Memory Stocks Are Sending a Different Signal 🧠

While the S&P 500 keeps making records, parts of the memory and storage trade are suddenly telling a very different story. $Seagate and $Western Digital were hit particularly hard, while other semiconductor names held up better. The sell-off followed renewed concerns about future storage supply and Toshiba’s expansion plans. But I don’t think the market is simply saying “AI demand is over.” The more interesting debate is about pricing power. Memory has been one of the strongest parts of the AI infrastructure trade because supply has been tight and demand has been strong. That creates a powerful setup when supply is constrained. But it also creates a dangerous one when investors start believing new capacity could arrive faster than expected. Suddenly, the question changes from: “How m

Memory Isn’t Broken — Expectations Are Getting Tested 🧠

Semiconductors are rallying, but memory stocks are suddenly moving in the opposite direction. $SK Hynix fell 6.39%, while $Seagate dropped 9.18%, $Western Digital lost 6.93%, $SanDisk slipped 2.56% and $Micron fell 1.73%. So what changed? The biggest concern appears to be supply. Reports that Toshiba plans to significantly expand its storage capacity have investors questioning whether today’s tight market could eventually become oversupplied. That hit storage names particularly hard. There is also a second concern: power and execution. AI data centres need enormous amounts of electricity, and bottlenecks in power infrastructure could delay both data-centre deployments and the memory demand investors are counting on. But there is a bullish counterargument. AI demand hasn’t disappeared. Sa

Memory Is Lagging While Semis Rally: I Think the Market Is Testing the Supercycle, Not Ending It

Semiconductors rallied Tuesday, yet memory stocks went the other way. SK Hynix fell 6.39%, Seagate dropped 9.18%, Western Digital lost 6.93%, SanDisk declined 2.56% and Micron slipped 1.73%. At first glance, that looks worrying. If AI infrastructure demand remains strong, why are some of the biggest beneficiaries suddenly underperforming? I think the answer is that the memory trade has entered a more difficult phase. The market no longer needs proof that memory prices are strong. It needs proof that extraordinary memory economics can last.  The Supercycle Has Become a Victim of Its Own Success Memory has enjoyed an exceptional run. I think the market is worried about both sides of the equation at once: future supply rising while AI demand may arrive later than expected. Toshiba’s expansion raises the possibility that today’s HDD scarcity and pricing power eventually weaken. But analysts argue the reaction may be excessive. Morgan Stanley’s industry checks suggest Toshiba’s expansion is unlikely to eliminate the HDD shortage through 2028. The bigger risk may actually be demand timing. Morgan Stanley estimates a sizeable US data-centre power shortfall through 2028. If data centres cannot get powered on schedule, customers could delay equipment deliveries, hitting memory, storage and optical suppliers before Nvidia or Broadcom. That creates an awkward combination: more supply being planned for the future, but uncertaint

Friday, investors saw one headline and hit the sell button. Western Digital and Seagate both dropped more than 10% after reports that Toshiba plans to nearly double its HDD production capacity by fiscal 2027. The immediate market reaction was simple: More supply = more competition = lower pricing power. But just one trading day later, the story looked very different. Western Digital jumped around 6% and Seagate gained about 4–5% as analysts pushed back on the idea that Toshiba’s expansion will suddenly flood the market. That reversal is interesting because the underlying facts didn’t change overnight. Toshiba still plans to invest roughly $380 million to expand its Philippine facility, with the goal of significantly increasing HDD production. What changed was the interpretation. Analys

Friday looked ugly for the memory and HDD trade. The trigger? Investors appear to be reassessing fears around Toshiba’s planned capacity expansion. Bernstein called the panic a “storm in a teacup”, maintaining Outperform ratings on both WDC and STX. The argument is simple: even if Toshiba significantly expands capacity, execution takes time — and current supply still looks well short of demand. But there’s an important detail. Western Digital, Seagate Technology, and Sandisk continue to push into fresh all-time highs as momentum remains strong across the storage sector heading into Micron Technology's earnings next week. What's even more notable is that the strength hasn't faded yet. There's a case to be made that these names could have further upside if the trend continues. Targets I'm watching: * $Western Digital(WDC)$  → $850 * $Seagate Technology PLC(STX)$  → $1,250 * $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$  → $2,400 Storage remains one of the most powerful leadership themes in the current market cycle.
