Powering Up My Portfolio: How a Decade with Sembcorp Turned Dividends into a Growth Engine

How Holding a Decade-Old SG Dividend Champion Like Sembcorp Shapes My Compounding Engine I’ve held $Sembcorp Ind(U96.SI)$ for ten years, and somewhere along the way, my steady dividend stock became a teenager who quietly excels at everything I didn’t expect. What began as a reliable dividend play in Singapore has evolved into a subtle yet powerful growth engine for my portfolio. Hi. I first bought OCBC in 2020. Have been holding on to it and adding progressively as well. OCBC is strong bank in SG and dividend is quite good in comparison to many other listed co. Will try to buy 100 shares per mth moving forward. Target to accumulate it further for the next 5 yrs. Hope that OCBC will continue to progress well with its strong leadership and direction. cheers. I hold a position in Yangzijiang Shipbuilding $YZJ Shipbldg SGD(BS6.SI)$ , so this week’s volatility definitely stood out. Despite the post-earnings drop, the rebound and solid YTD performance remind me why I’m comfortable holding it. The order book is strong, and even though the dividend yield isn’t high, I still see it as a steady long-term play. Singapore stocks give me a good mix of stability and tax-free dividends, which really help compounding. I hold a few SG names for both growth and income, and my longest-held one has been in my portfolio for several years.

I bought DBS during the COVID period around the $15-20+ range. Held it till now and the capital gains and dividend return (around 15+% yield on cost) is phenomenal. Will continue holding it for the long term as there is hardly much chance to get it at these prices. However, may sell some for rebalancing purpose in the future.

I do agree with the Buffett line for most parts. The longest-held Singapore stock one can have is $OCBC Bank(O39.SI)$. Is was incorporated during the Great Depression on 31 October 1932. It was a merger of 3 Hokkien banks dating back to 1912. During those years we held the share certificates of the bank to prove our ownership. OCBC has acquired more banks and grown steadily over the century, surviving the Second World War. This is a resilient and solid bank as good as gold. We keep it for the reliable twice-yearly dividend income. Even if one only started investing in OCBC 10 years ago, the total dividends collected and the growth in share price would amount to 119% gain over the initial cost. That translates into a compound annual growth rate of 8.2% over 10 years, well beating the long-term
