Going Small: Small-Cap Stocks Outperform as Major Indexes End the Week Lower
U.S. stock markets ended the week mostly in negative territory, as early fourth-quarter earnings failed to offset broader market caution. While large-cap indexes struggled, small-cap stocks stood out, extending a powerful rally that reflects growing confidence in the U.S. economic outlook. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 83 points on Friday and finished the week down 0.3%. The $S&P 500(.SPX)$ and Nasdaq Composite ended the week lower by 0.4% and 0.7%, respectively. In contrast, the Russell 2000 surged 2% for the week, closing at a record high. IWM Small Caps Take the Lead Small Caps The standout theme of the week was the continued rotation into small-cap stocks. Investors have increasingly moved away from expensive large-cap names, fa
$SMH Soars as AI Hype Builds, $SPX Sentiment Turns Crowded
1.Surging semiconductors $VanEck Semiconductor ETF(SMH)$ : the big beneficiary of the AI hype bubble has been semiconductor stocks – with that sector’s market cap weight far eclipsing levels seen during the dot com boom. Is it the new normal, or just another cycle of boom and b...? 2. $S&P 500(.SPX)$ Surveyed Sentiment: summing the various surveys, sentiment is getting fairly bullish. This is not necessarily an impending bearish signal as it reflects the bullish momentum underway, and I would highlight that sentiment generally works better at picking bottoms than tops. But it does got to show that most minds are made-up… and if the right(/wrong) thing came along, those minds could change pretty quickly
Bullish Consensus Builds as Cyclicals Break Out and Value Lags
Learnings and conclusions from this week’s charts:Sentiment is getting increasingly consensus bullish. $Cboe Volatility Index(VIX)$ & Credit Spreads are at complacent/confident levels.Transports, shipping stocks, EM, and metals are breaking out.Value is cheaper than usual vs history and vs growth stocks.Growth stocks are expensive vs history and vs value stocks.Overall, the mood remains distinctly bullish and increasingly so —and perhaps justifiably so as more evidence emerges in favor of a global growth reacceleration (and better performance from traditional cyclicals and risk-on assets). But with growth stocks already richly priced, and value still cheap, the next phase of the bull market might look a little unfamiliar to some…
$SPY Momentum Fades, Support Test Near $686 Likely
$SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ : The bullish momentum seen on Thursday and Friday mornings vanished by the close, printing a series of lower highs and a breach of the diagonal support. With the MACD curling downward, the structure suggests a test of $686.4 reinforced by the 20DMA next week. This seems to be exactly the opposite of the trend of $S&P 500(.SPX)$ :The hammer candle formed yesterday after bouncing from the 20DMA in confluence with $6,912 (one of the levels for this week) suggested a continuation for the bounce. The futures are suggesting the thesis is valid. Despite of the red day, breadth improved. For SG users only, Welcome to open a CBA today and enjoy access to a trading limit of up
The stock market concluded the week on a soft note, leaving major benchmarks lower as investors weighed solid economic data against renewed policy uncertainties. The S&P 500 $S&P 500(.SPX)$ dipped -0.4% and the Nasdaq 100 $NASDAQ 100(NDX)$ fell -0.9%, while Small-caps $iShares Russell 2000 ETF(IWM)$ rallied to secure a 2.2% advance. Overall volume remained subdued, reflecting a market in search of fresh catalysts. This price action mirrors what we saw in November and December 2025: indecisive days, dips that are quickly bought, and rallies that evaporate just as fast. Since then, I have emphasized the power of individual names during times of consolidation.

1. $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ Shooting stars at the upper Bollinger Band provide reversal signs.
