Weekly Options Preview | Earnings Won't Save Tech Stocks
1. This Week's Market Overview
From Oct 26 to 30, US stocks face a triple test: earnings, the Fed, and inflation data. Over the past two weeks, the tech sector fell about 7%. Money is starting to worry that AI companies are spending too much and financing costs are rising — can they really earn back the investment? Meta had strong revenue and guidance, but the stock was pressured by capex and financing worries. That shows the market isn't just looking at growth anymore — it also wants cash flow and return on investment.
But AI demand hasn't disappeared. Memory, cloud, and compute orders still have support. This week, earnings from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and other giants will test whether AI demand can turn into revenue. If results are strong and guidance is good, tech stocks may recover. If capex keeps rising and returns stay unclear, selling may continue.
2. This Week's Event Calendar
Oct 27: SK Hynix, Visa, and Coca-Cola report. Focus on memory demand, pricing, and consumer conditions.
Oct 28: Microsoft and Alphabet report. Focus on Azure and Google Cloud growth, and whether AI capex is bringing in revenue.
Early Oct 29: The Fed announces its rate decision. The market expects the upper bound to stay at 4.00%. The chair's press conference will affect rate expectations.
Evening Oct 29: US Q3 GDP first estimate, September personal income and spending, and PCE inflation data. A strong economy with high inflation could add pressure on high-valuation tech stocks.
Oct 29–30: Amazon, Intel, SNDK, Eli Lilly, Mastercard, Caterpillar, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron report. Watch cloud demand, semiconductor recovery, and energy costs.

[Buyer] SOXX | 2026/10/30 360 Put$SOXX 20261030 360.0 PUT$
About 70K contracts | about $1.11M traded | stock at $505.76 when traded.
Money is guarding against: an extreme short-term semiconductor drop. 360 is far below the stock price at the time, so it could be tail insurance or a high-risk directional bet.
[Buyer] DRAM | 2027/01/15 60 Call$DRAM 20270115 60.0 CALL$
About 87K contracts | representative trade about $8.47M | stock around $48.16–48.45 when traded.
Money is betting on: the memory cycle continuing, with the stock challenging $60. Long-term bullish positioning and short-term semi hedging exist side by side.
[Buyer] SPY | 2026/12/31 730 Put$SPY 20261231 730.0 PUT$
About 10K contracts | about $10.25M traded | underlying at $762.66.
Money is guarding against: a market pullback before year-end, or insurance for existing long positions.
[Buyer] QQQ | 2026/10/30 696 Put$QQQ 20261030 696.0 PUT$
About 22K contracts | about $7.524M traded | stock at $721.62 when traded.
Money is guarding against: a short-term Nasdaq drop, matching recent tech selling and high IV.
[Combo] NVDA | 2027/01/15 185 Put + 235 Call$NVDA 20270115 185.0 PUT$
About 11.1K contracts each | Put about $4.5085M, Call about $10.2414M traded.
Money is betting on: AI compute demand continuing and pushing the stock higher; but selling the 185 Put also carries downside risk.
[Buyer] EWY | 2026/12/18 185 Call$EWY 20261218 185.0 CALL$
About 24.7K contracts | about $9.01M traded | stock at $158 when traded.
Money is betting on: a later rebound in Korean stocks and tech. But $185 is about 17% above the trade-time price, so it needs a big move.
[Buyer] QQQ | 2026/10/30 729 Call$QQQ 20261030 729.0 CALL$
About 6,838 contracts | about $4.6156M traded | stock at $718.40 when traded.
Money is betting on: a Nasdaq rebound by month-end. But short-dated Calls are easily hurt by time decay.
5. This Week's Strategy Preview
This week, don't just bet that "bad earnings news is already priced in." Watch whether earnings, rates, and money flow send a consistent signal.
Broad market: SPY first watch 760. If it fails, watch 750 and 745; 740 is a deeper pullback scenario. Only if it gets back above the Gamma flip point of 774.9 can we assess whether risk appetite is improving.
Tech: Microsoft, Google, and Amazon earnings focus on cloud growth, AI revenue, and capex. Even if results beat, the stock can fall if spending grows faster than revenue.
Semis: SOXX deep OTM Puts and DRAM long-dated Calls showing up together reflects short-term hedging and long-term bullishness side by side. Wait for prices to stabilize and guidance to confirm before judging whether a bounce setup exists.
Macro: The Fed statement, the chair's press conference, and GDP/PCE data may enlargement swings. If inflation is high and policy is hawkish, watch for more valuation pressure on tech. Only if data cools and company guidance is solid will the market have room to recover.
6. Risk Notes
-
Macro risk: The Fed rate decision, US GDP, and PCE data may change rate expectations. If Treasury yields rise, high-valuation tech stocks could face more valuation pressure.
-
Earnings risk: Big tech reports heavily this week. Even if revenue or profit beats, the stock can fall if AI capex keeps rising, cash flow is pressured, or forward guidance is weak.
-
Options risk: Implied ranges are market expectations based on option prices, not guaranteed price limits. Gamma levels, support/resistance zones, and big-order intent can change with the market and shouldn't be used alone as trading signals.
-
Data limits: Some big option orders lack full trade timing, direction, or combo info, so you can't confirm institutional intent from contract count and amount alone. Key levels and options data for individual assets may also differ by source and methodology.
