Is "Buy the Rumor, Sell the News" A Good Trading Strategy?

"Buy the rumor, sell the news" refers to a trading strategy where a trader buys a security based on speculation about an upcoming news announcement or data, and then sells the security once the news is made public.

1. Why we don't buy the news?

When a good news event comes out, and the price rises, entering on that good news release can potentially be the worst time to enter the market.

That is when everyone else who bought the stock at the lower price may be getting out of the market in order to reap a profit.

2. How to“Buy the Rumor, Sell the News”?

A common example is trading based on the expectation on a company's quarterly earnings report.

Perhaps there's a rumor that a company is expected to provide more revenue to shareholders than previously thought. In that case, traders will buy the stock quickly to take advantage of increased dividends or stock prices.

Once the company release its results and the stock rises on strong revenue, the traders will sell their shares to turn a profit.

3. This strategy might sometimes be inaccurate

Disadvantages of the strategy include lack of accuracy and potential loss of opportunity on decisions not made quickly enough

No one can time the market with absolute certainty and buy the rumor, sell the news trading strategy is no different. There can be a number of reasons why this strategy could fail to yield a profit for traders.

For example,

in a bear market a company that beats expectations in its quarterly earnings may still see its stock price fall because the good news may not have lived up to the hype.

$Baidu(BIDU)$ released its latest earnings this week. Although it beated expectations, the share price dropped after the results.

Do you think "buy the rumor, sell the news" is a good trading strategy?

How do you find trading opportunities?

I think half of this saying “Buy the rumor, sell the news” is a 👍 trading strategy. I don’t usually buy on rumors but I buy and sell on 🗞🗞🗞 That’s how I get to pocket ”free 💵💵💵" by buying companies who’ve released 📰 about take-over/merger. I’ve done 5 so far-3 has closed and given profits. 2 are pending and I’ve shared the safer one with 🐯🐯🐯 in my posts $ORIGIN ENERGY LIMITED(ORG.AU)$ @Tiger_chat

    我以前也看到过这种新闻,但是反应太慢了。价格涨得太快,以更高的价格买入,人们开始套现,价格就会开始下跌。[得意地]

👍//@Shyon:I think buy the rumor, sell the news is a good trading strategy if you are experience on it and often monitor the speculation. I think in this century, those insiders start to trade on the rumor which make the stock price up or down by a significant %. Retailers are always the last one to enter because they only enter after the official news released and that's the moment when all the big investors or sharks start to harvest their profit. Therefore, we need to make the right choice especially on this strategy.

🌟🌟🌟In principle, Buy The Rumor Sell The News sounds like an excellent trading strategy but is it?  It is in anticipation of good news ahead for the stock but the reality is things can go awry.  Then the stock price plummets and the trader makes a loss.

To me, it is like timing the market but as we all know, it is time in the market that counts.  Investing is a marathon not a sprint.  So what's more important is to buy quality stocks with solid fundamentals and a wide moat that will be resilient and grow exponentially in the future.

That's my investing style and it forms my fundamental strategy in growing my wealth for the long haul.  It is definitely not Buy The Rumor Sell The News style!

Thanks for this event @Tiger_chat “Buy the Rumor, Sell the News” means if good news about a stock is expected sometime in the future, the stock price will go up in anticipation of that date, but not after. Market pricing moves in anticipation of something happening - the rumor. By the time the event happens, most people who want to own the stock already do. This neans that when thd event occurs, there is no one left to buy and akeep pushing the price up. This leads people to sell to cash in their profit. In the same way, if positive news comes out and a stock’s price drops on the news, traders will say, “The information was already baked in.” It neans the price rise happened before the news, so the price of the stock already reflect the impact of the good news. This is a good trading strategy. $Apple(AAPL)$ is a good example. Investors always buy in days and weeks leading up to its favorable earnings report, stock split, economic indicators & lower interest rates. DYODD.GoodLuck

I think this strategy is different according to the market. In Malaysia share market, definitely it works because the share has been pushed up by the insider before the announcement. so the price will drop because the big guy distribute their share to the pity retailer. but is us market, the regulation and enforcement is very tight, so most of the times we can ignore this strategy.

Buying on the rumour and sell on the news usually works for Singapore three local banks - DBS(D05), OCBC(O39) and UOB(U11). These 3 stocks were trading well above prices before their last earnings report. Seasoned investors picked up these stocks knowing that their reports on earnings day would be better than the last with growing interest rates. Then when they report much better earnings, these seasoned imvestors sell off their lots for huge profits. Take the case of UOB. Before earninhs report last Thursday, UOB shares kept rising and closed well above $30. After thr earnings report, the share dropped $1.90 at one stage when investors who had bought at lower prices earloer dumped yheir holdings and made a bundle. Yes, I did that for UOB [Happy]

One example of the "buy the rumor, sell the news" strategy in action is the stock of $Apple(AAPL)$ Apple Inc. (AAPL). In early 2020, rumors began circulating that Apple was planning to release a new line of 5G-enabled iPhones later that year. As anticipation grew, the stock price of AAPL began to rise. By September, the company officially announced the launch of its new iPhone lineup, which included 5G capabilities. However, instead of continuing to rise after the news was announced, the stock price of AAPL actually declined

@Tiger_chat

"Buy the rumor, sell the news is stock market folklore for a reason.
Stocks can potentially experience big price spikes based on speculation and rumors. Often, these hype-fueled spikes outweigh the reaction to actual news.
It doesn’t make sense at first. But a lot of things in the stock market don’t make sense until you study, learn, and start to understand how trading really works.
The stock market is forward-thinking. Most people are trying to anticipate what will happen in the future. I like to study the past and look for patterns. That helps me find ‘buy the rumor, sell the news’ plays that I can get in on and ride the wave of anticipation and hopefully generate profits. @Tiger_chat

There can be a number of reasons why this strategy could fail to yield a profit for traders. If there's a rumor among traders about an upcoming news event, chances are that the market has already moved in the direction of the new or the information is already "priced-in". If that's the case, the market may not move as much as expected when the news is finally made official and the trader employing the strategy may not make as much of a profit. Hence, do your own research, be very diligent and make the best decision for your particular situation taking in any rumors or news. @nickname168 @deal2deal @Tiger_chat

Provided the rumor is correct, that would be a good rule. The problem is if you buy on the rumor and the rumor is false. You are going to take a hit. A better way to invest is to find good companies and consistently invest in them. Don’t see the stock market like a lottery. If you play the stock market like the lottery you will have worse results than the average investor.

With the advent of social media and the hugely popular groups, the rumor is now often a rush to buy from big retail chatroom groups so this strategy fails. The fact is that the professional side is way ahead of the rumor and the retail gurus telling everyone to buy on the rumor. It is wise to buy based on clear investment fundamentals, or trade stocks based upon reliable technical analysis patterns.
I look for trading opportunities by analyze intra-day chart. It is very important for me to diligently monitor intra-day chart to get a cue of when to enter and when to exit. @nickname168 @luv2trade @Tiger_chat
