Overnight Read:
Wall Street rebounded Tuesday, Dow up 0.30% to 53,577.40, S&P up 0.32%, Nasdaq up 0.66%, helped by crude oil falling nearly 5% on signs Iran may be open to negotiations, even as new US sanctions against Iran were announced the same day. Back home, STI gained 0.97% to close at 5,735.68, led by Seatrium (+3.35%), OCBC (+1.84%), and Singtel (+1.58%). Separately, SingStat reported household net worth grew 6.8% year-on-year in Q2, assets up 7.0%, though household liabilities grew faster still, 8.3%, driven by mortgage and personal loans. Personal disposable income rose 6.9%, while the household saving rate moderated to 32.3% from 39.1% the quarter before.
My Personal Take:
Seatrium leading the index up a day after dropping nearly 3% with nothing attached to explain it either time is exactly the pattern I flagged yesterday, still no answer, just now pointing the other direction. I'm treating this the same way, filed as unresolved, not a name I'd read a trend into off two unexplained sessions. The household numbers interest me more this morning. Net worth growing 6.8% sounds reassuring until you notice liabilities are growing faster than assets, 8.3% against 7.0%, and the saving rate dropped hard in a single quarter. None of that is alarming on its own, but it's worth knowing whether your own household mirrors that pattern or bucks it, since a rising net worth figure can mask a genuinely more leveraged household underneath it.
