Buying the Dip? Lessons from My TTD Wipeout, Before I Look at Tesla

I'll be real: TTD cost me a lot more than a few kopi runs and chicken rice. Great company, great story, so I bought the dip, then bought the next one. Then earnings came and it dropped 30%+ in a single day. The business wasn't broken. I paid a "must be perfect" price for a company that only had to miss once. Lesson one: a great company is not the same as a great entry price.

Now Tesla has just shown a Roadster that flies on cold-gas thrusters, jumping over cars and doing a barrel roll. Production is promised for 2028, flying on public roads isn't permitted, and Roadster dates have slipped since 2017. Here in Singapore, where a COE alone can cost more than a car overseas, nobody is flying anywhere soon. 😄

So I'm not buying the demo. Here's the contrast:

TTD: One engine, one narrative. When growth slowed, nothing cushioned the fall.

Tesla: Cars, energy storage, robotics and a halo product that keeps the world watching. The flying Roadster is a signal, not my thesis. AI and robotics are the future.

What I'm doing differently this time:

Stagger my buys across weeks instead of going all-in on one dip.

Size it so I can still sleep. Tesla is volatile too.

Write my exit rule before I tap "Buy" on Tiger.

Use only money I won't need for important life expenses.

I'm not calling the bottom. I'm buying a company with several engines, at a size where being wrong teaches me instead of wrecking me.

TTD pain was as much multiple compression as story break. Tesla has more engines, but if AI slips, that volatility can get uglier than people think

Roadster is pure flex, not the thesis. The real moat is AI and robotics, otherwise 2028 promises are just another glossy demo lol
