A Chip Rally and a Memory Rout on the Same Day. What Split Them?
The indices: barely moved, but chips and memory went in opposite directions
The three indices were nearly flat on Tuesday: the $S&P 500(.SPX)$ fell 0.02 per cent to 7,805.45; the $NASDAQ(.IXIC)$ fell 0.15 per cent to 27,204.38; and the $Dow Jones(.DJI)$ fell 0.35 per cent to 51,670.10. The 10-year Treasury yield eased from 5.24 per cent to 5.22 per cent.
The compute chips that had been falling since last Thursday bounced: $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ rose 0.97 per cent to US$228.52 and AMD rose 1.90 per cent to US$605.53, with the specific AMD driver in the next section. Memory kept going lower, with Micron and SKHY down for a second straight session. On the same AI chain, the two halves are answering different questions: the chip side is waiting on cloud capital spending guidance — guidance is a forward-looking direction, not a signed contract, and it allocates no share to any supplier — while the memory side still carries a supply-side event. The thing to watch is capital spending guidance in this week's technology results.
Memory: CXMT unveiled a 4F² architecture, and Korean memory stocks hit circuit breakers intraday
$Micron Technology(MU)$ fell 3.62 per cent to US$953.19 and $SK hynix(SKHY)$ fell 3.19 per cent to US$157.06, a second straight session of declines. Monday's selling was triggered by Chinese memory maker CXMT — Tuesday brought the specific detail: at an industry conference in Shanghai on 9–10 October, CXMT announced a DRAM cell architecture called "4F²", built around a proprietary Vertical Surrounding Gate (VSG) transistor, and said it plans to ship a server DDR5 RDIMM product by the end of 2026. CXMT held a 9.5 per cent share of global DRAM revenue in Q2 2026, placing it fourth worldwide.
The announcement gave no verifiable production volume or yield figures, but the Korean market's response was unambiguous: SK Hynix fell more than 10 per cent intraday, Samsung fell more than 7 per cent intraday, and the KOSPI triggered a circuit breaker. CXMT's threat is aimed at commodity DRAM, not HBM — HBM remains central to Nvidia's AI chips and is not within the scope of Tuesday's concern. Two paths follow. Should CXMT's new architecture fall short on yields when it reaches mass production, the recent falls are an overreaction to a technical announcement. Should the DDR5 product ship on schedule by end-2026, commodity DRAM pricing has to be reworked. The thing to watch is CXMT's DDR5 shipment progress at year-end.
Bank results: all four large banks closed lower, each for a different reason
$JPMorgan Chase(JPM)$ reported first: revenue of US$50.17 billion, with both earnings per share and revenue below consensus, and fixed-income trading below estimates; shares closed down 0.86 per cent at US$331.43. Chief executive Jamie Dimon said forces are shifting under the surface of the economy. Citigroup beat estimates but closed down 5.60 per cent at US$124.53 — the largest fall of the large-bank group; a beat followed by a sell-off typically means the market did not buy the guidance. Bank of America received a US$1.2 billion fine from the Treasury Department for money laundering and sanctions violations and closed down 1.14 per cent at US$53.96. Wells Fargo's net interest income missed estimates; shares closed down 3.10 per cent at US$80.74.
This week is the most concentrated stretch of large-bank reporting in the Q3 season, and all four fell — but on different grounds: trading at JPMorgan, guidance disappointment at Citigroup, a regulatory penalty at Bank of America, and interest income at Wells Fargo. Two paths follow. Should remaining bank results show net interest income holding up, this week's broad decline reads more as a pile-up of individual cases. Should multiple banks come in short on interest income, rates staying elevated for this long are starting to compress net interest margins. The thing to watch is net interest income across the rest of this week's bank results.
AMD and Meta: application-layer names up two days running, AMD with a specific new driver
$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ rose 1.90 per cent to US$605.53 on a specific development: AI inference company Fermi surged 14 per cent on AMD's credit support for "Project Matador" — that converts AMD's chips from "potential competitor" to "the one someone is actually using to build an inference cluster." Meta rose 2.63 per cent to US$762.50, touching an intraday high of US$771.27, leading large caps for a second consecutive session.
On the compute infrastructure side, Nvidia and AMD moved in the same direction but on different logic: Nvidia's move tracked large-customer capital spending expectations; AMD's move tracked a specific inference customer making a concrete bet today. Meta represents the application layer — two days of money moving here says the market is pricing where AI monetises first. Two paths follow. Should AMD's next inference order data and Meta's next AI product figures both deliver on what these two sessions priced, the split between application layer and infrastructure is a trend. Should monetisation still be ahead of the evidence, the rallying and the falling are waiting on the same number. The thing to watch is AMD inference orders and Meta's AI product engagement and revenue in the next results.
SpaceX: about US$40 billion more in debt planned, and bond investors grow wary of borrowing to buy chips
$SpaceX(SPCX)$ fell 4.21 per cent to US$156.54 on Tuesday. The trigger was a report that the company plans to raise about US$40 billion in new debt — it had already issued US$25 billion in senior unsecured notes in June this year. The money flows from bond buyers to SpaceX; any chips purchased sit on SpaceX's balance sheet. Unsecured means no specific asset stands behind the notes: if the company cannot pay, those creditors queue as ordinary claims and absorb the loss themselves, which is why the coupon has to be higher than on secured debt. Part of the stated purpose points at buying Nvidia chips, and bond investors have grown wary.
Two paths follow. Should the debt price and place smoothly at no higher a rate than last time, the bond market still has appetite for AI-linked borrowing. Should the deal stall or price wider, the company expanding compute on leverage has to face its funding cost first. The thing to watch is the terms and pricing of this debt.
This is personal analysis and not investment advice.
💬 【Talking Point】
Citigroup beat estimates on Tuesday and still sold off more than 5 per cent. Jamie Dimon said forces are shifting under the surface of the economy. What does a bank sell-off on a beat actually tell you — is the market reading something the headline number does not carry?

The same applies to AI stocks. I am watching whether AI infrastructure spending translates into sustainable earnings growth, while $Cxmt Corporation(688825)$ ’s progress adds uncertainty to the memory sector. One technical announcement is not enough to overturn the long-term memory supercycle thesis, but competition and pricing pressure cannot be ignored.
My approach is to stay patient and avoid emotional reactions to daily moves. I prefer to track earnings and business fundamentals. Pullbacks can create opportunities, but I would rather wait for stronger evidence than rush in simply because prices have fallen.
