GOOGLE ZERO: How AI Search Could Change the Internet Forever
When Google Stops Sending Traffic
Google Zero
For decades, Google has been the internet's most powerful gateway. For publishers, forums, content creators, and businesses, ranking in Google Search meant attracting visitors, building audiences, and generating revenue.
That relationship is now changing.
As Google increasingly relies on AI Overviews and AI Mode to answer questions directly within Search, users have fewer reasons to click through to external websites. The result is a potentially significant decline in search-driven traffic, a phenomenon increasingly referred to as "Google Zero."
And Reddit's latest earnings report may offer one of the clearest early signs of what that future could look like.
Reddit Provides a Warning Signal
During its latest quarter, $Reddit(RDDT)$ reported a meaningful decline in search referral traffic as Google's AI-powered search experience altered user behavior.
CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman summarized the situation bluntly:
"People still want Reddit. It's just that Google is not sending them to Reddit the way they used to."
According to Huffman, Google continues to crawl and index Reddit's content, but that no longer translates into the same volume of visitors. He was particularly critical of Google's AI Mode, arguing that it generates little meaningful traffic for Reddit and likely for many other websites as well.
Investors reacted swiftly. Reddit shares plunged more than 29% in a single session, closing at $91.73, as concerns grew that the platform may be entering a structural decline in organic traffic from Google.

Google's AI Push May Threaten Its Own Engine
The implications extend far beyond Reddit.
As Google accelerates its transition toward AI-powered search, investors are increasingly questioning the long-term economics of the company's core business model. Following recent earnings, $Alphabet(GOOG)$ shed nearly $500 billion in market value, reflecting growing concerns about the future profitability of search advertising.

The challenge is becoming clear:
-
AI-generated answers improve the user experience.
-
Better answers reduce the need to visit external websites.
-
Fewer visits mean fewer clicks.
-
Fewer clicks can weaken the advertising ecosystem that has historically powered both publishers and Google itself.
For years, Google's search business thrived by connecting users with websites and monetizing that traffic through advertising. If AI increasingly keeps users inside Google's own ecosystem, the company could end up disrupting not only publishers' business models, but also parts of its own.
In other words, Google's race to dominate AI search may be creating a paradox: improving the product while potentially undermining the economic foundation that made Search so valuable in the first place.
Reddit Chooses Adaptation Over Dependence
Rather than waiting for Google traffic to recover, Reddit appears to be preparing for a different future.
Huffman made it clear that while Reddit cannot control Google's strategy, it can control its own relationship with users.
As a result, the company is no longer assuming that historical levels of Google-driven traffic will return. Among the measures being considered is requiring more users to create accounts and sign in before accessing content.
The message is clear: platforms may increasingly prioritize direct audience relationships over dependence on search engines.
The Bigger Question : What Happens to the Open Web?
Reddit's experience raises a much broader question:
What happens when search engines stop sending users to the websites that create the information in the first place?
For publishers, media companies, forums, and businesses built around organic search traffic, the consequences could be profound. AI-powered search delivers faster and more convenient answers, but it also weakens the referral model that has sustained much of the open internet for decades.
Google Zero is unlikely to arrive overnight. Yet Reddit's recent struggles suggest that the transition may already be underway…
The next challenge for the internet will not be winning visibility on Google. It will be building a sustainable business model in a world where Google no longer delivers the audience it once did…
