INTC plunges -29% : Buy, Bail or Trap ?
On Thu, 29 Oct 2026, $Intel(INTC)$ reported its Q3 earnings after market closed for the day.
On Fri, 30 Oct 2026 morning, when trading resumed - INTC suffered a massive selloff, opening down roughly -25.8% at $68.36 per share. (see below)
Based on subsequent media coverage and corroborating earnings reports, market's reaction to INTC was driven primarily by a major guidance miss, rather than the quarterly results reported on Thursday evening.
What happened ?
On surface, INTC handed in a solid Q3 2026 earnings report card:
-
Adjusted EPS: $0.52 vs $0.40 expected
-
Revenue: $16.51 billion vs $16.5 billion expected
-
Revenue grew about +21% YoY.
On a normal day, those numbers would have been viewed positively. However, investors focused on INTC's Q4 forecast.
Unfortunately, they were considered weak by Wall Street expectations:
-
For current quarter (Q4), Wall Street expected revenue to be $17.1 billion vs INTC’s guidance of $15 - $16 billion.
-
Q4 2026 earnings per share (EPS) was estimated to be in the range of $0.43 - $0.44 vs INTC’s guidance of $0.25.
The guidance gap is enormous for a large-cap semiconductor company. This implies a sharp deterioration in near-term profitability.
INTC’s low guidance.
In essence, there were 3 key factors driving INTC lower.
(1) PC market - Weakening again
INTC, CFO David Zinsner, has explicitly warned that the company sees PC slowdown continuing into H1 2027.
INTC still relies heavily on PC sales for its revenue. Because of this, the company is facing financial pressure.
Looking at Q3 earnings, it is already evident:
-
Client Computing / PC-related revenue fell -5% YoY to approx. $8.1 billion.
-
This segment’s revenue missed expectations even while other segments performed well.
(2) Israeli fab accident - hurt production
INTC has disclosed that explosion at one of its Israel fabrication facilities has caused an extended shutdown. (see above)
Management said the incident is expected to reduce revenue by roughly $600 million over the next 2 quarters, minimally. This definitely left a ringing tone in Wall Street’s ears.
Further updates, according to INTC:
-
Production of certain 10nm chips was affected.
-
The disruption will impact shipments into upcoming quarters.
-
That means it is not purely a demand problem. It is partly a supply and manufacturing problem as well.
(3) Investors were positioned for perfection
One underappreciated factor:
-
Before earnings, INTC had already risen roughly 150% in 2026.
-
After a huge rally, expectations were running extremely high.
When a stock is priced for strong growth, investors tend to punish it, if there is any indication that growth is slowing.
INTC’s latest combination of (a) weaker PC demand, (b) lower revenue outlook, (c) lower EPS outlook and (d) factory disruption, created a "reset" in expectations.
My viewpoints: (mine only)
INTC’s drastic drop has been driven by 3 simultaneous issues:
-
PC demand is weakening more than expected.
-
INTC's Q4 guidance is materially below consensus.
-
INTC’s Israel fab shutdown adds a temporary but meaningful supply shock.
The most important number investors are reacting to is the Q4 revenue outlook of $15 -$16 billion versus expectations around $17.1 billion, because it signals that management believes the near-term environment is substantially worse than Wall Street assumed.
Investors are worried because the company expects to make $15 - $16 billion in the 4th quarter, that is much lower than the $17.1 billion experts predicted.
The 1.1 - 2.1 billion gap shows that the company's bosses believe business will be much tougher in the near future than Wall Street expected.
For an investor, the key question now is whether this is:
-
a temporary cyclical PC slowdown plus factory disruption OR
-
evidence that NTC's growth trajectory is stalling again after its big 2026 rebound.
INTC : still a Buy ?
Technical analysis.
To address the question, I defer to INTC’s technical indicators of (1) Simple Moving Averages of 20-day, 50-day & 200-day, (2) MACD and (3) RSI.
Simple Moving Average (SMA).
On Fri, 30 Oct 2026, INTC ended the month at $65.76 per share.
This is lower than all its SMA of (a) 20-day ($96.39), (b) 50-day ($101.11) and (c) 200-day ($86.86), clearly indicating a bearish momentum is in play.
Current ordering is:
-
Price (65.76) < 200-day SMA (86.86) < 20-day SMA (96.39) < 50-day SMA (101.11).
-
The 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA, and both appear to be turning downward at the right edge of the chart.
-
This is consistent with deteriorating short- & intermediate-term price trends.
-
However, the moving averages are not yet in a fully bearish alignment of 20-day below 50-day below 200-day: both shorter averages remain above the 200-day SMA.
-
The 200-day SMA is still rising, reflecting the earlier strong rally, even though the latest price has fallen sharply below it.
MACD.
Both MACD line (-6.43) and Signal line (-4.49) are sitting firmly below the Zero line, indicating a strong, long-term bearish momentum and a downward trajectory for the stock.
With the MACD line also below the Signal line further confirms a bearish relationship with continued downside pressure instead of a sustained recovery.
Looking at the MACD chart’s right edge, the MACD line also appears to turn lower again.
Lastly, INTC’s divergence of −1.94 and negative histogram indicate that its latest trajectory remains bearish.
The final histogram bar appears to deepen again, suggesting selling momentum is picking up after briefly easing, with no confirmed reversal yet.
RSI.
The 14-day RSI of 25.10 is sitting below the conventional oversold threshold of 30.
This indicates that recent downside momentum has been strong enough to place the stock in oversold territory.
More importantly, investors need to be acutely aware:
-
RSI signals substantial selling pressure, not proof that the shares are fundamentally cheap.
-
It creates the possibility of a short-term relief rally, but does not identify the timing of a bottom.
-
A rise above 30 would be an initial sign that oversold pressure is easing; it would be more persuasive alongside an improving MACD histogram and stabilizing price action.
Latest Market Trend.
In a recent poll by BofA Global Fund Manager survey, on what investors would most like to see companies do with cash flow: (see above)
-
39% said improve balance sheets.
-
35% said return cash to shareholders.
-
22% said improve capital spending.
Looks like investors have spoken and this survey will be put to test as the rest of S&P 500 companies continue to report their quarterly earnings.
With INTC facing a weaker outlook and bearish technical signals, what would convince you that the stock is worth buying rather than one to avoid ? I will hold back a wee longer, what about U ?.

Do you think INTC’s weaker outlook reflects temporary setbacks from slowing PC demand & factory disruption, or deeper problems with its growth ?
-
Do you think INTC’s sharp sell-off presents a buying opportunity, or do its bearish technical signals suggest it is too early to buy ? What else ?

This slide extended a historic sell-off from prior session and was triggered by a significantly weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue outlook.
Pessimistic guidance from an accelerating slowdown in personal computer market & rising memory component costs that are heavily compressing the company's near-term profit margins.
Have traders forgiven the ex-chip maker leader?
Or this is just relief trading?
