Xun Xiang’s Playbook: How to Read the SGX ETF Top-10 Lists (and Meet the Lion Global Investors ETF L

Speaker: Ong Xun Xiang, Head of ETFs at Lion Global Investors, opens the evening by introducing the firm behind ten SGX-listed ETFs and showing first-time ETF investors how to read the SGX top-10 rankings: by size, by retirement-account investors and by trading volume.

[About the Speaker] Ong Xun Xiang is Head of ETFs at Lion Global Investors, where he is responsible for building and commercialising the firm’s ETF business, including speaking at ETF events to share investment and industry knowledge with the public. He has worked across asset management, private banking and fintech. Before joining Lion Global Investors, he was a Capital Markets Assistant Vice-President at ADDX (formerly iSTOX), a MAS-licensed digital securities platform, and earlier an Assistant Vice-President in BNP Paribas Wealth Management’s Key Client Group, where he helped originate and manage private market investment opportunities for ultra-high-net-worth individuals. He holds a Bachelor of Accountancy from Nanyang Technological University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), Chartered Accountant (Singapore) and ASEAN CPA charterholder.

[The Hook] Xun Xiang framed the evening around one idea: how investors can combine different building blocks to build a more resilient portfolio when market conditions keep changing. Before getting to the individual products (financials, bonds and Singapore’s “green leaders”, covered in the next three recaps), he started with the basics: who is managing the money, what ETFs are on offer, and how Singapore investors actually use them. The session was also interactive, with short audience questions throughout. This is Part 1 of 4 from the seminar “Diversifying for Changing Markets: Financials, Bonds and Singapore’s Green Leaders”, held at the Tiger Brokers office on 27 October 2026.

[Who Is Lion Global Investors?]

  • Homegrown, 40 years in: established in 1986 and headquartered in Singapore, it specialises in managing Asian equities and fixed income.

  • Scale: group assets under management of S$78.8 billion (US$60.9 billion) as at 30 June 2026, making it one of the larger asset managers in Southeast Asia.

  • People: 194 employees, including 62 investment professionals; portfolio managers average 25 years of industry experience.

  • Group backing: it works with OCBC Group (the second-largest financial services group in Southeast Asia by assets) and Great Eastern (the oldest and most established life insurance group in Singapore and Malaysia).

[The ETF Lineup: One Provider, Many Asset Classes]

Lion Global Investors’ first ETF, the Lion-Phillip S-REIT ETF, listed in 2017. Since then the range has grown to ten ETFs, with ETF assets under management of S$2,256 million as at 30 September 2026. Xun Xiang’s point was breadth: the lineup spans Singapore, China, Japan, Asia Pacific and Emerging Asia, plus SGD fixed income and gold, so investors can pick exposure by asset class and region rather than by a single product.

  • Singapore: Lion-Phillip S-REIT ETF; Lion-OCBC Securities Singapore Low Carbon ETF

  • China: Lion-OCBC Securities Hang Seng TECH ETF; Lion-OCBC Securities China Leaders ETF; Lion-China Merchants CSI Dividend Index ETF

  • Japan / Asia Pacific / Emerging Asia: Lion-Nomura Japan Active ETF (Powered by AI); Lion-OCBC Securities APAC Financials Dividend Plus ETF; Lion-China Merchants Emerging Asia Select Index ETF

  • SGD fixed income and commodities: LionGlobal Short Duration Bond Fund (Active ETF SGD Class); LionGlobal Singapore Physical Gold ETF (USD class, tradable in SGD and USD on SGX)

One liquidity detail from the slides: each ETF is supported by at least two Designated Market Makers (DMMs), whose role is to help keep the ETF easy to buy and sell on the exchange.

[Three Ways SGX Ranks ETFs]

The seminar showed three different top-10 lists from SGX data. Each one measures something different, which is the real lesson for new investors.

  • By retail investors (as of 30 September 2026): SGX ranks ETFs by AUM attributable to its SGX listing. Three Lion Global Investors ETFs made the list: the Lion-Phillip S-REIT ETF (#3, ticker CLR), the Lion-OCBC Securities Hang Seng TECH ETF (#6, HST) and the LionGlobal Short Duration Bond Fund (Active ETF SGD Class) (#9, SBO).

  • By SRS and CPFIS investors (as of 30 September 2026): this list covers ETFs held through the Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) and the CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS). The same S-REIT and Hang Seng TECH ETFs appear (#6 and #7), along with the Lion-OCBC Securities China Leaders ETF (#10, YYY).

  • By trading volume, 2026 YTD (as of 31 July 2026): the Hang Seng TECH ETF ranked #1 with S$593 million traded, the S-REIT ETF #2 with S$439 million, and the Short Duration Bond ETF #8 with S$94 million.

Reading the lists: assets under management show how much money has been invested; trading volume shows how actively an ETF changes hands. An ETF can rank very differently on each list. The slides also carry a clear reminder: the securities shown are not recommendations, and rankings reflect what investors have done in the past, not what will happen next.

[Key Takeaways]

  • An ETF “family” can cover many asset classes. Equities, REITs, bonds and gold are all available as exchange-listed products.

  • Rankings measure different things. Size (AUM), retirement-account holdings (SRS/CPFIS) and trading volume answer different questions.

  • Liquidity has a structure behind it. Market makers support ETF trading on the exchange.

  • Rankings are not recommendations. Look at what an ETF holds and what it costs before looking at where it ranks.

[Call to Action 🎯]

  1. Open SGX’s ETF market highlights and find the top-10 lists by AUM and by trading volume. Note one ETF that ranks high on one list but not the other.

  2. Look up the ticker and the asset class of three ETFs you have heard of, and write down what each one actually holds.

  3. Drop a comment: which asset class (equities, REITs, bonds or gold) would you most like to understand better?

Markets are always moving - and sometimes, the best move is knowing what works for you.

With Treasury yields, oil prices and rate expectations keeping markets on edge this week, investors are once again thinking carefully about where to position next.

    STI ETF:

    S-REIT ETF:

    CPF/SRS

    REIT ETF:
