Forget the Fed Pause. Two Votes Just Told Me What I Want to Own Next.
The Federal Reserve paused.
Rates remain:
3.75%-4.00%
The obvious trade would be:
Fed stops hiking → yields fall → buy growth → everything rallies.
I think that is too simplistic.
Because buried inside the Fed decision was a much more important signal.
The vote was:
10-2.
And BOTH dissenters wanted:
A RATE HIKE.
Not a cut.
A hike.
That changes how I interpret this pause completely.
This is not:
🟢 “The Fed has defeated inflation.”
It is closer to:
🟡 “THE FED CAN AFFORD TO WAIT.”
And if that is correct, the next market rally could look VERY different from the easy-money rallies investors are used to.
🔥 THE FED JUST GAVE US A STRANGE COMBINATION
Look at what the Fed said about the economy.
Economic activity:
EXPANDING AT A STRONG PACE
Domestic spending:
RESILIENT
Productivity:
STRONG
Capital investment:
ROBUST
Labour market:
STABLE
Inflation:
STILL ELEVATED
Put those together.
This is not recessionary monetary policy.
And it is certainly not an emergency easing setup.
It looks much closer to:
STRONG ECONOMY + STICKY INFLATION + HIGH RATES
That creates an unusual investing environment.
Because if rates remain elevated, the market cannot rely on:
MULTIPLE EXPANSION
to do all the work.
Companies have to deliver:
ACTUAL EARNINGS.
And THAT changes what I want to own.
🧠 THERE ARE TWO WAYS A STOCK CAN GO UP
Very simplified:
STOCK PRICE = EARNINGS × VALUATION MULTIPLE
In an easing cycle, investors can make money even when earnings growth is mediocre.
Why?
Rates fall.
Discount rates fall.
Valuation multiples expand.
A stock trading at 20x earnings becomes 25x.
Price rises.
But what if the Fed does NOT cut?
Then the second engine becomes weaker.
So the market increasingly depends on:
EARNINGS GROWTH.
This is why I think the next rally may become far more selective.
🔥 THE NEW MARKET QUESTION
For the last several years, investors kept asking:
“When will the Fed cut?”
I think the better question now is:
“WHICH COMPANIES DON'T NEED THE FED TO CUT?”
That is the portfolio I want.
Businesses with:
strong earnings growth
pricing power
high margins
strong cash generation
secular demand
manageable debt
ability to self-fund growth
Notice something?
That description sounds very different from:
speculative small caps
heavily indebted companies
pre-profit technology
businesses dependent on cheap refinancing.
This Fed pause may therefore widen the gap between:
QUALITY
and
HOPE.
🥇 MY NUMBER ONE CATEGORY: COMPANIES THAT CAN SELF-FUND AI
After this week's earnings, this has become my highest-conviction theme.
AI spending is enormous.
But the market has stopped rewarding spending alone.
It now wants:
CAPEX
↓
REVENUE
↓
MARGINS
↓
CASH FLOW
Companies that can finance their own AI expansion have a huge advantage in a higher-rate environment.
Microsoft is the clearest example right now.
Azure grew:
48%
while Microsoft still generated enormous operating cash flow.
That matters more when money remains expensive.
Compare that with companies requiring external financing to keep growing.
If rates stay high:
refinancing stays expensive
debt costs remain elevated
weak balance sheets become liabilities.
Cash-rich companies do not have that problem.
So my first rule after this Fed meeting is:
OWN COMPANIES THAT DON'T NEED CHEAP MONEY.
🥈 SECOND: AI BOTTLENECK SUPPLIERS
This week's semiconductor selloff has made this category more interesting to me.
Nvidia.
Micron.
SanDisk.
Networking.
Optics.
Power infrastructure.
Why?
Because the hyperscalers are STILL spending.
The market may dislike that spending.
But suppliers are getting paid from it.
This creates the strange paradox I wrote about earlier:
AI buyers:
🔴 capex hurts FCF.
AI suppliers:
🟢 capex creates revenue.
For Micron specifically, I am watching:
HBM scarcity
DRAM pricing
customer commitments
hyperscaler capex.
As long as those remain intact, I distinguish:
STOCK PRICE COMPRESSION
from
EARNINGS POWER COMPRESSION.
The first can create opportunity.
The second destroys the thesis.
Right now I see much more evidence of the first.
🥉 THIRD: BITCOIN, BUT ONLY AFTER ONE CONFIRMATION
This is where I differ from people who automatically say:
“Fed pause = buy Bitcoin.”
Not necessarily.
Bitcoin likes:
easier liquidity
falling real yields
weaker dollar
expanding risk appetite.
A Fed that pauses because inflation remains elevated is not automatically bullish for BTC.
Especially if the next possible policy move is still a hike.
So BTC is not my first trade.
I want confirmation from:
TREASURY YIELDS.
If yields start falling despite the Fed staying on hold?
Very interesting.
That would tell me the market believes inflation is cooling enough that the Fed's next move eventually becomes easier.
Then BTC becomes much more attractive.
But if yields rise?
I remain patient.
🔵 THIS ALSO MAKES CRCL INTERESTING
Circle sits in a strange position.
Higher rates can support:
reserve income.
Lower rates can support:
crypto liquidity and valuation.
So CRCL does not simply need:
RATE CUTS.
It needs something more nuanced.
My ideal Circle environment is:
rates remain reasonably attractive
while
USDC circulation expands
and
crypto activity improves.
That allows Circle to benefit from both:
RESERVE ECONOMICS
and eventually:
TRANSACTION ECONOMICS.
This is why next week's CRCL earnings matter so much.
I want to see whether:
VOLUME CAN BEGIN REPLACING YIELD.
If Circle can prove that, the Fed becomes less important to the long-term thesis.
🟡 FOURTH: SMALL CAPS, BUT NOT YET
This is where I disagree with another obvious Fed-pause trade.
People hear:
“Hiking cycle paused.”
Then immediately:
“BUY SMALL CAPS.”
I would wait.
Small companies generally feel financing costs more acutely.
Many depend more heavily on refinancing.
Many have weaker margins.
Many have floating-rate debt.
A pause at 3.75%-4.00% does not make money cheap.
It merely means:
MONEY STOPPED GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE.
Those are not the same thing.
My signal for small caps would be:
inflation ↓
Treasury yields ↓
Fed hike risk ↓
earnings breadth ↑.
Then I become much more interested.
Until then:
QUALITY BEFORE BETA.
🟡 FIFTH: GOLD IS STILL USEFUL, BUT FOR A DIFFERENT REASON
Gold becomes interesting because this policy regime has two-sided risk.
Scenario one:
inflation stays sticky
and the Fed hikes again.
Gold can struggle initially if real yields rise.
But scenario two is more interesting.
The economy eventually slows while inflation remains uncomfortable.
Then policymakers face a difficult choice.
Cut and risk inflation.
Or stay restrictive and risk growth.
That policy uncertainty gives gold a role.
I don't view gold as my highest-return trade.
I view it as:
PORTFOLIO INSURANCE AGAINST POLICY ERROR.
That is different.
🚨 WHAT I WOULD AVOID
This Fed pause does NOT make me want to chase everything that fell.
I would be particularly careful with:
highly leveraged companies
speculative growth with no cash flow
weak small caps
companies dependent on constant refinancing
businesses whose entire valuation depends on rates falling quickly.
Because the Fed has given us no guarantee that cuts are coming.
In fact, two policymakers wanted the opposite.
That matters.
🔥 HERE IS MY NEW FRAMEWORK
Forget:
RATE CUT = BUY
RATE HIKE = SELL
That framework is too primitive.
I would use:
WHY IS THE FED DOING IT?
Imagine three scenarios.
🟢 SCENARIO 1: FED HOLDS + INFLATION FALLS + GROWTH HOLDS
This is the dream.
Real income improves.
Yields eventually decline.
Earnings remain strong.
Liquidity conditions gradually improve.
My winners:
AI infrastructure
quality technology
BTC
eventually small caps.
This is the strongest broad-market setup.
🟡 SCENARIO 2: FED HOLDS + INFLATION STAYS STICKY + GROWTH HOLDS
This looks closest to today's environment.
Rates stay elevated.
Valuation expansion is limited.
Stock selection matters.
My winners:
profitable AI
cash-rich mega-cap technology
infrastructure suppliers with pricing power
selective financials
gold as hedge.
My losers:
speculative long-duration assets
weak balance sheets
highly leveraged companies.
This is my base case.
🔴 SCENARIO 3: INFLATION REACCELERATES
Then the two dissenters suddenly become extremely important.
A hike comes back into play.
Treasury yields rise.
Dollar strengthens.
Valuations compress.
BTC and speculative growth struggle.
Then I want:
cash
pricing power
defensive earnings
selective commodities
and much smaller exposure to long-duration risk.
🧠 THE ONE CHART I WOULD WATCH NOW
Not the Fed funds rate.
That moves too slowly.
I would watch:
THE US 10-YEAR TREASURY YIELD.
Why?
Because it tells us how the bond market interprets the Fed.
FED HOLDS + 10Y FALLS
🟢 Financial conditions are easing anyway.
Growth assets become interesting.
FED HOLDS + 10Y SIDEWAYS
🟡 Earnings need to carry stocks.
Stock picking wins.
FED HOLDS + 10Y RISES
🔴 The market is pricing inflation/hike risk.
Long-duration assets become vulnerable.
This gives us a much faster signal than waiting for December.
🔥 AND THIS CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THIS WEEK'S SELLOFF
Look at what investors just punished.
Alphabet:
Massive AI capex.
Amazon:
Massive AI capex.
Micron:
AI supplier caught in capex fears.
Intel:
Cash-flow concerns.
What is the market suddenly obsessed with?
CASH.
That is not random.
When money remains expensive, future promises become less valuable.
Current cash becomes more valuable.
So I think we are entering a market where the hierarchy becomes:
1. CASH FLOW
2. EARNINGS GROWTH
3. BALANCE SHEET
4. AI EXPOSURE
5. STORY
Notice AI is only fourth.
That is a huge change from the previous phase.
MY RANKING AFTER THE FED PAUSE
If I were positioning fresh money today:
🥇 PROFITABLE AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Companies benefiting from enormous AI spending while producing real earnings.
🥈 CASH-RICH QUALITY GROWTH
Businesses that can finance expansion internally.
🥉 BTC, AFTER YIELDS CONFIRM
I want liquidity confirmation first.
4. GOLD
Policy-error hedge.
5. SMALL CAPS
Potentially powerful later, but I want falling yields first.
6. SPECULATIVE GROWTH
Still last.
A Fed pause alone does not rescue weak economics.
🔮 MY BASE CASE
I don't think this meeting gave us an “everything rally” signal.
I think it gave us something more useful:
A QUALITY FILTER.
The Fed is telling us:
growth is strong
investment is robust
inflation is still elevated
rates can stay restrictive.
That means the companies most likely to outperform are not necessarily those that benefit most from lower rates.
They may be the companies that:
DON'T NEED LOWER RATES AT ALL.
That is the insight I am positioning around.
So I am not asking:
“What should I buy because the Fed paused?”
I am asking:
“WHAT CAN COMPOUND IF THE FED DOES NOTHING?”
That produces a very different portfolio.
Profitable AI.
Cash-rich growth.
Scarce infrastructure.
Selective BTC when yields confirm.
Gold as insurance.
Small caps later.
And cash ready for volatility.
Because the strongest investment in this regime may not be the asset that benefits most when rates fall.
It may be the business that keeps compounding:
EVEN IF THEY DON'T.
I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!
