@nerdbull1669 is an active Star Contributor in the Tiger Community with over 5k followers!! Consistently providing valuable content about his view in investing & trading, he primarily focuses on technology sector stocks, selecting stocks with his AI model screener due to his machine learning background and advance on Technical Analysis. He has a decades of Investing & Trading experience since the 90’s with 300%+ gain from $Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ made significant impact to his portfolio and he mainly focus on technology sector stocks! Please briefly introduce yourself, share your personal investment growth experience, and how you made your first bucket of gold in the market? I’m a machine learning practitioner, I have started to invest and trade when I graduated in the late 90s but stops for quite a while due to work commitments as I travel quite a lot of last time (times when we do not have mobile brokers where we can trade on the go). I have been seriously doing trading and investing for the past 3 years, it was also the time when I joined Tiger Brokers. I also develop an Machine Learning model to help me scan and pick stocks based on my risk profile. It has been helping me so far. The first bucket of gold in the market was made from Bitcoin which I sold when it was at $10,000 which I bought in 2012 when price were lower. I have buy and sell some of them along the way. Why do you use current Tiger nickname: nerdbull1669? Can you tell us the story behind it? I used nerdbull1669, I consider myself a nerd because I love talking to machine, bull refer to my zodiac sign and 1669 is my lucky number. What strategies will you usually use in trading ? Can you tell us about TA, like what value do you hold and which concept you approach, spill some tips for our Tiger friends in the community too! For stocks, I use trend-following that was picked from my AI model. I am currently into thematic investing focusing on technology trends, leverage on what I do as a Machine Learning Practitioner. I believe that technology trend would be something that can go a long way as there was talks on digital transformation before the pandemic, then we saw the acceleration of AI adoption, enterprises and public companies do not want to lose out on this trend. It made me think there are still some smaller AI companies, they could be in software or just startup company stocks which might gain attraction as we navigate 2025. Could you share to us your favorite indicator ? Why do you frequently using it? I used moving averages pretty often, because it helps me to identify the current market trend at different time period. Next, I normally use RSI and MTF to help me to confirm the strength of the trend. MTF (Multi-Timeframe Analysis) is a powerful technique employed by traders to gain a comprehensive understanding of market trends by examining price action across different timeframes. By combining information from various time horizons, traders can filter out noise, identify robust trends, and improve their decision-making process. How I use Multi-Timeframe Analysis to Identify Trend Strength and Direction: Identify the Higher Timeframe Trend: I used MTF to visualize the big picture, start by analyzing the highest timeframe relevant to your trading style, I used daily for swing traders, then shift to weekly for long-term investors. I used Big Bear AI (BBAI) as an example, for swing trade, I looked out for the trend direction, from the chart below, we saw that there is a bullish MACD crossover and an uptrend is formed on 23 Dec, and so this makes my primary context of an uptrend. Next, I move to lower timeframe to look for alignment, which I will use the 1-hour trend, the price action in the chart below confirm the uptrend direction and the stronger the alignment across multiple timeframe, the more robust the trend is considered. This lower timeframe can be also used for entry and exit signals. Can you share more details about the AI model you developed? What parameters or data inputs are most critical for its success? How do you ensure the AI model adapts to changing market conditions or black swan events? The main components are the data gathering for news, events, economic indicators and social media trends, next is the crunching of these data by machine learning (this is by another proprietary model). The most critical parameters are the quality of the data, basically the data collection and clean and preprocess data phase. Changing market conditions or black swan events will be collected and the model will restrain, the model will adjust based on different economic indicators, and social media trends to provide the most appropriate outcome. What is the most successful or impressive investment experience you have had? Can you share some of your outstanding PNL and tell us the story about it ? Other than crypto, the most successful investment I have made is fully paid a residential unit, I managed to buy it before the prices start to soar. The next impressive investment would be using my machine learning knowledge to help me identify the opportunities with Palantir, I have worked with their software before in their early days, I’m impressed by how they have grown over the years. The only regret is I did not manage to increase my positions more when the price is still low. Managed to load some when price is around $26 in another account. The two most impressive stocks in my portfolio are $Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ and $SoFi Technologies Inc.(SOFI)$ . These two stocks I am holding for long term. As I believe the opportunity brought by $Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ in terms of AI development and they complement companies in their AI journey in terms of data crunching. Although Palantir stock have been a roller coaster, I still hold on to it, there are some moments which makes me want to exit the position, but deeper research have reinforce my commitment to stay invested, which eventually paid off. I have used Palantir software before, but the latest platform I haven’t had the chance but considering how they have grown makes me continue to believe in them. $SoFi Technologies Inc.(SOFI)$ would be benefiting from the deregulation from the new Trump administration, there should be more customer acquisition for SOFI, as the student loans growth should be picking up as interest rates would be manageable this year. I normally use 3 different indicators to help me to filter out any false signal that might come due to some unexpected news or events. How do you select stocks and control risks? I develop the AI model to help me select stocks based on my profile at that point of time, it is more than a scanner as it takes into consideration my liquidity position at that time. It has been working pretty well, but I am still seeking ways to improve it as I feel that it can be better. There is another selection for long term which I would do, these are for good quality stocks to hold, the selection criteria basically revolve around whether the stock is cheap (below its intrinsic value), the company cash flow and the earnings performance over at least 4 quarters. I use the win-rate and position size to control my risks, I do not do stop-loss, because moving the stop loss to the point of the entry and so creating a “no risk” trade is a very dangerous and often unprofitable maneuver. I do combine win rate and risk:reward ratio because I feel that it is important to understand that we neither need an insanely high win rate or must hold our trades for a very long time. This is why I have my risk set at 5%. Could you introduce your current positions, and what is your follow-up trading plan? My current position consist of mainly technology stocks and some of the Mag 7 members and do have some bio growth stocks which are not performing well. I do have some Singapore stocks as well mainly in the energy sector. My 2025 trading plan would be focusing on good quality stocks for mid-long-term positions, I am also identifying some of the AI technology stocks that would eventually become winners in the long run. Will AI related Stocks still perform in 2025? What is your pick for this year ? Please tell us the reason picking it and the outlook of it! For me, I am still looking to stay invested in $Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ , but $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ would be coming out as winner again this year, because $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ plan to move into both hardware and software would be something that can benefit the hyperscalers. I have my servers and services running on different hyperscalers, and most of them are running Nvidia chips. I also start to trade in fintech, I believe that fintech stocks would be benefitting from the deregulatory from the new U.S. administration, this could help these fintech companies to grow much faster, I foresee some exponential growth in some of these stocks. $SoFi Technologies Inc.(SOFI)$ is one of my long term fintech stocks, I do hold $Grab Holdings(GRAB)$ and $Block(SQ)$ too because I believe that in the next 5-10 years, there will be decentralized Finance happening, as fintech like $Block(SQ)$ have already embark on crypto, so we will be seeing more fintech coming up to use A.I. together with their core and complementary product, consumer would be getting more assistance through A.I. Not only that accounting and regulatory reporting might be done through A.I. in future once company is able to decentralize their financial reporting, so it would be easier for public to counter check and consolidate. What was the most challenging moment in your trading career, and how did you overcome it? The most challenging moment is emotion control, as I was a passive investor & trader, the emotion is very different when you begin trading actively, this is where I share with my close group of friends (some are experienced active traders). One of them actually introduce me to do meditation, a health meditation which is meant to improve the overall health, it is called 黄帝内经,the very first step is to control your inner emotion and thinking (overthinking is an issue), so through the practice of this meditation over the period of 9 months, I discover that I not only can control how my mind wander and overthink, when something happens, especially when a trade that I make was studied, yet did not work out. I keep overthinking on that particular trade, after I practiced this meditation, I am able to control my emotion and approach why it failed, find out where it might have gone wrong. This has helped me to go back and study my AI model and have since improved it. Any tips, suggestions or words to the Tiger friends in the community? What I have learned is stay invested in the market, if you find that the market sentiment does not sync with you, you can take day off, but always remain invested in the market.
