is mixed, but the immediate tone has turned mildly bearish : resilient economic data supports corporate demand, while inflation and a technology-led risk-off move are pressuring the index.

Bullish developments

Consumer demand remains firm: September retail sales rose 0.8% month-on-month , ahead of the 0.3% consensus . Initial jobless claims were 199,000 , slightly below the 200,000 consensus . This combination supports the “growth without an abrupt labour-market break” narrative.

Manufacturing indicators were strong: The October Empire State index was 25.5 versus 10.25 expected ; the Philadelphia Fed index was also positive at 20.9 . That is constructive for cyclicals and broad earnings resilience.

AI investment backdrop remains intact: TSMC reported Q3 net profit of TWD 763.1bn , above the TWD 739.5bn estimate, a supportive read-through for the semiconductor-capex cycle.

Bearish developments

Inflation re-accelerated: September CPI was 3.7% year-on-year , above the 3.6% consensus , while CPI rose 0.6% month-on-month . Core CPI increased 0.3% month-on-month , above the 0.2% expectation . This raises the risk that rates stay restrictive for longer.

Rate expectations are becoming less supportive: Market commentary has shifted toward a meaningful chance of another Fed hike, while one major-bank forecast now calls for further tightening into 2027. Higher discount rates are especially problematic for long-duration growth and AI-linked stocks.

Technology selling is broadening: On 2026-10-16, the Nasdaq fell 2.14% and the S&P 500 fell 1.09% , with weakness in major semiconductor names including Micron, Nvidia, AMD and Intel. Since mega-cap tech has an outsized index weight, this is directly negative for SPY.

Risk appetite looks more defensive: Gold remained above US$4,000/oz while the dollar index moved above 102, signalling investors are not treating the recent growth data as unambiguously risk-positive.

Market confirmation

SPY closed at US$763.25 on 2026-10-17, down 1.11% , with 64.38m shares traded and a 1.94 volume ratio —selling activity was elevated.

It has fallen from an October high of US$781.62 on 2026-10-06. The current quoted support is US$759.36 and resistance is US$775.42 . A sustained break below support would reinforce the near-term risk-off message; recovery above resistance would suggest the inflation/rates concern is being absorbed.

Empire and Philly still say the economy is holding up. For SPY, 759.36 matters more than the macro debate right here
