Today is Vesak Day, a public holiday in Singapore. What’s better than not working? Not working on a Monday!

Vesak Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddhartha Gautama—the Buddha. The day begins with early morning ceremonies at temples. Buddhists gather to celebrate with vibrant decorations, vegetarian food fairs, and public talks, creating a rich cultural atmosphere.

Many devotees spend the day doing good deeds, believing that acts of kindness on Vesak Day bring multiplied blessings. Some release caged birds and animals, symbolizing spiritual liberation.

So, have you decided which temple to visit today?

🛕 Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

This grand temple houses the sacred Buddha Tooth Relic, enshrined in a 3.5-ton stupa made from 320 kg of gold donated by devotees. It’s truly worth a visit.

🛕 Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery

With a history of over a century and a massive 50-acre ground, this temple has been beautifully restored over 11 years. Many of its original structures remain intact.

🛕 Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple

Come here at night to see a temple aglow with thousands of lanterns. The central Buddha statue is brilliantly lit by hundreds of bulbs, creating a breathtaking sight.

🛕 Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery

Hosting one of the most awe-inspiring Vesak Day events in Singapore, this monastery features grand ceremonies, a charity vegetarian fair, and plenty of family-friendly activities to share the warmth of the season.

Although I'm not a Buddhist and don't celebrate Vesak Day religiously, I appreciate this public holiday as a chance to pause and unwind. With no work on a Monday, it feels like a bonus long weekend to slow down from the usual hustle. Instead of visiting temples or crowded events, I chose to stay home and enjoy a peaceful day with my family.

Spending time at home helps me recharge and reconnect with loved ones in a relaxed way. Simple things like home-cooked meals, meaningful conversations, and just being together matter most. I also took a moment to reflect on gratitude, which resonates with Vesak Day’s spirit, even if I don’t observe it religiously.

While I didn’t join Vesak Day activities like temple visits or vegetarian fairs, I respect the festival’s cultural meaning. For me, the holiday is about rest, family bonding, and appreciating life’s simple joys. It’s a refreshing way to start the week with calmness and positive energy.

As usual, I went to Kong Meng San to do my 3 steps 1 bow at 2am.. to avoid the crowd and the humid weather. The journey is 1hrs 45mins - 2hrs. This year, I was a bit slow as half way through the ritual, I was burping non stop. I took deep breath in to ensure I can complete the journey but at certain point, I didn’t bow. I was worried I might vomit.

After the journey, I have the opportunity to be sprayed by the Buddha and bathe the statue of baby Prince Siddharta 3x [Chuckle]. When there is a crowd, I can only do it once. But this morning, I did it 3x. I am so happy. Thereafter, I prayed and do offering before I proceed to have my vegetarian noodle provided the temple.

Once I reached home, I have a shower and slept on and off. Woke up to cook lunch and then back to sleep again. Today I m a sleeping beauty. 🤭😅😇

I didn’t put on knee or elbow pad hence abrasion on knee and elbow. It will take about 2-4 weeks to be fully healed. 😅🤭🙏🙏🙏😂

No work on Monday is really just another day to rest and sleep in! As I am a Christian, I won’t be celebrating this festival and will instead take this as an opportunity to spend time with my family and to plan for our upcoming trip together. I treasure family time and creating meaningful memories together. Just had lunch together and will also be going for dessert soon! Although we do not go visiting to any temples, I agree that each year as we watch the 3 step and 1 bow procession being reported on television, the devotion of the devotees is always inspiring.

🌟🌟🌟Vesak Day is a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with our inner values while celebrating one of Buddhism's most important festivals.

Vesak Day is also a time for giving.  Contributing to worthwhile causes such as donations or other forms of assistance not only helps those in need but also embodies the spirit of compassion and generosity which form the core of Buddha's teachings.

By eating a vegetarian meal on Vesak Day, we minimise the harm done to living creatures.  This act of compassion reflects our commitment to treat all living creatures with respect and kindness.  This is a value that resonates deeply on Vesak Day which celebrates Buddha's life and his teachings of love and compassion.

Vesak Day is more than just a public holiday.  By visiting temples, engaging in meditation and embracing acts of charity, we celebrate the spirit of Vesak Day in a way that nourishes both our mind and the community.

  • Vesak Day, also known as Buddha's Birthday or Buddha Day, is a major Buddhist holiday commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama, who is known as the Buddha. It's celebrated annually on the full moon in the month of Vaisakha, which typically falls in April or May on the Gregorian calendar. It's a time of reflection, good deeds, and celebrating the Buddha's teachings.

I'm a Buddhist. We usually head to the temple for a vegetarian meal and a little ritual to bathe the baby Buddha. However, we didn't go to the temple this year because my family is down with cough, flu, runny nose, and sore throat that could be further aggravated by incense smoke. So we stayed home and do homework since exams are round the corner.

    Happy Birthday baby Buddha! 🪷
