Apple Earnings Tonight. I Think Everyone Is Watching the Wrong Quarter.
Apple reports tonight.
Wall Street expects roughly:
Revenue: $113.4B
EPS: $1.99
Apple is sitting around:
$344
near record territory.
So naturally everyone is asking:
CAN APPLE BEAT AND HIT ANOTHER ALL-TIME HIGH?
I think that is the wrong question.
Because Apple's most important new product:
THE IPHONE DUO
is barely relevant to the quarter Apple is reporting.
It launched AFTER the quarter ended.
So tonight's biggest number may not be Q4 revenue.
It may be:
THE Q1 FY2027 GUIDE.
That is where the real battle begins.
🔥 TONIGHT IS REALLY A PREVIEW OF APPLE'S NEXT CYCLE
The reported quarter gives us:
iPhone 18 launch-week demand
Services growth
gross margin
China
supply constraints.
Useful.
But the December quarter captures something much more interesting:
IPHONE DUO + HOLIDAY DEMAND.
Wall Street is already modelling approximately:
$153B revenue
and roughly:
$2.9 EPS
for the December quarter.
That is a huge expectation.
So Apple does not merely need to:
BEAT Q4.
It needs to convince investors that:
THE NEXT QUARTER CAN BE EVEN BIGGER.
That changes how I would trade the earnings.
🧠 THE DUO MAY MATTER MORE THAN ITS UNIT SALES
The iPhone Duo costs roughly:
$1,999.
Early demand appears strong.
Supply is tight.
Some estimates suggest demand is materially exceeding Apple's initial supply.
But I don't think the Duo's most important contribution is simply:
“Apple sells X million foldables.”
The bigger question is whether Apple has finally found a way to:
PUSH THE IPHONE ASP HIGHER AGAIN.
Think about it.
Apple does not need every iPhone buyer to purchase a Duo.
It needs enough premium customers to move the mix.
If Duo creates a new:
$2,000 ULTRA-PREMIUM TIER
above the traditional Pro lineup, Apple has created another rung in its pricing ladder.
That could matter enormously.
Because when smartphone unit growth becomes difficult:
PRICE + MIX BECOME THE GROWTH ENGINE.
🚨 BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM: MEMORY
This is where tonight gets particularly interesting for me.
The same memory supercycle I have been bullish on through:
MU
and
SNDK
is becoming:
APPLE'S COST PROBLEM.
Memory prices have surged.
And Apple needs enormous quantities of:
DRAM
NAND
storage
for hundreds of millions of devices.
That creates a fascinating transfer of economics.
For memory suppliers:
🟢 HIGHER MEMORY PRICES = BETTER MARGINS.
For Apple:
🔴 HIGHER MEMORY PRICES = INPUT-COST PRESSURE.
Same cycle.
Opposite side of the trade.
And this gives us one of the numbers I will watch most closely tonight:
GROSS MARGIN GUIDANCE.
If Apple can maintain strong margins despite rising component costs?
That tells me Apple still has extraordinary:
PRICING POWER.
If margins begin compressing materially?
Then the memory supercycle is starting to migrate from a supplier opportunity into a customer problem.
🔥 THIS IS WHY THE DUO COULD BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PEOPLE THINK
Suppose memory costs increase.
Apple has three choices.
1️⃣ Absorb the cost
Margins fall.
2️⃣ Raise prices
Demand could weaken.
3️⃣ Improve product mix
Customers voluntarily move toward higher-value devices.
Option 3 is obviously the most attractive.
And that is where Duo becomes strategically interesting.
A successful $1,999 product gives Apple another mechanism for:
MARGIN DEFENCE THROUGH MIX.
This is why I care about Duo demand beyond the headlines.
The question isn't merely:
“Are people buying the foldable?”
It is:
CAN DUO HELP APPLE OUTRUN COMPONENT INFLATION?
That is a much more important question.
🧠 AND THEN THERE IS SERVICES
Hardware gets the attention.
But Services may determine how much valuation Apple can defend.
Services carries substantially better economics than hardware.
So every additional dollar of Services revenue helps offset some of the margin pressure elsewhere.
This gives Apple two potential defences against rising hardware costs:
PREMIUM HARDWARE MIX
plus
HIGH-MARGIN SERVICES.
That combination matters.
If both accelerate simultaneously while iPhone demand remains healthy?
Then Apple can potentially absorb higher memory costs far better than most hardware manufacturers.
🚨 CHINA IS THE NUMBER I WOULD NOT IGNORE
There is one part of tonight's report where I would be much less forgiving.
GREATER CHINA.
Apple needs evidence that demand is stabilising.
Because the bull thesis cannot depend forever on:
US premiumisation
Services
Duo enthusiasm.
China remains one of Apple's most strategically important markets.
So I would separate:
temporary product-cycle weakness
from
structural share loss.
The second would worry me considerably more.
🔵 MY APPLE EARNINGS SCORECARD
Forget simply:
EPS beat = buy.
This is what I want.
🟢 IPHONE DEMAND
Strong.
Especially premium models.
🟢 DUO COMMENTARY
Demand exceeding supply is constructive.
But I want evidence supply can actually ramp.
🟢 SERVICES
Continued strong growth.
This protects the margin profile.
🟢 DECEMBER-QUARTER GUIDE
This is probably the most important signal.
I want confidence around the holiday cycle.
🟡 GROSS MARGIN
Watch how much component inflation is biting.
🟡 CHINA
Stabilisation would be enough.
🔴 MEMORY COSTS
If management starts talking about significant incremental pressure, pay attention.
🔥 THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE TONIGHT MAY NOT CONTAIN “AI”
That sounds strange for a mega-cap tech earnings report in 2026.
But Apple is different.
Microsoft and Google are spending tens of billions building AI infrastructure.
Apple's near-term earnings engine remains:
THE CONSUMER.
So while everyone searches the call for an AI announcement, I will be listening for something much simpler:
WHAT DOES APPLE EXPECT DECEMBER-QUARTER REVENUE TO BE?
Because that tells us whether:
iPhone 18 demand
Duo
Services
holiday spending
can overcome:
memory inflation
supply constraints
China uncertainty.
📍 HOW I WOULD TRADE AAPL AROUND $344
At this valuation and near record highs, I would NOT chase Apple before earnings.
The asymmetry isn't attractive enough for me.
Why?
Because expectations are already high.
A good quarter may already be priced.
So I want the market to give me one of two things:
CONFIRMATION
or
FEAR.
🟢 ABOVE $350-$355
BREAKOUT CONFIRMATION
If Apple beats, guides strongly and breaks through this area with volume, I would respect the momentum.
Then:
$365-$375
becomes my next zone.
And if earnings estimates rise meaningfully?
The market can begin discussing:
$390
without it being purely analyst fantasy.
🟡 $330-$340
HOLD / SMALL ADD
A modest post-earnings disappointment without thesis damage would interest me.
🟢 $315-$325
FIRST PICK
This is where I would become substantially more interested if:
demand remains strong
Services remains healthy
guidance remains intact.
🟢 $295-$310
PREFERRED PICK
This would require a significant sentiment reset.
If the operating thesis remains intact?
I would rather buy Apple here than chase it at record highs.
🔴 BELOW $295
THESIS CHECK
At that point I would investigate whether the problem is becoming structural:
China.
Margins.
iPhone demand.
Or something deeper.
🔮 MY THREE EARNINGS SCENARIOS
🟢 BULL CASE: 30%
Apple beats.
Holiday guidance exceeds expectations.
Duo demand is extremely strong.
Services remains robust.
Gross-margin guidance shows Apple can manage memory inflation.
Then:
$355-$375
becomes realistic.
And eventually:
$390
enters the conversation.
🟡 BASE CASE: 50%
Apple delivers a respectable beat.
Duo demand sounds strong.
But supply constraints and component costs limit upside to guidance.
Stock initially chops around:
$330-$355.
This would actually be my preferred outcome as someone looking for an entry.
🔴 BEAR CASE: 20%
Q4 is fine.
But holiday guidance disappoints.
Memory costs pressure margins.
China remains weak.
Or Duo production cannot ramp quickly enough.
Then:
$315-$325
could arrive surprisingly quickly.
🔥 AND HERE IS THE MU / SNDK READ-THROUGH
This may be the most interesting secondary trade from Apple's earnings.
If Apple explicitly highlights:
RISING MEMORY COSTS
as a margin headwind?
Apple investors may dislike it.
But MU and SNDK investors should listen carefully.
Because Apple is one of the world's most sophisticated buyers of components.
If even Apple cannot completely avoid memory inflation?
That tells us something about:
SUPPLIER PRICING POWER.
Remember the chain:
AI consumes enormous memory capacity
↓
suppliers prioritise higher-value products
↓
conventional DRAM/NAND supply tightens
↓
prices rise
↓
device manufacturers pay more
↓
MU / SNDK ECONOMICS STRENGTHEN.
So ironically?
One of the bearish details inside Apple's earnings could be:
BULLISH CONFIRMATION FOR MEMORY.
That is the cross-read I will be watching.
MY CALL
I don't think Apple needs a spectacular reported Q4 tonight.
It needs something more important:
A SPECTACULAR FORWARD STORY.
The stock is already around $344.
The market already knows Apple is extraordinary.
Another EPS beat alone doesn't justify a major re-rating.
What could?
DUO DEMAND
that proves Apple can create a new ultra-premium category.
STRONG HOLIDAY GUIDANCE
that shows the iPhone cycle is accelerating.
RESILIENT MARGINS
that prove Apple can absorb memory inflation.
And:
SERVICES GROWTH
that continues shifting Apple's economics toward recurring, higher-margin revenue.
Put those together?
Then Apple may not merely be having another good iPhone cycle.
It may be demonstrating something more powerful:
PRICING POWER IS BECOMING ITS ANSWER TO HARDWARE INFLATION.
That is why I am not chasing the stock before earnings.
At $344?
I WANT PROOF.
At $315-$325 after an emotional selloff but intact fundamentals?
I WANT SHARES.
And if Apple blows through $355 on a strong guide?
I would stop waiting for the perfect dip and respect the breakout.
Tonight, don't just ask:
“DID APPLE BEAT?”
Ask:
“CAN APPLE RAISE THE VALUE OF EACH IPHONE CUSTOMER FASTER THAN ITS COMPONENT COSTS ARE RISING?”
If the answer is yes?
Then the path to another all-time high becomes much more interesting.
I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!
Apple investors: would you rather buy a confirmed breakout above $355, or wait for a post-earnings reset toward $315-$325?
