These 3 Indicators Tell You Whether Risk-On Is Real
You can use these 3 market indicators to figure out if $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ believes Donald Trumps lies or not:
1. Brent crude oil prices
2. 10 year treasury yields
3. US dollar
Here's how to read each one:
1/ BRENT CRUDE
The cleanest tell. Iran risk lives in oil first.
Believes it → Brent sells off. The war premium bleeds out and traders start pricing Iranian barrels coming back onto the market.
Doesn't believe it → Brent holds bid. ~20% of the world's seaborne oil moves through Hormuz. Nobody sells that risk on a headline.
2/ 10 YEAR YIELDS
This one is two-sided, and that's where people get it wrong.
Yields can RISE on peace (safe haven bid unwinds, growth outlook improves) or FALL on peace (lower oil = lower inflation).
So don't trade the nominal. Split it:
Believes it → breakevens drop, real yields firm. Market is pricing less inflation risk and more growth. That's the healthy version.
Doesn't believe it → breakevens sticky while nominals fall. That's not a peace trade, that's a growth scare wearing a peace costume.
3/ US DOLLAR
The dollar is the fear bid. When the world gets scary, cash comes home.
Believes it → DXY softens. Haven demand unwinds and oil-importer currencies ($JPY, $KRW, $EUR) catch a bid because their energy bill just got cheaper.
Doesn't believe it → dollar stays firm even as headlines get friendlier. That's positioning telling you it doesn't trust the tape.
THE SCORECARD
All 3 confirm (oil down, breakevens down, dollar down) →

believes it. Risk on is real.
Oil down but dollar up → that's not peace, that's demand destruction. Fade the rally.
Nothing moves → the market has already seen this movie. Headline priced, no new information.
