggest that earnings in 2023 are expected to grow by around 7%, while sales are expected to rise by about 3%. Currently, analysts' estimates are pricing in margin expansion in 2023. For there to be margin expansion, costs will need to be reduced; otherwise, earnings estimates are too high and need to be slashed.BloombergCutting costs usually starts with letting workers go, and the best gauge for the unemployment rate may be the spread between the 10-year and 2-Year Treasury yield spread. In recent times the spread between the 10-year and 2-year yield tends to rise just before the unemployment rate starts to increase as the market anticipates the eventual rate-cutting cycle the Fed is about to embark on.The current inversion is the deepest it has been since the early 1980s, and it tells us that unemployment is likely to stay low for some time longer. The current yield curve inversion has even stopped falling yet.BloombergBut the yield curve inversion that has started to turn higher is the 10-year minus 2-year 18-month forward curve. This forward curve tends to lead the 10-2 year nominal curve by 6 to 12 months, and currently, that forward curve has returned to a neutral level near 0% as the nominal 10-2 yield curve is trading well below the forward curve.BloombergThe forward curve suggests that the unemployment rate may be significantly higher over the next six months as companies look to shed the rising cost of wages as the economy slows. The data from Quant-Insight shows that the biggest drive in the recent move lower in the 10-year rate is risk aversion. An indication that the market is getting much more cautious and shifting into a risk-off regime.Quant-InsightShould the dollar continue to weaken and rates continue to fall, it would suggest that risk-off is taking hold. It's also one of the oldest, with a lot of traditional ideas about how to operate and how to make money. Financial technology companies like SoFi Technologies are trying to do things differently and, as a result, are nipping at the heels of traditional banks. But trying to change how banking is done hasn't been without its difficulties for this company since SoFi went public in June 2021. Share prices are down about 82% from their high point in early 2021 and now trade near all-time lows. What has the market so down on this stock in 2022? And more importantly, can it regain the market's confidence going forward? Here is why SoFi's stock could shine like a diamond in 2023.SoFi investors showing lots of uncertainty right nowSoFi is a digital bank, which means it doesn't have physical branches. Most members access SoFi using smartphones to access its Super App which provides the services SoFi offers. Those services include checking and savings banking, peer-to-peer payments, investing, and various loans like mortgages, student loans, and more.SoFi was awarded a coveted banking charter earlier this year, but that was followed by some bad luck (especially recently). Its student loan business has effectively been frozen because the U.S. government told loan recipients at the start of the pandemic that repayment requirements were frozen and the government has yet to unfreeze the payment requirements. The freeze was supposed to end at the start of 2023, but President Joe Biden recently extended the freeze until the end of June 2023 after a federal court blocked his attempt to forgive up to $20,000 in debt among qualified borrowers. Biden is waiting for the case to be settled before ending the freeze. The loans don't accumulate interest during the freeze, so borrowers are not incentivized to refinance them until payments resume. SoFi can't do much to monetize student loans until the freeze lifts. The cryptocurrency industry is also going through turmoil due to the collapse of FTX, one of the major exchanges. Following FTX's collapse, some United States senators called for greater scrutiny of banks that have crypto trading segments. When SoFi got its bank charter, the Federal Reserve pointed out that some of the activities conducted by its crypto brokerage, SoFi Digital Assets, were impermissible for banks. SoFi was given two years to divest itself of the division or else get in compliance with the law. During that conformance period, SoFi was not supposed to expand its crypto offerings. The senators raised concerns because it seems SoFi expanded its crypto offerings by allowing customers to invest part of their direct deposits into crypto with no fees. SoFi also greatly expanded the number of cryptocurrencies it offers.Crypto is a tiny part of SoFi's overall business; the fair value of all digital assets held for customers is just $132 million. Still, the idea of increased regulatory scrutiny isn't ideal. The business keeps delivering where it countsInvestors should not disregard the headwinds SoFi faces, but they should also note the company's stellar performance it still manages to generate. SoFi is still consistently adding members over the past few years. Memberships increased 61% year over year in the third quarter of 2022 and now surpass 4.74 million.Image source: SoFi Technologies.Much of SoFi's growth comes at the expense of existing banks. Growth has slowed slightly as the base numbers get larger, but it's clear that SoFi maintains strong momentum, and investors should follow this moving forward. The company's increasing profitability is another big positive for investors. SoFi generated a positive non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $30 million in 2021 and is guiding for between $115 million and $120 million in 2022. Getting the banking charter was a big help here; it allows SoFi to perform core banking functions like holding its deposits and loans instead of relying on a partner bank and giving them a cut. Investors should look for EBITDA to keep growing as members and revenue increase.Bright future, cheap stockStudent loan payments should eventually resume, which will help SoFi. Cross-selling on SoFi's app could help lift revenue over time; the average member currently uses fewer than two products, so there's plenty of room to expand that, given all the Super App offers.Meanwhile, SoFi's potential crypto investigation bears watching and is likely a big contributor to the stock price's fall this year. If SoFi can't get a handle on the situation and resolve it, the potential regulatory damage it could cause to SoFi's banking charter would be a big reason to revisit the investment thesis for this stock.Still, the stock's brutal decline over crypto sort of flies in the face of the positive news and the real potential for the stock. While discouraging for investors, it seems Wall Street could be missing the mark here. At a price-to-book ratio lower than traditional banks like Bank of America, the stock appears beaten down into the gutter here:SOFI Price to Book Value data by YCharts.Given the immense growth potential that it has over the long term, SoFi seems like a favorable risk-versus-reward stock idea where the upside favors the long-term investor. The business must keep executing and stay out of regulatory crosshairs, but the stock does have the ingredients for a breakout in 2023.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SOFI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2503,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9966715339,"gmtCreate":1669644077921,"gmtModify":1676538217746,"author":{"id":"4098247155361590","authorId":"4098247155361590","name":"Yann Chan","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3d212c8089345f254961e67aa29d2b41","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4098247155361590","idStr":"4098247155361590"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9966715339","repostId":"1179608810","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3055,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9985499363,"gmtCreate":1667436112752,"gmtModify":1676537917196,"author":{"id":"4098247155361590","authorId":"4098247155361590","name":"Yann Chan","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3d212c8089345f254961e67aa29d2b41","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4098247155361590","idStr":"4098247155361590"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9985499363","repostId":"1145031938","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1145031938","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1667433067,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1145031938?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-11-03 07:51","market":"us","language":"en","title":"After-Hours Movers: Roku Slammed on Lower Outook, eBay Gains on Beat","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1145031938","media":"Investing.com","summary":"Tandem Diabetes (NASDAQ:TNDM) 23% LOWER; reported Q3 EPS of ($0.76), which may not compare to the an","content":"<html><head></head><body><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/05c22786ba94e1b1440c2b1b06714c35\" tg-width=\"800\" tg-height=\"533\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Tandem Diabetes (NASDAQ:TNDM) 23% LOWER; reported Q3 EPS of ($0.76), which may not compare to the analyst estimate of ($0.05).Revenue for the quartercame in at $204.55 million versus the consensus estimate of $207.56 million.
