SK Hynix Q3 Earnings: High Expectations, Guard Against a Pullback

1. Options Pricing

Based on a $137 stock price, the expected move for this earnings report is about ±9.32%, meaning a reference range of about $124–150 around earnings.

  • Expected range: $124–150.

  • Implied volatility (IV): 72.49%, meaning the options market is pricing in high future volatility.

  • IV percentile: 54.79%, meaning current IV is above about 54.79% of past observations — medium-high, not an extreme historic high.

Pricing read: The market has already priced in a lot of room for volatility around earnings. If results meet expectations, the stock may not move through the full $124–150 range. If management's guidance on HBM, DRAM supply and demand, and future pricing beats expectations — or if the market worries about AI investment returns — the stock could still break out of the range.

Note: $124–150 is a reference range based on current pricing assumptions, not a guaranteed ceiling or floor.

2. Gamma Analysis

SK Hynix is around $137. On the upside, first watch $145 — that's both max pain and an important Call wall. After a breakout, watch $150–155. On the downside, watch the two Put walls at $135 and $130. If it breaks $130 and then loses $127.2, the stock could extend toward $120.

New Puts are concentrated at deep out-of-the-money levels like $80 and $90, more likely for tail-risk protection.

Core view: If earnings reaction is calm, watch $135–145. A bullish breakout above $145 puts $150–155 in play. A bearish break below $127.2 puts $120 in focus.

3. Big Options Order Analysis

These big orders reflect positioning across different time frames. You can't confirm the final bullish or bearish view from trade direction alone. Combo trades especially need both legs judged together.

1. Long-term money betting on upside
[Buyer] SKHY | 2027/01/15 130 Call$SKHY 20270115 130.0 CALL$
About 11K contracts | estimated premium spend about $25M | stock around $141.75–141.76 when traded

This is buyer opening activity. The 130 Call was in the money at the time, showing money is willing to spend a lot to bet SK Hynix still has upside over the next few months.
Key level: $130 is the strike for this long-term bullish option. Short term, watch whether $145 breaks and whether $150–155 opens more upside.

2. Short-term guard against a break above $155
[Seller] SKHY | 2026/10/30 155 Call $SKHY 20261030 155.0 CALL$
3,998 contracts | about $1.1674M traded | stock around $143.89 when traded
[Buyer] SKHY | 2026/10/30 170 Call $SKHY 20261030 170.0 CALL$
3,998 contracts | about $307.8K traded | stock around $143.89 when traded

These two make up a Bear Call Spread: sell 155 Call, buy 170 Call. If the contract counts and trade pairing are correct, net premium is about $2.15 per share, reflecting a view that the stock won't break much above $155 before expiry, while the 170 Call caps upside risk.
Key levels: $145 is important near-term resistance. $155 is the short Call strike in this combo. If the stock holds above $155, the original range view needs to be reassessed.

3. Betting upside is limited before earnings
[Seller] SKHY | 2026/10/30 141 Call$SKHY 20261030 141.0 CALL$
2,325 contracts | about $1.0579M traded | stock around $136.44 when traded
[Buyer] SKHY | 2026/10/30 145 Call$SKHY 20261030 145.0 CALL$
2,325 contracts | about $753.3K traded | stock around $136.44 when traded

Together, this is a Bear Call Spread: sell 141 Call, buy 145 Call. Based on the trade prices, net premium is about $1.31 per share. This may reflect a view that post-earnings upside is limited, but it doesn't mean the stock must fall.
Key levels: $141 is the short Call strike; $145 caps the risk. If the stock jumps and holds above $145 after earnings, this strategy faces more pressure.

4. Selling deep out-of-the-money Puts to collect premium
[Seller] SKHY | 2026/11/20 105 Put$SKHY 20261120 105.0 PUT$
5,630 contracts | about $478.5K–$484.2K traded | stock around $139.89 when traded

This trade sells a deep OTM Put to collect premium. The $105 strike is well below the stock price at the time, showing the seller is willing to take some downside risk in exchange for premium income.
Key level: $105 is the strike, not a guaranteed support level. If earnings cause a big drop, the seller can still lose. Don't read this as a low-risk sure-profit strategy.

Big order summary: Long-term money leans bullish. Short-term money is selling Call spreads to limit risk and bet upside is limited, and some money is selling deep OTM Puts to collect premium. This time-frame split shows the market may like SK Hynix's medium- to long-term basics, but not all money expects a big post-earnings rally.

4. Basics Analysis

The key to SK Hynix's earnings isn't just whether the quarter beats. It's whether management can confirm memory supply and demand will stay tight.

First, AI servers keep increasing demand for HBM high-bandwidth memory. HBM4 capacity ramp and next-gen product progress will affect future growth.

Second, traditional DRAM pricing and supply are still important. If contract prices keep rising, that helps revenue and profit.

Third, the market is also watching whether the company boosts shareholder returns through special dividends or buybacks.

But whether AI capex keeps turning into real demand, whether memory prices stay strong, and management's 2027 supply-demand outlook can all affect the post-earnings stock reaction. Even with strong results, the stock can fall if forward guidance is below expectations.

5. Three Post-Earnings Scenarios and Possible Responses

These are options education examples, assuming a stock price of about $137 and an expected range of $124–150. Actual premiums, breakevens, and max P&L must be recalculated from post-earnings option quotes. Not investment advice.

Scenario 1: Range-bound ($124–150) — volatility fades
Market conditions: Earnings meet expectations, no big surprises in HBM or DRAM outlook, and the stock doesn't clearly break $150 or $124. If uncertainty falls after earnings, IV may drop (IV crush), pressuring option prices.

Example strategy: Iron Condor

  • Sell 120 Put, buy 115 Put for downside protection.

  • Sell 155 Call, buy 160 Call for upside protection.
This strategy makes money if the stock stays in a range at expiration and time value decays. The bought options on both ends cap theoretical max loss.
Key watch: $135–145 is the core Gamma zone; $145 is important resistance. If the stock stays in range, also confirm whether IV falls and whether the spread offers reasonable potential return.
Risk: If the stock gaps above $155 or below $120 after earnings, the strategy can still lose up to its set max risk.

Scenario 2: Earnings beat, stock breaks above $150
Market conditions: HBM4 progress, DRAM prices, or future supply-demand guidance beat expectations. The stock breaks $145 and then holds above $150, showing the market may be repricing.

Example strategy: Bull Call Spread

  • Buy 150 Call.

  • Sell 160 Call.
This pays net premium to participate in upside. Compared with buying a Call alone, selling the higher-strike Call lowers initial cost but also caps max gain.
    Watch and respond:

  • If the stock breaks $150 and holds, watch whether $155 becomes support, then assess upside momentum.

  • If the stock gaps straight to around $160, recalculate the spread's remaining gain. Don't ignore cost just because you're bullish.

  • If it breaks out then quickly falls back below $145, the breakout may have failed — reassess the strategy.
Risk: Even if the direction is right, buying when IV is too high can still hurt returns if IV crushes after earnings. Being bullish doesn't mean any price for a Call is worth it.

Scenario 3: Earnings miss, stock breaks below $124
Market conditions: Quarterly results or forward guidance miss, the market starts worrying memory price increases can't last, and the stock breaks below the $124 expected floor. If it also loses $130 and the Gamma Flip at $127.2, short-term swings may get bigger.

Example strategy: Bear Put Spread

  • Buy 125 Put.

  • Sell 115 Put.
This buys a higher-strike Put to play downside and sells a lower-strike Put to lower cost. Max loss is the net premium paid; max gain is capped by the distance between strikes.
    Watch and respond:

  • Break below $130: watch whether it also loses the Gamma Flip at $127.2.

  • Break below $124: the stock has left the original expected range — reassess whether the market is pricing in worse basics.

  • Near $120: watch for signs of bottoming. Avoid chasing high-IV Puts after a sharp drop.
Risk: If the stock has already gapped down hard, Put IV may rise too, making it more expensive to chase. If the stock then bounces or IV drops fast, the option can still lose even if the initial direction call was right.

6. Final Take

SK Hynix's long-term basics are still supported by HBM demand, DRAM prices, and tight supply. But post-earnings stock performance also depends on management's forward supply-demand guidance and whether the market has already priced in the good news.

The options market's reference range is $124–150. The positive Gamma structure suggests short-term range compression is still possible. Big orders show a split: long-term bullish, short-term capping upside.

Trading watch points: $145 is important upside resistance; $150 is the top of the expected range. On the downside, watch $130 and the Gamma Flip at $127.2. After earnings, first watch the breakout direction, trade structure, and IV changes, then assess strategy — don't decide whether to buy or sell options based only on whether results were good or bad.

Gamma flip under 127.2 is where downside can speed up fast. If IV drops from 72.49% back toward median, which structure holds up better?
