【Events】How Well Do You Really Know ETFs?

ETFs look simple — until leverage, fees and interest rates enter the picture.

Think you know your stuff? Take this 10-question quiz and see how far you get. 👀

Q1: You want broad exposure to big U.S. tech names. Which ETF fits best?

  • A. QQQ

  • B. GLD

  • C. TLT

  • D. USO

Q2: VOO and SPY both track:

  • A. Nasdaq-100

  • B. S&P 500

  • C. Dow Jones Industrial Average

  • D. Russell 2000

Q3: If the Nasdaq-100 rises 2% in one day, TQQQ would be expected to gain roughly:

  • A. 2%

  • B. 3%

  • C. 6%

  • D. 10%

Q4: Leveraged ETFs are generally more suitable for investors who:

  • A. Want something they can buy and forget for decades

  • B. Have a short-term view and are comfortable with bigger swings

  • C. Want to protect their principal

  • D. Want to avoid drawdowns

Q5: You’re bullish on semiconductors but don’t want to bet on one stock. Which ETF makes the most sense?

  • A. SMH

  • B. QQQ

  • C. VOO

  • D. TLT

Q6: Why can TQQQ lose money even if the Nasdaq-100 eventually gets back to where it started?

  • A. TQQQ automatically loses 30% a year

  • B. It resets daily, so compounding and volatility can hurt returns over time

  • C. TQQQ can fall even when the Nasdaq-100 rises

  • D. All leveraged ETFs eventually go to zero

Q7: Two ETFs both track the S&P 500. One charges 0.03% a year, while the other charges 0.20%. For a long-term investor, which is generally better, all else equal?

  • A. The fee difference doesn’t matter

  • B. The lower-cost ETF

  • C. The higher-cost ETF, because higher fees mean better performance

  • D. Fees only matter for short-term traders

Q8: Why do long-term bond ETFs usually fall when interest rates rise sharply?

  • A. There are fewer bonds in the market

  • B. New bonds offer higher yields, making older bonds less attractive

  • C. The ETF has to sell all of its holdings

  • D. Higher rates reduce every bond’s face value

Q9: An index rises 10% on Day 1, then falls 9.09% on Day 2, ending almost exactly where it started. What would likely happen to a daily 2x leveraged ETF over those two days?

  • A. Roughly flat

  • B. A small gain

  • C. A small loss

  • D. Up 20%

Q10: An ETF holds 100 stocks. Is it automatically less risky than one that holds 20?

  • A. Yes. More stocks always means less risk

  • B. No. It also depends on concentration, sector exposure and how closely the holdings move together

  • C. Yes. More than 50 stocks means it’s low risk

  • D. No. Risk depends only on the share price

    The answers are:

    1A, 2B, 3C, 4B, 5A, 6B, 7B, 8B, 9C, 10B

For Q9, the 2× ETF rises about 20% on Day 1, then falls about 18.18% on Day 2. Starting from 100: 100 → 120 → about 98.18, resulting in a small loss despite the underlying index returning to roughly its starting point. This demonstrates volatility drag from daily resetting.

ETFs are fantastic, versatile tools for building long-term portfolio core holdings, but products like TQQQ or SOXL require extra caution. Because of daily resets and volatility decay, leveraged ETFs are better suited for short-term tactical trades rather than buy-and-hold investing.

My key takeaway is that successful ETF investing goes far beyond choosing the right underlying index. Expense ratios, concentration risk, interest rate dynamics, and structural leverage mechanics significantly influence long-term performance. Keeping fees low and staying disciplined with risk management are essential strategies to avoid emotional trading and maintain consistent portfolio growth.

I am quite familiar with ETFs, but leveraged ETFs are where I pay much more attention to daily resets, volatility and compounding. I would not treat TQQQ or SOXL like a simple long-term ETF.

My biggest takeaway is that ETF investing is not just about picking the right index. Fees, leverage, interest rates, concentration and volatility can all change the outcome significantly. I prefer using ETFs according to their purpose, while staying disciplined and avoiding FOMO.
