Futures Positioning Watch: US Index Shorts Retreat as Oil Bsulls Rush for the Exit

What Is CFTC Data, Why Does It Matter, and What Should Investors Watch?

The Commitments of Traders (COT) report, published weekly by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), is a key gauge of fund flows in global futures markets. Its main value lies in revealing who is driving prices. Market movements ultimately reflect competition among different types of capital, and CFTC data allow these participants to be analyzed separately.

The analysis follows three main steps:

  1. Identify the dominant capital.

For commodity futures such as WTI crude oil, gold and silver, the focus is on Managed Money net positions, which gauge the directional bias of speculative capital. Producer positions reveal commercial hedging pressure and help assess positioning structure and market crowding.

For financial futures such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, the focus is on changes in Leveraged Funds positions, while Asset Manager positions provide a reference for longer term capital.

  2. Determine the direction of flows and what drives the change.

Net positioning equals long positions minus short positions. Spreading positions are excluded from directional net exposure. Investors should look beyond whether positioning is net long or net short and determine whether the change comes from new longs, short covering, long liquidation or new shorts. Weekly changes and historical ranges also help identify crowded positioning.

  3. Assess whether positioning confirms the price trend.

When prices rise alongside an increase in speculative net longs, the trend has clear funding support. If prices continue to rise while net longs decline, a positioning divergence may be emerging. This signals weaker momentum without implying an immediate reversal.

The data used in this analysis are as follows:

  • Analysis date: October 21, 2026, Beijing time.

  • Positioning date: October 13, 2026, at the US market close. COT reports measure positions at each Tuesday’s close, so all positioning data in this article correspond to that point.

  • Release date: October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. ET, equivalent to October 17 at 3:30 a.m. Beijing time.

Weekly Overview of Major Positioning Changes

As of October 13, 2026, equity index positioning improved marginally, while speculative bullish exposure across commodities generally weakened. Equity indexes use Leveraged Funds data, while commodities use Managed Money data:

  • S&P 500: Net shorts narrowed by 1.53%. Additional long positions drove the improvement, although short exposure remained elevated.

  • Nasdaq 100: Net shorts narrowed by 39.66%, mainly due to short covering. Long positions did not expand at the same time.

  • WTI crude oil: Net longs fell by 24.30%. Long liquidation and new short positions both contributed, indicating much weaker bullish conviction.

  • Gold: Net longs declined by 3.51%. Longs remained dominant, although bullish sentiment continued to cool.

  • Silver: Net longs fell by 25.36%, mainly due to additional short positions. The long positioning advantage narrowed further.

S&P 500: Additional Longs Narrow Net Shorts Slightly as Elevated Short Exposure Persists

As of October 13, 2026, Leveraged Funds held a net short position of 408,726 contracts in S&P 500 E-mini futures. Shorts accounted for 27.4% of open interest, well above the 6.3% share held by longs, indicating that leveraged investors maintained substantial short exposure. Net shorts narrowed by 6,361 contracts over the latest week. The change came from an increase of 8,181 long contracts, which exceeded the addition of 1,820 short contracts. Short covering played little role. This indicates a marginal improvement in sentiment, although defensive positioning remains largely intact. Given the continued expansion in net shorts since late September, leveraged funds remain cautious toward equity indexes. Some short positions may reflect basis trades or portfolio hedges, so they do not necessarily represent outright bearish views.

Looking further at medium to long term allocation capital, Asset Managers still held 915,835 net long contracts as of October 13. Long positions accounted for 57.5% of open interest, indicating that institutional investors maintained stable core exposure to US equities. Net longs increased by 9,220 contracts over the latest week, driven by a modest rise in longs and a decline in shorts. This provided a more supportive signal than Leveraged Funds positioning. However, net longs remained below the mid July level of 940,472 contracts, indicating that institutions have yet to begin large scale accumulation.

Taken together, the two positioning categories show that Asset Managers continue to hold substantial net long exposure, indicating sustained support from medium to long term allocation demand. Leveraged Funds still hold elevated net short positions, reflecting caution among short term investors, although some exposure may relate to hedging and basis trades. During the latest week, Asset Manager net longs increased while Leveraged Fund net shorts narrowed, producing a marginal improvement in the overall structure. However, the scale of the recovery remained limited. A clearer recovery in risk appetite would require continued buying by Asset Managers, a further decline in Leveraged Fund net shorts and confirmation from a stronger equity index.

Nasdaq 100: Short Covering Moves Positioning Toward Balance, While Long Reductions Limit the Bullish Signal

As of October 13, 2026, Leveraged Funds held 11,593 net short contracts in Nasdaq 100 E-mini futures. Long and short positions accounted for 17.2% and 21.4% of open interest, respectively, leaving overall positioning close to balance. Net shorts narrowed by 7,619 contracts over the latest week. Shorts fell by 10,862 contracts, while longs also declined by 3,243 contracts. This suggests that investors are unwinding previous defensive shorts, with little evidence of new bullish exposure. Leveraged Fund net shorts have declined steadily from their elevated levels in July and August, indicating that bearish trades against technology stocks have cooled significantly. However, until long positions begin to expand, the improvement should be viewed mainly as short covering and does not confirm a broad recovery in risk appetite.

Over the same period, Asset Managers held 75,323 net long contracts. Long positions accounted for 40.3% of open interest, indicating that medium to long term institutional investors maintained stable exposure to the Nasdaq 100. Net longs increased by 1,525 contracts over the latest week, driven by a modest rise in longs and a decline in shorts. This produced a mild improvement in the positioning structure. However, net longs have remained broadly range bound since July, with no sustained or significant accumulation trend.

Taken together, Leveraged Funds are reducing part of their short exposure while Asset Managers continue to maintain substantial net long positions. This indicates that previous downside hedging pressure is easing and the positioning structure is moving closer to balance. The latest change mainly reflects the release of short side risk while long term allocations remain stable, with little evidence of aggressive buying by new capital. A clearer recovery in risk appetite would require Leveraged Funds to move from net short to net long while Asset Managers continue to add exposure.

WTI Crude Oil: Funds Cut Longs and Add Shorts as Producer Net Longs Rise, Widening the Divide Between Speculation and Hedging

As of October 13, 2026, Managed Money held 40,574 net long WTI crude oil contracts, down 13,024 over the latest week. The decline was driven by both long liquidation and new short positions, showing that investors were reducing bullish exposure while increasing bearish bets. Net longs have fallen steadily from their early September peak, significantly narrowing the long positioning advantage and indicating weaker speculative conviction. The position nevertheless remains net long, so the overall structure has yet to turn bearish.

The Producer, Merchant, Processor and User category held 353,143 net long contracts over the same period, an increase of 18,133 from the previous week. Both long and short positions increased, although the larger rise in longs expanded net exposure. Commercial net longs have recovered gradually since late September, diverging from the adjustment in Managed Money positioning. However, this category includes producers, merchants, processors and users whose positions reflect procurement, sales and inventory hedging needs. An increase in net longs therefore does not directly indicate stronger spot demand or a uniformly bullish industry outlook.

Taken together, Managed Money continues to reduce net long exposure while commercial participants expand their net longs, showing that directional trading sentiment and industry hedging demand are moving out of sync. Fund flow support for higher oil prices has weakened, while the recovery in commercial net longs remains insufficient to confirm stronger bullish sentiment. A more credible recovery would require Managed Money to resume adding longs while the pace of new short positions slows.

Gold: Managed Money Longs and Producer Shorts Decline Together as Bullish Trades Cool and Hedging Exposure Contracts

As of October 13, 2026, Managed Money held 107,089 net long gold contracts, down 3,898 over the latest week. The decline was driven by long liquidation and additional short positions, indicating a continued loss of bullish momentum. Net longs have fallen steadily from their late August peak, mainly due to lower long exposure. This suggests that previous bullish positions are being unwound. However, longs still significantly exceed shorts, so the current adjustment reflects cooling bullish sentiment rather than a short dominated positioning structure.

Commercial participants held 18,437 net short contracts over the same period, narrowing their net short exposure by 1,064 contracts from the previous week. The improvement resulted from a larger reduction in shorts than in longs, indicating that commercial participants reduced part of their short exposure without adding long positions. Net shorts have narrowed gradually since late August, mainly due to declining short positions. Given the hedging role of commercial participants, this change primarily reflects lower short hedging exposure and provides little evidence of stronger active bullish demand.

Taken together, Managed Money net longs declined while commercial net shorts also narrowed, indicating that both groups reduced their existing directional exposure. The Managed Money adjustment reflects cooling bullish trades, while lower commercial shorts reflect changes in hedging positions. These shifts should not be combined into a single bullish signal. There is still little evidence of sustained long accumulation. A clearer recovery in bullish sentiment would require Managed Money net longs to rise, primarily through new long positions.

Silver: New Shorts Drive a Sharp Contraction in Fund Net Longs, While Added Longs Narrow Commercial Net Shorts

As of October 13, 2026, Managed Money held 5,619 net long silver contracts, down 1,909 over the latest week. The decline was driven mainly by new short positions, while long liquidation further reduced net exposure. This indicates an increase in bearish positioning. Net longs fell sharply in late September and continued to decline in October, reflecting a sustained loss of bullish conviction among speculative investors. The position remains net long, although the long advantage has narrowed significantly and fund flow support for higher silver prices has weakened.

Commercial participants held 15,801 net short contracts over the same period, narrowing their net short exposure by 452 contracts. The improvement resulted from a larger increase in longs than in shorts. Net shorts have declined gradually since late September, although commercial positioning remains clearly net short. Short positions did not decrease during the latest week, showing that the improvement mainly reflected additional long exposure rather than concentrated short covering. Given the hedging role of commercial participants, this change should be assessed alongside procurement, sales and inventory management needs and does not directly indicate stronger bullish industry sentiment.

Taken together, Managed Money net longs continued to decline while commercial net shorts narrowed modestly, reflecting the difference between directional trading and industry hedging demand. The increase in Managed Money shorts points to weaker near term sentiment, while the decline in commercial net shorts remains insufficient to confirm a recovery in bullish conviction. A clearer improvement would require Managed Money to resume adding longs while the pace of short accumulation slows.

What to Watch Next in Positioning

The latest data show that positioning analysis depends on identifying the source of each change, rather than relying solely on net positions. An increase in open interest does not necessarily represent directional inflows. A rise in net longs or a decline in net shorts must also be separated into new long positions and short covering. The narrowing of Nasdaq 100 net shorts came mainly from short covering, while the S&P 500 improvement reflected a larger increase in longs than in shorts. These changes represent different investor behavior. A more accurate assessment of funding support requires consideration of each participant’s allocation, speculative and hedging needs, alongside confirmation between positioning and price trends.
