Trump Threatens Additional 50% China Tariff Over Retaliation

Bloomberg04-07

President Donald Trump threatened to “impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%” unless Beijing withdraws a 34% retaliatory duty on US goods.

“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump posted on social media.

The 50% charge would come on top of the 34% duty the president imposed on all Chinese imports — set to begin Wednesday — as well as a 20% levy that he put in place earlier tied to fentanyl trafficking, according to a White House official.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump’s comments are the latest sign he is digging in his heels over his sweeping plan to impose duties on virtually all US trading partners. A baseline 10% tariff went into effect Saturday and higher levies on roughly 60 trading partners are due to go into place at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

The president also said that if the Chinese government does not pull back from its plan to retaliate against his reciprocal tariffs, “all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!”

“Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately,” he added.

The president’s tariff plans have caused US stocks to swing wildly, after global markets fell sharply. The offshore yuan fell more than 0.5% to a daily low 7.3382 per dollar after Trump issued his threat.

Will China cave in to USA or choose to accept the additional 50% tariff imposed on their manufactured goods which will result in the US consumers to look elsewhere for cheaper alternatives or start producing on their own soil?

打得一拳開,免得百拳來。💪🏼 Bow down to bully once, bullying will come endlessly. It's been well thought through and planned before execution of eye-for-eye by China. Inevitable final battle as US is already on desperation. 😝

I  don't think ppl here knows why the markets are in red after seeing the comments here. US account for a quarter of the global GDP (PPP). In business, customer are almost always treated like god, unless you are the only one selling the item like ASML🤣

The question here is who need whom more? Does China depend on US to survive? Does US need goods from China to survive? Answer is very obvious. China can just impose temporarily banned on all export to US. Then who will fear more? Trump? Lol

China, every time the bully adds another tariff, do the same to the US. Once tariffs get to, I dont know, but lets say 1000%, the White House bully may start to realise what he has done.

China absolutely trembling in their boots! You can almost hear the collective gasp echoing across the Great Wall. It's not like they're one of the largest economies in the world or anything. Nope, just quaking in fear, poor things! [Happy]  [Grin]  [Glance]
