META: Who Gets Paid When AI Shops For You?

The interesting part of Muse isn’t the chatbot.

It’s the checkout.

$Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$  says Muse can increasingly act on a user’s behalf — finding products, making bookings and completing transactions. The company plans to take a small fee from transactions, creating a completely different monetisation model from traditional advertising.

And that creates a new fight over the customer relationship.

🛒 Retail: Shopify has opened its merchants to Muse through Shop Pay, while Instacart is bringing its grocery infrastructure into the experience.

✈️ Travel: Expedia is coming to Muse, meaning travel could become another area where the agent sits between the customer and the booking platform.

🚫 $Amazon.com(AMZN)$  : has taken the opposite approach and asked Meta to remove it from the Muse shopping experience.

That may be the bigger story.

If consumers increasingly say “Muse, find me the cheapest option and buy it”, the starting point of commerce moves away from individual apps and toward the AI agent.

That could change who owns the customer, who gets the transaction economics — and who gets squeezed out of the journey.

The real question for investors:

Does Muse become another distribution channel for retailers, or does it become the new front door to the internet?
