The Buffett Trade Is Back. But Everyone Is Reading It Wrong.

Tech sold off.

Meanwhile:

PG +5.58%

KO +2.87%

LLY +2.83%

WMT +2.82%

COST +1.99%

BRK.B +1.32%

At first glance, the message looks obvious:

AI out. Defensives in.

I think that interpretation is too simple.

The market is not suddenly abandoning technology to buy toothpaste, Coke and supermarkets.

It may be doing something much more important:

changing the price it is willing to pay for uncertainty.

And that could affect how I position for the rest of 2026.

🔵 WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED?

For much of the AI rally, investors rewarded companies for what their earnings could become.

AI infrastructure spending accelerated.

Revenue expectations exploded.

Multiples expanded.

Future cash flows were pulled forward into today's stock prices.

That works beautifully while expectations keep rising.

But once valuations become extreme, the hurdle changes.

A company no longer needs merely to grow.

It needs to grow faster than the market already expects.

That is why some spectacular AI businesses can fall even when their businesses remain healthy.

The stock and the company are not the same thing.

Meanwhile, companies generating predictable cash today suddenly look much more attractive.

The market may be rotating from:

“How big could this become?”

to:

“How much cash does this produce now?”

That is the Buffett trade.

But there is a twist.

🟢 BUFFETT IS NOT REALLY MAKING A “DEFENSIVE” TRADE

Look at Berkshire's positioning.

Yes, Berkshire has roughly $360 billion of cash.

Yes, buybacks have resumed.

Yes, Buffett-style investing emphasises durable businesses, strong balance sheets and sensible valuations.

But Berkshire also built a much larger position in Alphabet.

That matters.

Because Alphabet is hardly an anti-AI trade.

It is one of the world's largest AI investors.

So the real Buffett lesson is not:

Sell technology. Buy defensives.

It is:

Buy businesses where cash generation supports the valuation.

That distinction completely changes how I interpret this rotation.

THE MARKET MAY BE SPLITTING AI INTO TWO CAMPS

This is where I think the next opportunity develops.

CAMP 1: AI PROMISE

Companies priced primarily around what AI might generate several years from now.

These become vulnerable when multiples compress.

CAMP 2: AI CASH MACHINES

Companies already producing enormous cash flows while simultaneously investing in AI.

Think Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and parts of the semiconductor ecosystem.

They can still fall during a rotation.

But fundamentally, they are very different animals.

That means I would not sell quality AI simply because PG and KO suddenly rally.

In fact, if defensive rotation pushes high-quality technology sufficiently lower while their earnings remain intact, I eventually want to rotate back into technology.

That is the trade I am preparing for.

🔴 THERE IS ALSO A TRAP IN THE “BUFFETT TRADE”

Defensive does not mean cheap.

This is critical.

If everyone simultaneously decides they want safety, investors can push consumer staples and defensive compounders to valuations that no longer offer defensive returns.

Then something ironic happens:

Investors fleeing expensive technology create expensive defensives.

At that point, the safety trade becomes crowded.

So I would not chase PG +5.6% simply because technology fell.

I want to know whether this is a lasting regime change or a temporary flight to safety.

🚦 MY ROTATION DASHBOARD

Here are the signals I would watch.

🟢 A LASTING BUFFETT ROTATION

I become convinced if:

1. Defensives keep outperforming even when Nasdaq stabilises.

That tells me investors genuinely prefer earnings visibility rather than merely hiding during a selloff.

2. Market breadth broadens.

The rally needs to spread beyond five or six defensive names.

3. AI earnings remain good but AI stocks stop responding.

This would be particularly important.

If companies beat expectations and still cannot rally, valuation compression is probably not finished.

4. Berkshire begins deploying more of its cash pile.

That would tell me attractive valuations are finally appearing.

🔴 A FALSE ROTATION

I become sceptical if:

Tech rebounds sharply while PG, KO, WMT and COST immediately surrender their relative gains.

That would suggest this was simply a temporary shelter during an AI correction.

💰 HOW I WOULD POSITION $10,000 TODAY

I would not suddenly move everything into defensives.

I would barbell it.

🟢 $3,000: Broad market / quality compounders

This keeps me participating without needing to predict the rotation perfectly.

🟢 $2,000: Cash-generating defensives

Not chasing vertical moves. Accumulate on weakness.

🟡 $2,000: Quality AI

Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and selected semiconductor leaders if valuations reset further.

🔵 $3,000: CASH

This may be the most important position.

Because if AI corrects another 10%-15% without earnings collapsing, I want ammunition.

And if defensives correct after becoming overcrowded, I want ammunition there too.

Cash is not dead money when volatility creates opportunity.

It is optionality.

🔮 MY NEXT 4-8 WEEK SCENARIOS

🟡 50%: ROTATION, NOT REGIME CHANGE

Defensives continue outperforming temporarily while technology repairs technical damage.

But quality AI eventually attracts buyers again.

This is my base case.

🟢 30%: TRUE CASH-FLOW REGIME

Investors continue reducing exposure to long-duration growth.

Staples, healthcare, quality financials and cash-generating mega caps outperform.

The important word is quality, not simply “defensive.”

🔴 20%: AI ROARS BACK

Technology earnings overwhelm valuation concerns.

Money rotates rapidly back toward semiconductors and AI infrastructure.

Recent defensive winners give back relative gains.

THE TRADE I ACTUALLY WANT

Here is where my interpretation differs.

I do not want to choose between Buffett and AI.

I want to apply Buffett's framework to AI.

Give me:

AI exposure

real revenue

real margins

real free cash flow

a valuation that gives me room to be wrong.

That combination becomes much more attractive to me than either extreme:

an expensive defensive stock with little growth,

or an AI company valued entirely on tomorrow.

MY CALL

The Buffett trade is back.

But I do not think the message is:

“Technology is finished.”

I think the message is:

“The free pass on valuation is finished.”

That is a very different market.

In 2025 and early 2026, simply having AI exposure could expand a multiple.

The next stage may require companies to prove:

AI spending → revenue → margins → free cash flow.

And ironically, that could ultimately make the strongest AI companies better investments, because a correction separates genuine cash-generating winners from stocks that were simply riding the narrative.

So I am not abandoning AI.

I am raising the hurdle.

Cash flow first. Story second. Valuation always.

That may be the most Buffett-like AI trade of all.

I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!

If you had $10,000 today, would you buy Buffett-style defensives, beaten-down AI, or keep cash waiting for the next flush?

Defensives up 5% while tech resets tells me certainty is getting repriced, but these staples are not exactly cheap either. How much premium is too much for predictability here

AI is not done, the bar just moved up. That spending to revenue to margin chain is already showing up in a few names, so this feels more like repricing uncertainty than killing the theme
