10/27 Strategy Preview | AI Stays Strong, Guard Against Volatility

1 What Happened Today

AI funding pressure is easing. Semiconductors are in focus, but money is still buying insurance.

Anthropic filed its S-1 for an IPO, and the market's view on its revenue growth, customer expansion, and cash flow turned more positive. Add Broadcom getting about $63B in financing, Meta announcing a $95B equity financing plan, and news of AI compute leasing financing — worries about whether AI companies can keep raising money have eased a bit.

QQQ closed up 1.1%, semis rose 2.9%, and optical modules and memory chips led. Supply chain news shows TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging quotes are being discussed for a 10% to 20% price hike, with equipment lead times extended to 6–8 months. That shows AI chip demand is still strong, but the capacity bottleneck is getting worse.

Tomorrow's focus: SK Hynix earnings on Oct 28. The market isn't just watching profit. It wants HBM4 yield, memory chip prices, future supply and demand, and shareholder returns. If management gives strong guidance, it could support memory and semis further. If the outlook misses, the stock can still come under pressure even with good current results.

2 What Money Is Betting On / Protecting Against

Buyers: Buying insurance early, while betting on financials and semis

① [Buyer] VIX | 2027/02/17 22 Call$VIX 20270217 22.0 CALL$

About 45.4K contracts total | about $12.25M traded | VIX around 17.86–18.30

Big buying of volatility calls, possibly to guard against future market swings, especially earnings and Fed risk. Long-dated options like this don't mean the market must fall — they can also be portfolio protection.

② [Buyer] XLF | 2028/12/15 60 Call$XLF 20281215 60.0 CALL$

15K contracts | about $9.38M traded | current price $56.19

Buying long-dated financial sector calls, betting financials have upside. But with a long expiry, don't read it as an immediate breakout signal.

③ [Buyer] SPCX | 2026/11/06 175 Call$SPCX 20261106 175.0 CALL$

23.1K contracts | about $578.7K traded | current price $145.61

Short-dated call buying, possibly a bet on a fast short-term rally. The $175 strike is about 20% above the current price — a high-risk directional bet. If the stock doesn't rise quickly, time value can disappear fast.

④ [Buyer] SKHY | 2026/11/20 155 Call$SKHY 20261120 155.0 CALL$

About 9,580 contracts opened | screenshot shows about $889.8K traded | current price $142.60

With SK Hynix earnings on Oct 28, this trade is worth watching — possibly a bet on an earnings rally. But the $155 strike is above the current price, and good earnings don't guarantee the stock breaks the strike before expiry.

Sellers: Supply showing up above big tech, and some semis money collecting rent

① [Seller] TSLA | 2027/01/15 440 Call$TSLA 20270115 440.0 CALL$

10K contracts | about $14.4M traded | current price $394.58

Big call selling, possibly to collect premium from time decay, or a bet the stock can't break $440 much short term. But if it's part of a spread or covered strategy, one trade alone can't confirm how bearish it really is.

② [Seller] SMH | 2027/01/15 560 Call$SMH 20270115 560.0 CALL$

About 6,500 contracts total | about $20.6M traded | current price around $543.58–544.61

Big call selling in the semi ETF after the bounce. $560 is an upside watch level. It may reflect a desire to collect premium or a view that gains are limited. But it doesn't mean $560 must become resistance — watch follow-up trades and open interest.

③ [Seller] AAPL | 2026/11/04 362.5 Call$AAPL 20261104 362.5 CALL$

About 9,999 contracts | about $1.73M traded | current price $346.82

Big call selling before earnings, possibly showing some money doesn't want to chase, or wants to collect premium before the report. Expiry is right next to the earnings window, so if the stock jumps on results, sellers can still face big risk.

④ [Seller] META | 2026/12/18 545 Put$META 20261218 545.0 PUT$

2,198 contracts | about $1.54M traded | current price $632.99

Selling puts may mean the seller thinks the stock is unlikely to break $545, or is willing to buy at that price. It leans toward a stable view, but watch assignment risk if the stock falls.

Other trades worth watching:

  • XLE | 2026/11/20 67.5 Put: 14.7K contracts bought, about $1.72M traded, current price $69.65. Possibly a bet on energy sector downside, or a hedge for related positions.

  • PG | 2027/03/19 175 Call: 9,670 contracts sold, about $2.61M traded, current price $159.17. Possibly collecting premium, betting the stock can't rally fast.

  • MSFT | 2027/01/15 585 Call: About 41K contracts opened, but buy/sell direction alternated and open interest didn't clearly rise, so no clear one-way signal — don't treat it as bullish or bearish.

3 What to Watch for Related Tickers

Semis / SMH, SKHY: Can earnings good news extend the sector bounce?

AI financing news improved market mood, and tight CoWoS capacity plus talk of price hikes support semi demand. But SMH saw 560 Call selling after the bounce, showing some money may want to limit risk or collect premium up there.

SK Hynix earnings are a key near-term catalyst. Beyond operating profit, watch HBM4 yield, memory chip prices, Q4 shipment growth, and buyback/dividend plans. Strong outlook could push memory stocks higher; conservative guidance could cause sharp swings given crowded short positions.

VIX: Hedging demand is worth noting.

Big buying of 2027 VIX calls shows some money is willing to pay to guard against future swings. This isn't contradictory with QQQ and semis rising: the market can chase AI while buying insurance for earnings and macro events. With a long expiry, this is more of a medium- to long-term risk signal than a today-bearish call.

TSLA, AAPL: Watch upside pressure and earnings swings.

TSLA's 440 Call selling shows the strike area is worth watching, but with a long expiry it's not a hard short-term resistance. AAPL's 362.5 Call is more sensitive to a gap because expiry is close to earnings. Actual moves around earnings can be bigger than normal — don't rely only on seller signals to judge direction.

SPCX: High-strike short-dated bet, heavy time pressure.

Current price is $145.61, and the 175 Call is about 20% above. If the stock can't rally fast, the option can lose value from time decay. This looks more like a high-risk event bet — don't treat volume as a bullish success rate.

4 What to Watch Before the Open Today

  1. SK Hynix and memory: Does earnings raise profit outlook? Do HBM4, memory prices, Q4 shipments, and shareholder returns beat expectations?

  2. SMH semi ETF: Does Call selling near $560 create short-term supply? If the sector keeps rising, watch whether price holds with new buying.

  3. VIX and the market: Does big VIX Call volume come with rising volatility? If the index is strong but hedging demand rises too, the market may still be defensive.

  4. AI financing and infrastructure: Do Anthropic's S-1 updates, cloud revenue, and AI capex keep supporting semi valuations?

  5. TSLA, AAPL, META: TSLA's $440, AAPL's $362.5, and META's $545 are option strike watch levels, not guaranteed support or resistance.

One-Line Read

AI funding worries are easing, and the semi bounce has fundamental support. But VIX hedging and Call selling in SMH, TSLA, and others remind us the market isn't fully relaxed. Tomorrow's SK Hynix earnings are key to whether the memory rally continues.

Risk note: This is an educational read of options trades and market events, not investment advice. Big-order direction doesn't equal final position direction, and trades may involve spreads, covered calls, or hedges. Options have time decay and leverage risk, and prices can swing hard around earnings.

That 10% to 20% CoWoS hike plus 6 to 8 month lead times matters more than the bounce. Capacity is still tight, so SK Hynix HBM4 yield probably decides whether semis keep running
