Alphabet Is Down 7%. Microsoft Is Near Its Highs. Earnings Could Flip the AI Trade.

$Alphabet(GOOG)$

Alphabet and Microsoft report Wednesday after the bell.

On paper, investors will compare the usual numbers:

Google Cloud vs Azure.

AI growth.

Capex.

Margins.

Free cash flow.

But I think the more interesting trade is hiding in the charts.

Alphabet has fallen from roughly $338.50 to $314, about a 7% reset.

Microsoft is around $529-$533, close to the upper end of its recent range.

That means these two companies enter the same AI exam with very different expectations already embedded in their stocks.

And that matters.

🔵 MICROSOFT HAS TO PROVE THE PREMIUM

Microsoft's AI story is arguably cleaner.

Azure gives investors a relatively direct way to measure whether enormous AI infrastructure spending is becoming revenue.

The market wants:

AI capex → Azure growth → operating leverage → cash flow

The problem?

A lot of confidence is already reflected in the price.

At roughly $529, Microsoft does not merely need good earnings.

It needs numbers strong enough to justify remaining near record territory while capex stays enormous.

My key signal is simple:

Can Azure growth accelerate faster than the cost of building Azure?

If yes, Microsoft deserves its premium.

If capex surprises higher while cloud growth merely meets expectations, I think the stock becomes vulnerable even on an EPS beat.

MSFT levels

🟡 $520-$525: first support

🟢 $505-$515: preferred pick

🔴 Below $500: earnings disappointment zone

🟢 Above $535: first confirmation

🟢 $545-$550: breakout

Then $565-$580 becomes possible.

🟢 ALPHABET HAS THE OPPOSITE SETUP

Alphabet's chart is already bruised.

That changes the hurdle.

At around $314, investors have already spent several sessions reducing expectations before the report.

And GOOG has more than one way to surprise.

Search can remain resilient.

Google Cloud can accelerate.

Gemini can deepen engagement.

AI can improve advertising monetisation.

The most important question is whether AI is actually damaging Google's traditional economics.

If Search remains healthy while Cloud accelerates, the bear argument weakens considerably.

That creates what I think is the more interesting earnings asymmetry:

Microsoft needs to justify optimism.

Alphabet needs to disprove pessimism.

Those are very different setups.

🚦 GOOG LEVELS

Current: ~$314

🟡 $310-$315: HOLD / WATCH

We are effectively here.

🟢 $300-$305: FIRST PICK

🟢 $285-$295: PREFERRED PICK

🔴 Below $285: THESIS CHECK

On recovery:

🟡 $325-$330: FIRST RECLAIM

🟢 Above $338-$340: BULLISH CONFIRMATION

Then $350-$360 comes into play.

🧠 THE NUMBER I WOULD COMPARE AFTER BOTH REPORT

Not EPS.

Not even revenue.

I want to compare:

Incremental cloud growth versus incremental AI spending.

Think about it this way.

If Microsoft spends another $10 of AI capex and produces $5 of incremental cloud economics...

while Alphabet spends $7 and produces the same $5...

the market may eventually reward Alphabet's capital efficiency even if Microsoft's absolute AI business remains larger.

That is the next stage of the AI trade.

Not who spends most.

Who earns most from the next dollar spent.

🔮 MY EARNINGS REACTION MAP

🟢 30%: BOTH PASS

Azure and Google Cloud accelerate.

AI monetisation strengthens.

Capex remains manageable.

MSFT attacks $545-$550.

GOOG attempts $338-$350.

More importantly, the entire AI infrastructure complex gets validation.

That would be bullish downstream for NVDA, MU, SNDK and other AI suppliers.

🟡 45%: GOOD RESULTS, DIFFERENT STOCK REACTIONS

This is my base case.

Both businesses report respectable numbers.

But expectations decide the stocks.

Microsoft delivers good results and moves modestly because investors expected them.

Alphabet delivers similarly good results and rebounds harder because expectations had already reset.

In this scenario, I think GOOG has the better short-term asymmetry.

🔴 25%: CAPEX WINS THE ARGUMENT

Both companies announce another major increase in AI infrastructure spending without sufficient acceleration in cloud monetisation.

Then Meta's recent problem spreads.

The market stops rewarding:

“We are investing aggressively in AI.”

And starts punishing:

“We still cannot show you the return.”

That would hurt far more than GOOG and MSFT.

It would raise questions across the entire AI supply chain.

THE SECOND TRADE I WOULD WATCH

Big Tech earnings do not end with Big Tech.

Microsoft and Alphabet are among the companies ultimately funding the AI infrastructure boom.

If they confirm strong demand, their spending flows downstream:

Cloud demand

↓

AI data centres

↓

Nvidia accelerators

↓

HBM and DRAM

↓

Networking + storage

↓

Power

That means strong Azure and Google Cloud commentary could help validate the recent rebound in MU and the broader semiconductor trade.

Conversely, any hint of AI capex discipline because returns are disappointing could hit suppliers harder than the hyperscalers themselves.

That is why Wednesday matters far beyond two stocks.

MY CALL

If I had to choose the more interesting earnings setup, I would choose Alphabet.

Not because I suddenly think Google is a better company than Microsoft.

Because investing is about expectations versus reality.

Microsoft enters earnings with investors still willing to pay for excellence.

Alphabet enters after a roughly 7% reset with investors already questioning its AI economics.

That gives GOOG a lower hurdle.

So I see the setup as:

MSFT = higher-quality momentum, higher expectations

GOOG = damaged momentum, lower expectations, greater rebound asymmetry

If both deliver equally strong reports, I would not be surprised if Alphabet produces the larger percentage move.

But the number that matters most Wednesday night will not be either stock's EPS.

It will be whether cloud growth finally begins catching up with the billions being poured into AI.

Because that determines whether this AI cycle moves into its next phase:

Spend → Monetise → Generate Cash

The first company to prove that loop deserves the premium.

I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!

Wednesday earnings: GOOG for the rebound asymmetry, or MSFT for the cleaner AI execution?

Agree with your call. If the fundamental print satisfies Wall Street's focus on Google Cloud growth and CapEx monetization, the Three White Soldiers pattern will serve as the technical launching pad for a sustained bullish leg higher. If the print disappoints on margins or free cash flow, the event risk will overwrite the chart pattern. Let's see.

That 7% reset matters more than the EPS beat. If GOOG holds near 314 while Microsoft stays pinned by 529 to 533 expectations, the post-earnings swing can skew harder on repricing.
