Why Lumentum’s 109% Growth Shows That AI Networks Need More Than Chips

$Lumentum(LITE)$’s fiscal fourth-quarter results demonstrated that the artificial-intelligence infrastructure boom is extending beyond processors into the optical equipment that moves data between servers. Revenue more than doubled and management issued another forecast above market expectations, but a sixfold share-price increase over the preceding year leaves very little room for execution mistakes.

Lumentum reported after the August 11 market close for the quarter ended June 27. Revenue increased 109% year over year to $1.01 billion, while adjusted earnings rose to $3.23 per share from $0.88. Both exceeded analysts’ expectations. Adjusted operating margin expanded to 36.6%, showing that higher volume and a richer product mix are producing substantial operating leverage. Lumentum’s official fiscal fourth-quarter release provides the results, while the company’s quarterly-results page links the presentation and filings.

The bullish thesis is that AI clusters require enormous communication bandwidth. Accelerators must exchange data with memory, storage and other processors quickly enough to avoid leaving expensive computing capacity idle. Lumentum supplies optical transceivers and high-power lasers used in those connections. Demand is also moving toward near-packaged and eventually co-packaged optics, placing optical components closer to the computing silicon as electrical connections encounter power and distance limits.

Management forecast fiscal first-quarter revenue near $1.25 billion and adjusted earnings of $4.05–$4.35 per share, both above the market estimates available before the report. This implies that the fourth-quarter acceleration was not merely an order-timing event.

The bearish case is valuation and customer concentration. Lumentum closed August 11 at $820.59—about 148 times trailing earnings—after gaining roughly 586% over the preceding year. AI customers can alter deployment timing, use multiple component suppliers or redesign their networking architecture. Supply expansion by competitors can also pressure prices once shortages ease. Trade restrictions on Chinese optical suppliers may benefit Lumentum, but relying on policy protection would make the outlook less durable.

The stock ranged from $781.65 to $848.77 during regular trading and was little changed after hours despite the beat.

LITE Daily Chart

LITE’s daily chart remains technically fragile after two recent failed breakout attempts, first above the developing double-bottom neckline around the mid-$850s and then above the longer-term descending trendline near roughly $880–$900.

Those failures suggest sellers are still defending overhead resistance and that the recent rebound has not yet established a durable trend reversal. Price is now back near $820, with immediate support around $800–$810 and deeper support around $700–$720; a decisive break below $800 would increase the risk of another move toward the lower base, while a daily close back above approximately $855–$870, followed by a successful retest, would materially improve the structure.

Given the repeated false breakouts, I would avoid buying naked calls here and instead favor a 45–60 DTE bear call spread, such as selling the $900 call and buying the $950 call, provided the credit is attractive, so the trade benefits if LITE remains below the failed-breakout area or drifts sideways. The bearish thesis would weaken if price closes decisively above roughly $900, especially if that breakout is accompanied by stronger volume.

As of writing, however, LITE is showing some renewed strength, trading around $860 in the overnight market, which brings price back toward the key breakout area and warrants close monitoring for confirmation.

The operating evidence leans bullish, but the stock outlook is neutral to moderately bullish because valuation already reflects extraordinary growth. The view would be invalidated by optical demand slowing sharply, gross or operating margin reversing, major customers delaying deployments or first-quarter revenue falling below guidance.
