Benedict Lim's Playbook: What Makes an Option Expensive? Time, Volatility and Liquidity

Speaker: Benedict Lim, U.S. options trainer and host of one of Singapore's largest retail investor meetup groups, as he breaks down how options are priced and what to check before you trade one. [About the Speaker] Benedict Lim is the host of one of the largest retail investor meetup groups in Singapore, and a stock market trainer on U.S. options with over 15 years of experience in the stock markets. He is also a veteran of the banking industry, having worked at top global banks including Standard Chartered, DBS and HSBC, with over a decade as a financial analyst, business analyst and wealth manager. [The Hook] After the basics, a natural question: why do some options cost so much more than others? Benedict's answer split an option's price into two parts and then gave a short checklist of
Benedict Lim's Playbook: What Makes an Option Expensive? Time, Volatility and Liquidity
TOPJerry Lam: 🐯 If I had to choose, I would prefer to stand on the seller's side where the value of time decreases, but only if the risk is controllable! ** Option buyers need to judge the right direction, magnitude, and timing simultaneously. Even if the stock price moves in line with expectations, they may still incur losses due to the loss of time value or a decrease in implied volatility. In contrast, the seller can benefit from the passage of time. I prefer to collect premium at the price I'm willing to buy through Cash-Secured Put options. Alternatively, after holding the underlying shares, sell the **Covered Call**. However, a higher win rate for sellers does not necessarily mean better returns. In the event of a sharp drop or surge in stock prices, the losses and opportunity costs may far exceed the premium received. Before trading, I focus on checking three key indicators: **Implied volatility IV, bid-ask spread, and expiration time. ** Especially before earnings reports, we cannot only focus on high premium; we must also be wary of the huge price risks reflected in volatility. My principle: I'd rather earn less premium than sell risks I can't afford. ** Options trading is not simply about choosing buyers or sellers, but about choosing strategies that suit the current market environment, risk tolerance, and investment objectives. Time is the seller's friend, but risk management is the guarantee of long-term profitability! ** 🐯

Macro Strategy Weekly: Midterms Could Spark a Rally? But Three Bigger Risks Remain

Weekly Report: Key Views Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of our Macro Strategy Weekly. Each issue features market strategy insights from selected contributors with relevant professional expertise. We also track how their views perform each week. Here is a preview of this week’s key ideas: 1. Divided Government Could Restrict Policy Progress and Reduce Uncertainty Following the Republicans’ loss of their majorities in both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, Trump will face greater constraints and more negotiation over policy during the following two years. This may reduce policy efficiency, although it could also limit the market impact of unexpected measures and create a more stable environment. 2. AI Investment Is Driving a Valuation Reset, With Limited Evidence

SOFI's $32 peak : Rally or Pipe Dream ?

Earnings & Diversification Thesis On Tue, 27 Oct 2026, $SoFi Technologies Inc.(SOFI)$ announced its Q3 2026 earnings. It was a solid set of numbers. Coupled with management’s upwards revision of the bank’s 2026 outlook, sent the stock higher. Since earnings release, SOFI has climbed about +14.79%. (see below) Given the recent run over AI-related stocks, US market (in particular Nasdaq) has been rather volatile - affecting SOFI’s rally in the process. Stocks to Watch as AI Spending Fears Build

US markets are entering another important trading session, with investors balancing AI spending concerns, earnings announcements and uncertainty surrounding the US midterm elections. Monday’s session ended with mixed results. The S&P 500 slipped 0.52%, while the Nasdaq fell 1.1%. Technology and AI-related shares remained under pressure, suggesting investors are becoming more selective about companies exposed to the AI investment cycle. Here are five stocks I am watching today. 1. $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$  – The Biggest Earnings Test AMD is at the top of my watchlist ahead of its earnings announcement after today’s market close. AXP 3Q26: Solid Print, But the Flywheel Is Getting More Expensive

AXP $AXP Energy Ltd(AXP.AU)$ reported a solid 3Q26. Revenue rose 9% to $20.06B. Adjusted EPS rose 13% to $4.68. Card fees rose 16%. Credit improved. But GAAP EPS rose 31%, and about $1.11 of that came from the GBTG equity sale. The headline overstates underlying momentum. Our concern is not demand. It is flywheel economics. CMS/card fees rose to 68% from 58%. Benefit costs are absorbing more of each card-fee increase. NIM expansion is deposit-driven and near its limit. At 16-17x forward P/E, the stock looks fairly valued. We stay Neutral. Earnings quality: The 31% GAAP EPS growth isn't the right operating benchmark. Adjusted EPS +13% is. Three one-offs boosted GAAP: the GBTG sale, provision release, and a lower tax rate. Provisions fell to $985M

ServiceNow (NOW) Q3 2026: The Demand Is Real, but the "Perfect Setup" Just Broke

The market wanted perfection. Despite a strong earnings beat, the stock fell 24% on earnings day. Why? Because after a 66% YTD run fueled by the AI narrative, expectations were flawless. The 24% drop isn't about demand collapsing. $ServiceNow(NOW)$ It's a brutal valuation reset triggered by decelerating cRPO guidance and accounting optics. The underlying business is firing on all cylinders: $5M+ net new ACV deals surged 135% YoY to 19 deals, and the annual AI ACV target was raised to $1.7B. Conditional view: RKLB strangles look expensive in absolute terms, but not clearly “overpriced” versus their own recent volatility history. The important distinction is that the 30-day IV of 89.27% is high, yet its IV percentile is only 33.47% —so this is not near the top of its recent IV range. Rocket Lab (RKLB) watchlist closed at US$54.43 on 2026-11-04 , up 4.53% . Volatility premium: 30-day IV is 1.24× historical volatility , meaning implied volatility is pricing a 24% premium to the historical-volatility reference. That makes long premium less forgiving if the post-launch move fades and realized volatility normalizes. But a major event remains: RKLB is scheduled to report 2026Q3 earnings after the close on 2026-11-09 . That is inside the 30-day window, so some elevated IV is rat

[Earnings Recap] AMD's AI Business Nearly Doubles. Chase or Wait?

Tuesday’s earnings drew a sharp line between companies accelerating into the AI buildout and high-valuation growth stocks that merely met expectations. AMD rallied after data-center revenue nearly doubled and its forecast beat estimates. Shopify moved the other way: 32% revenue growth and a profit beat could not offset small misses in sales and merchandise volume. Arista posted the largest move of the group as demand for AI networking equipment drove its fastest growth since going public. $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ rose more than 5% after hours AMD designs processors and accelerators used in PCs, servers, game consoles and AI data centers. Third-quarter revenue climbed 45% to $13.38 billion, beating the roughly $13.1 billion consensus. GAAP dilu
[Earnings Recap] AMD's AI Business Nearly Doubles. Chase or Wait?
TOP苏36: B. Wait — I'd rather buy at a better price. AMD's results are impressive, but a great earnings report does not automatically make a stock a great entry. The bigger story is not simply that data-center revenue surged 97% to $8.5 billion. AMD is gradually positioning itself as a credible alternative to Nvidia across the AI infrastructure ecosystem. Management's $17 billion Q4 revenue forecast and expectation of over 80% revenue growth in 2027 suggest that demand is accelerating rather than fading. Die Ergebnisse wurde, dass Nvidia's competitive advantage und valuation still deserve attention, dass die execution risks, Nvidia's competitive advantage und valuation verwendet. My strategy is to avoid chasing the initial excitement. I would rather wait for profit-taking or a technical pullback before considering an entry. Strong companies deserve attention, but even great companies can become poor investments when purchased at the wrong price. @Tiger_Earnings [得意]
