Hong Kong Has Not Bottomed Yet. But Smart Money Is Already Building a Barbell Trade.
The Hang Seng has spent two weeks getting punished.
HSI briefly fell below 23,000.
HSTECH has fallen toward 3,770-3,800, its weakest level since September 2024.
Then something interesting happened.
The market did not suddenly buy everything.
Money concentrated in two almost opposite trades:
Biopharma
and
Mainland dividend banks.
At first glance, that makes little sense.
One is a high-growth innovation trade.
The other is a defensive income trade.
But I think the combination tells us exactly what investors are doing.
They want upside, but they still do not trust the market.
That is why my Hong Kong strategy is not simply:
BUY THE DIP.
It is:
Build the barbell first. Buy the index later.
🔵 THE INDEX IS STABILISING. TECH IS NOT.
This distinction matters.
HSI has been trying to establish support around 23,000.
But HSTECH is still considerably weaker.
That tells me we have not yet reached the stage where investors are confidently buying broad Hong Kong beta.
If this were a genuine risk-on reversal, I would expect:
Tech leadership
stronger breadth
rising turnover
HSI reclaiming resistance
We do not have that combination yet.
Instead, investors appear to be asking:
“Where can I get paid while I wait?”
Banks answer that through dividends.
And:
“Where can earnings growth overwhelm weak sentiment?”
Biopharma answers that through fundamentals.
That is the barbell.
🧬 SIDE 1: BIOPHARMA IS THE OFFENSIVE TRADE
WuXi AppTec is the perfect example.
This is not merely a stock bouncing because Hong Kong sentiment improved.
The underlying numbers are exceptional.
For the first nine months of 2026:
Revenue: RMB45.54B, +38.6%
Continuing operations revenue: +46.3%
Adjusted net profit: RMB18.38B, +74.4%
Adjusted gross margin: 54.8%
And management raised full-year guidance again.
That is exactly what I want during a weak market.
Earnings revisions going UP while market sentiment goes DOWN.
Those situations can eventually produce powerful reratings.
Because when sentiment recovers, investors suddenly have to chase a company whose fundamentals never deteriorated.
BUT I WOULD NOT BUY “BIOPHARMA” BLINDLY
This is important.
WuXi AppTec is a CRDMO.
Its strength tells us that drug-development outsourcing demand and customer pipelines remain healthy.
That does not mean every loss-making biotech deserves to rally.
My preference would be:
🟢 Profitable CRDMO leaders
🟢 Companies with commercialised drugs
🟢 Late-stage pipelines with meaningful catalysts
🔴 Pure concept stocks dependent on one binary trial
A sentiment recovery can lift everything temporarily.
But earnings determine what keeps the gains.
🏦 SIDE 2: BANKS ARE THE DEFENSIVE TRADE
Why would mainland banks rally when everyone is talking about growth?
Because investors still want something extremely simple:
Cash.
Large mainland banks offer something speculative technology cannot:
Dividends
Cash generation
State backing
Lower valuation
They effectively become an equity version of “getting paid to wait”.
That makes them particularly useful while the market remains uncertain.
But there is another reason I like this side of the barbell.
If Hong Kong does not immediately recover, the dividend cushions me.
If sentiment improves gradually, bank valuations can rerate.
And if investors eventually rotate aggressively into technology?
I can move capital from the defensive side of the barbell into growth.
Banks therefore give me optionality.
🧠 THIS IS WHY I WOULD NOT CHASE HSTECH YET
This may be the most controversial part.
HSTECH around 3,770-3,800 looks cheap compared with where it traded previously.
But:
Cheap is not the same as bottomed.
I want evidence.
My HSTECH map:
🟡 3,750-3,800: WATCH
We are here.
Potential capitulation territory, but I would not assume the bottom.
🟢 3,900: FIRST RECLAIM
The first sign buyers are regaining control.
🟢 4,000-4,050: CONFIRMATION
This would make me much more interested in adding broad technology exposure.
🟢 Above 4,200
Now I would start believing a genuine trend reversal is developing.
🔴 Below 3,700
The market is telling us the washout is not finished.
That is why I would rather pay slightly more for confirmation than continuously average into a falling index.
📍 HSI HAS ITS OWN LINE IN THE SAND
For HSI, the number is:
23,000
The market has repeatedly tested this area.
My map:
🟡 22,800-23,100
Bottoming battlefield.
🟢 23,500
First meaningful reclaim.
🟢 24,000
My confirmation that sentiment is repairing.
🟢 24,500+
Then I would become substantially more constructive on Hong Kong beta.
🔴 Below 22,500
I would stop calling this consolidation.
That would reopen downside risk.
So I am watching two confirmation numbers:
HSI 24,000
and
HSTECH 4,000-4,050
I do not need to catch the exact bottom.
I need to catch the change in trend.
🔥 THE FED HELPS, BUT IT CANNOT FIX HONG KONG
The Fed pause matters.
Rates remaining at 3.75%-4.00% removes one source of uncertainty.
But I would not confuse that with a Hong Kong catalyst.
Hong Kong still needs its own evidence:
Mainland growth stabilisation
Better corporate earnings
Improving investor flows
Policy support
A sustained technology recovery
The Fed can remove a headwind.
It cannot manufacture Chinese earnings.
That is why WuXi's numbers matter more to me than yesterday's Fed headline.
🚦 MY HONG KONG BARBELL
If I were allocating fresh Hong Kong capital today, I would not put 100% into beaten-down technology.
Conceptually, I would think:
🧬 40% QUALITY BIOPHARMA / HEALTHCARE
Growth engine.
Focus on real earnings, commercialisation and strong pipelines.
🏦 30% HIGH-DIVIDEND BANKS
Defensive engine.
Income while waiting for broader sentiment to recover.
💵 20% CASH
My ammunition.
If HSTECH confirms a reversal, this moves into technology.
If another sell-off occurs, I can buy mispricing.
💻 10% SELECTIVE TECH
Enough exposure so I participate if the rebound begins earlier than expected.
But not enough that another technology flush damages the portfolio.
This is not a permanent portfolio.
It is a bridge from fear to recovery.
🔮 MY THREE SCENARIOS
🟢 30%: REAL BOTTOM FORMS
HSI holds 23,000.
HSTECH reclaims 3,900 and then 4,000.
Breadth improves.
Foreign flows return.
Then I rotate:
Banks → Tech
while retaining my strongest biopharma names.
Technology becomes the higher-beta recovery trade.
🟡 50%: SELECTIVE RECOVERY
This is my base case.
HSI stabilises but struggles to break materially higher.
Tech remains volatile.
Capital keeps rotating between sectors.
Then the barbell wins.
Growth from biopharma + yield from banks.
I do not need the entire Hong Kong market to rally.
I need my companies to deliver.
🔴 20%: ANOTHER LEG LOWER
HSTECH loses 3,700.
HSI loses 22,500.
China growth concerns worsen.
Then I want:
Banks + cash
and I become extremely selective with growth.
This is precisely why I would not deploy everything today.
THE SIGNAL MOST INVESTORS WILL MISS
Everyone will watch HSI.
I will watch market breadth.
A genuine Hong Kong bottom should eventually produce:
Tech rising
Biopharma rising
Financials participating
Consumer stocks stabilising
Turnover expanding
That is when the rally stops being a sector rotation and becomes a market recovery.
Until then:
Do not confuse two strong sectors with a strong market.
That distinction may save investors from chasing another false dawn.
MY CALL
I think Hong Kong is becoming interesting.
But I do not think the evidence is strong enough to declare the bottom.
Instead, I see something potentially more useful.
The market is showing us where capital feels safest before confidence returns.
On one side:
🧬 BIOPHARMA
Real earnings growth.
WuXi AppTec's numbers show why.
On the other:
🏦 DIVIDEND BANKS
Yield, cash flow and defensive characteristics.
And sitting between them:
💵 CASH
Waiting for technology to confirm the next phase.
My sequence is therefore:
NOW: Biopharma + dividend banks
NEXT: Add selective tech above HSTECH 3,900
CONFIRMATION: Become more aggressive above HSTECH 4,000-4,050 and HSI 24,000
That is how I would trade this recovery.
Not by guessing the exact bottom.
By making the market prove it.
Because the best signal that Hong Kong has finally bottomed will not be one green day.
It will be when investors stop hiding in the barbell.

Which side would you buy first: biopharma, dividend banks, or beaten-down Hong Kong tech?
