Corporate Profits No Longer Mean Employment: Welcome to the AI Economy
Everyone’s talking about AI taking jobs, but here is what’s actually happening right now behind the scenes. 👇
Look at the numbers from just October 2026:
• American Express: Cut ~3,500 jobs (despite beating earnings & raising full-year outlook)
• Barclays: Cut ~5,000 jobs (cited AI & efficiency)
• FICO: Slashed 15% of workforce (cited AI & efficiency)
• eBay: Cut ~1,100 jobs
• Netflix: Cut ~1,000 jobs
• Tech sector total in 2026 alone: Over 190,000 layoffs.
Notice the pattern? Companies are making record profits, yet they’re actively trimming headcount. They’re dumping billions into AI compute and data centers while cutting administrative and white-collar roles.
Moving forward, corporate profit growth will NO LONGER mean job growth.
This brings up a huge reality check for places like Singapore:
* The old economic playbook is broken.
We’ve always been told we need high birth rates and massive immigration to offset an aging population and drive GDP. But if AI drives GDP without needing more human labor, jamming more people into a tiny island just pushes up living costs, crowds our infrastructure, and benefits official metrics—not everyday citizens.
* The healthcare system is hitting a wall.
Rising premiums, longer hospital waits, continuous hiring of foreign staff, and handing out PR/citizenship to fill the gap is just band-aids on a bigger structural issue. It creates long-term side effects we can't afford to ignore.
* We need a modern policy reboot.
With population growth flattening globally, economic policy should pivot toward AI-driven productivity gains per citizen, rather than relies on sheer population density.
We can’t solve AI-era problems with a 20th-century playbook. Time to rethink how wealth and productivity actually serve the local population.
