Stock Pair of the Day: TSMC vs Micron – Which Semiconductor Stock Has More Upside?

Big Tech earnings have failed to give semiconductor stocks the boost many investors expected. Despite continued AI investment, chip shares remain under pressure as the market questions whether current spending levels can translate into sustainable earnings growth.

Two companies worth watching are Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) and Micron Technology (MU). Both have delivered strong results, but their businesses offer different ways to participate in the AI boom.

1. TSMC (TSM): The Manufacturing Backbone

TSMC is one of the most important companies in the global semiconductor industry. It manufactures advanced chips designed by companies such as Nvidia and AMD.

Its latest third-quarter results showed revenue growth of 41.2% year over year, while earnings per ADR increased 57.5%. Strong demand for advanced chips, particularly from AI and high-performance computing customers, remains a major growth driver.

TSMC’s advantage is its manufacturing expertise and position in advanced semiconductor production. As AI chips become more sophisticated, demand for advanced manufacturing capacity could remain strong.

However, investors should watch rising production costs, overseas factory expansion and the impact of moving to more advanced manufacturing processes on profit margins.

2. Micron (MU): The AI Memory Opportunity

Micron offers a different opportunity. AI data centres need more than powerful processors; they also require substantial amounts of high-performance memory.

Micron is benefiting from demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which helps AI accelerators process large amounts of data efficiently.

Its latest fiscal fourth-quarter results showed revenue of $54.23 billion, up sharply year over year, supported by strong demand for memory products. Its outlook also points to continued growth.

The opportunity is attractive, but memory is a cyclical business. Pricing and profitability can change quickly if supply increases or demand slows. Investors need to consider whether today’s exceptional earnings can be sustained.

Which One Has the Better Investment Case?

TSMC offers exposure to the manufacturing infrastructure behind the AI industry. Its competitive position and broader advanced-chip exposure may provide more predictable long-term growth.

Micron offers potentially greater earnings sensitivity to the AI memory boom, but its results are more exposed to memory pricing cycles.

For me, TSMC has the stronger case for investors prioritising business quality and earnings visibility. Micron is worth watching for those willing to accept greater cyclicality in exchange for exposure to the memory opportunity.

The recent pullback in semiconductor stocks does not automatically make either company cheap. Valuation, future guidance and cash generation still matter.

What could change the outlook? Nvidia’s November earnings, Micron’s December results and further updates on hyperscaler capital expenditure could provide important signals about whether AI chip demand is strong enough to support another semiconductor rally.
