PPI Just Surged 1.3%. I Am Not Abandoning Tech, But My Traffic Light Has Changed π¦
After CPI came in hot, PPI has delivered another inflation warning.
September PPI rose 1.3% month over month, more than double expectations. Yet the market reaction is interesting: SPY gained while QQQ lagged.
Money is not simply leaving equities.
It is rotating.
That makes this less about "sell everything" and more about deciding what deserves fresh capital.
π΄ RED: WHAT WORRIES ME
The biggest problem is no longer one bad inflation print.
We now have CPI + PPI pointing in the same uncomfortable direction.
Persistent producer inflation can eventually mean:
Higher input costs β margin pressure β sticky consumer inflation β fewer rate cuts β higher yields β lower growth-stock valuations.
That is particularly uncomfortable for expensive AI and technology stocks.
My red-light signal would be:
Inflation stays hot + yields break higher + earnings estimates start falling.
If all three happen together, I reduce risk.
Until then, I am not treating every tech selloff as the beginning of a bear market.
π‘ AMBER: QQQ
QQQ is where I become selective rather than bearish.
AI earnings and capex remain strong, but valuation matters more when inflation is sticky.
My QQQ framework from the recent high:
0%-5% correction: WAIT
I would not chase.
5%-8% correction: FIRST PICK
Begin accumulating.
8%-12% correction: PREFERRED PICK
This is where risk/reward starts becoming attractive.
12%-15% correction: STRONG PICK
If earnings remain intact, I buy more aggressively.
Beyond 15%: THESIS CHECK
I want to know whether this is still valuation compression or whether earnings are weakening too.
For now, QQQ is π‘ AMBER, not red.
Hold the core. Keep cash. Wait for better entries.
π’ GREEN: SPY
SPY currently has one advantage QQQ does not:
Broader earnings exposure.
Financials, industrials, healthcare, consumer companies and energy can participate even while expensive technology valuations compress.
That is exactly what the latest price action is showing.
My SPY framework:
0%-4% correction: HOLD
4%-6% correction: FIRST PICK
6%-9% correction: PREFERRED PICK
9%-12% correction: STRONG PICK
Beyond 12%: THESIS CHECK
For investors who want equity exposure without betting everything on AI multiples, SPY is currently my π’ GREEN.
But I would not sell all my QQQ to buy SPY after the rotation has already started.
That is chasing yesterday's winner in a different form.
π’ GREEN: FINANCIALS
This is the sector I find increasingly interesting.
Higher-for-longer rates can support bank net interest income.
Capital markets activity has been improving.
And banks are far less sensitive to long-duration valuation compression than high-multiple technology.
But there is a catch.
If high rates eventually cause consumer or commercial credit stress, provisions rise.
So my bank dashboard is:
π’ Strong NII + controlled provisions = BUYABLE
π‘ Strong NII + rising provisions = SELECTIVE
π΄ Weak NII + rapidly rising credit losses = AVOID
JPM remains my preferred quality bank.
π‘ WHAT ABOUT MU AND THE SEMICONDUCTORS?
This is where I refuse to let macro headlines completely override company fundamentals.
MU has already experienced enormous valuation compression.
If PPI sends MU back toward my preferred zones while HBM demand remains strong, I am interested.
My MU map remains:
π’ $800-$840: Preferred Pick
π’ $740-$790: Strong Pick
π‘ $860-$890: Starter Zone
π‘ $930-$950: Recovery Test
π΄ Below $740: Thesis Check
I would rather buy MU because inflation temporarily compressed its multiple than because HBM demand collapsed.
Same lower price.
Completely different investment.
π¦ MY MARKET TRAFFIC LIGHT
My positioning now is simple:
π’ GREEN: SPY + quality financials
Best relative setup while rotation broadens.
π‘ AMBER: QQQ + MU + selected AI leaders
Hold what I like, but demand better entry prices before adding aggressively.
π΄ RED: Unprofitable high-beta growth
Higher yields are particularly unforgiving when earnings and free cash flow are years away.
MY 2-4 WEEK VIEW
π’ 25% Bull Case
Inflation fears fade, yields stabilise and QQQ catches up. Tech rebounds sharply.
π‘ 50% Base Case
Rotation continues. SPY outperforms QQQ, financials and value remain stronger, while technology becomes stock-specific.
π΄ 25% Bear Case
Another hot inflation print pushes yields higher. Both SPY and QQQ correct, with expensive technology taking the larger hit.
This is my highest-conviction conclusion:
I do not think the message from PPI is "sell stocks."
I think it is:
Stop paying any price for growth.
The market is finally forcing investors to distinguish between great companies, great earnings and great entry prices.
They are not always the same thing.
My traffic light today:
π’ SPY and quality financials
π‘ QQQ, MU and quality AI
π΄ Speculative growth without earnings
I am keeping my technology core, but fresh money has to earn the green light.
I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!
